7 Mistakes You’re Making with Digital Faith (and How to Fix Your Feed)

Digital Faith : 7 Mistakes You’re Making with Digital Faith (and How to Fix Your Feed)

A Message from FA Memphis

We’ve all been there. You pick up your phone for "just a second" to check a notification, and forty-five minutes later, you’re spiraling through a rabbit hole of news, memes, and arguments. For many of us, our digital lives and our spiritual lives are constantly bumping into each other. We want to use our screens to grow in our walk with God, but somehow, the scroll often leaves us feeling more empty than encouraged.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that technology isn't the enemy: it’s a tool. But like any tool, if you don't know how to use it, you might end up hurting yourself more than helping. We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online, and part of that mission is making sure your digital environment is actually healthy for your soul.

If you’ve been feeling a bit "digitally drained," you might be making one of these common mistakes. Here is how to spot them and, more importantly, how to fix your feed.

1. Letting the Algorithm Lead Your Spirit

The biggest mistake we make is being passive consumers. Most social media platforms are designed to keep you watching by feeding you what is "engaging," which often means what is controversial, loud, or emotionally charged. If you let the algorithm choose your spiritual diet, you might end up with a very lopsided view of God.

The Bible tells us in Romans 12:2 not to be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewal of our minds. This applies to our "For You" pages, too. When we let an AI script dictate what we think about, we’re handing over the keys to our spiritual growth.

The Fix: Take back the wheel. Intentionally search for and follow accounts that align with sound doctrine and the 16 Fundamental Truths. Don't just wait for good content to find you; go find it.

2. The "Post and Ghost" Mentality

Digital faith isn't just about broadcasting your favorite Bible verses or posting a picture of your coffee and your journal. One of the greatest mistakes is treating social media like a billboard rather than a community. If you’re only "broadcasting" without ever engaging, you’re missing the "Church" part of "Online Church."

We are called to carry one another's burdens (Galatians 6:2). In a digital space, that means stopping to reply to a prayer request, sending an encouraging DM, or participating in a meaningful discussion in a group.

The Fix: For every post you share, try to leave three encouraging comments on someone else’s post. Turn your digital presence from a monologue into a conversation.

3. Relying Solely on Social Media for Your Spiritual Home

Social media platforms are like rented land. They can change the rules, hide your favorite creators, or even disappear overnight. If your entire spiritual life is built on a specific app, your foundation is on shifting sand.

Relying only on social media often leads to "snackable" theology: short quotes that sound good but lack the depth needed for true spiritual maturity. You need a permanent place to ground your faith that isn't subject to an app's updates.

The Fix: Establish a "Home Base." Bookmark our blog or visit our main site regularly. Having a dedicated space to read long-form teaching and study the Word ensures that your faith has deep roots that social media algorithms can’t touch.

4. Comparing Your Behind-the-Scenes to Everyone’s Highlight Reel

This is the classic digital trap. You see a "faith influencer" with the perfect aesthetic, the perfect family, and the perfect prayer room, and suddenly your own quiet time feels inadequate. This mistake leads to spiritual discouragement and a sense that you aren't "Christian enough" because your life doesn't look like a curated grid.

The Holy Spirit works in the messy, unedited parts of our lives. God doesn't need a filter to move in your heart.

The Fix: Practice a "Comparison Fast." If an account consistently makes you feel "less than" rather than "called up," unfollow or mute it for a month. Focus on your personal connection with Jesus, not the performance of it.

5. Sharing Unverified or Divisive Content

In the rush to be "bold" for our faith, it’s easy to hit "share" on a sensational headline or a quote that sounds spiritual but might not actually be biblical. Sharing misinformation or overly aggressive content can damage your witness and spread confusion within the body of Christ.

As believers, we are called to be people of the Truth. Before you share something, ask yourself: Is this verified? Is it kind? Does it reflect the character of Christ?

The Fix: The 24-Hour Rule. If you see something that makes you feel angry or urgent to share, save it and wait 24 hours. Often, with a little time and prayer, you’ll realize it’s better left unposted.

6. Ignoring Your Spiritual Maturity Stage

Not every piece of content is meant for everyone at the same time. A mistake many make is consuming deep, complex theological debates when they are still "babes in Christ" needing the milk of the Word, or conversely, staying stuck on basic motivational quotes when they should be moving toward "solid food."

If you are a new seeker, jumping into heavy digital arguments can be overwhelming and confusing. If you are a long-time believer, only consuming 15-second "God loves you" clips might leave you spiritually malnourished.

The Fix: Audit your content level. If you feel confused, look for foundational teaching. If you feel bored or stagnant, look for deeper Bible studies and challenges that push you to grow.

7. Losing the "Human" in the Digital

It is so easy to forget that there is a real person behind the screen. When we see a profile picture instead of a face, our empathy can drop. We might say things in a comment section that we would never say to someone’s face in a church lobby.

The mistake here is thinking that "digital space" is a "grace-free zone." But our call to love our neighbors doesn't have a digital exception clause.

The Fix: Before you type, imagine the person is sitting across from you. If your words wouldn't be seasoned with grace in person, don't hit "send."

How to Audit Your Feed Today

Fixing your feed doesn't happen by accident; it happens by intention. Here is a quick 5-minute exercise to reset your digital faith:

  1. The Unfollow Refresh: Scroll through your "Following" list. If an account consistently brings you anxiety, comparison, or anger, hit unfollow.

  2. The Priority Bookmark: Save the Boundless Online Church Blog to your phone’s home screen so you have a direct path to grounded, biblical content.

  3. The Engagement Goal: Find one person today who posted something vulnerable or a prayer request and send them a thoughtful, private message of support.

Your phone can be a prayer closet or a distraction trap. The difference is in how you curate it. Let’s decide today to build a digital environment that helps us meet Jesus and grow in faith every time we unlock our screens.

If you’ve been struggling with your digital habits or just need someone to talk to about where you are in your journey, we are here. We believe in the power of prayer and the strength of a connected community, no matter the distance.
