3 Encouragements for Teens Setting Goals in the New Year


If you're setting goals for the new year, start here: your worth is not defined by performance, God has a meaningful path for your life, and His grace gives you room to grow when you fall short. You do not have to begin this year pressured or perfect. You can begin it grounded, hopeful, and walking with Jesus.

Encouragement #1: You Are Already Enough, Goals Don't Define Your Worth

Before we even talk about setting goals, let's get something straight: your value doesn't come from what you achieve. It comes from who you are, and who you are is a beloved child of God.

It's so easy to fall into the trap of thinking, "If I just get better grades… if I make the team… if I get more followers… THEN I'll be enough." But that's not how God sees you. Not even close.

Take a moment to really let that sink in. God didn't accidentally make you. He crafted you with intention, creativity, and so much love. Every quirk, every talent, every dream inside your heart, He placed it there on purpose.

What does this mean for goal-setting?

When you set goals from a place of already being loved and accepted, you're not chasing worth, you're building on it. Your goals become about growth, not proving yourself. That's freedom, friend.

  1. Start your morning with truth. Before you check your phone, read one verse that reminds you who you are in God's eyes. (Psalm 139 is a great place to start!)

  2. Create a "God Says" list. Write down 5 things God says about you (loved, chosen, enough, forgiven, never alone) and keep it somewhere you'll see it daily.

  3. Talk to yourself like you'd talk to your best friend. Would you tell your friend they're worthless if they failed a test? Of course not. Extend that same grace to yourself.

Encouragement #2: Set Goals That Excite YOUR Heart

Here's a secret that will change the way you approach this year: the best goals are the ones that make YOU come alive, not the ones you think you "should" have.

Maybe everyone around you is focused on getting into a certain college or making a certain team. That's great for them! But what lights YOU up? What makes your heart beat a little faster? What would you try if you knew you couldn't fail?

God gave you unique passions, interests, and gifts for a reason. When you set goals that align with who He made you to be, you'll find more motivation, more joy, and more staying power than if you're just checking boxes someone else handed you.

This verse isn't just a nice quote for your wall, it's a promise. God has good plans for your life. Not generic, cookie-cutter plans, but plans designed specifically for YOU. When you seek Him and ask for guidance, He'll help you discover goals that fit the unique path He's laid out.

  1. What do I love doing so much that I lose track of time?

  2. What problem in the world do I wish I could help solve?

  3. What's something I've always wanted to try but have been too scared to start?

  4. What would I do this year if I knew God was cheering me on every step of the way? (Spoiler: He is!)

  5. What's one area of my life where I want to grow closer to God?

Write down your answers. Pray over them. And then pick one or two goals that genuinely make you excited to get started.

Encouragement #3: Grace for the Journey, Fresh Starts Are Always Available

Okay, real talk: you're going to mess up. You'll have days where you don't feel motivated. You might set a goal and then completely forget about it by February. And guess what? That's okay.

One of the most beautiful things about walking with God is that fresh starts aren't a once-a-year thing. Every morning: actually, every moment: is a chance to begin again. You don't have to wait until next January to reset. You can start over today, tomorrow, or next Tuesday at 2:47 PM if that's when you need it.

What you're going through… it gets better.

Did you catch that? New every morning. God's mercies don't run out. His grace doesn't have a limit. If you stumble, you're not disqualified: you're invited to get back up and keep going, held by a God who never gives up on you.

  1. Ditch the all-or-nothing mindset. Missing one day doesn't erase all your progress. Just start again.

  2. Talk to God about it. He's not disappointed in you. Tell Him how you're feeling and ask for help.

  3. Celebrate small wins. Did you read your Bible once this week? That counts! Did you choose kindness when it was hard? Victory!

  4. Surround yourself with encouragement. Find friends, mentors, or an online community (like Boundless!) who will cheer you on.

  5. Remember: setbacks are part of growth. Every person you admire has failed more times than you know. Keep going.
