AG 101: How to Overcome Addiction and Anxiety Using the Power of the Holy Spirit?

To overcome addiction and anxiety using the power of the Holy Spirit, you must surrender your struggle to God, seek the "baptism in the Holy Spirit" for supernatural strength, and walk in daily "sanctification." Through the Spirit's power, the "chains of addiction" are broken, and "anxiety" is replaced by a "peace that surpasses all understanding."

If you’ve ever felt like you were running a race with weights tied to your ankles, you know what it’s like to live with addiction or chronic anxiety. You want to move forward, but the pull of the past or the "fear of the future" keeps you pinned to the ground. In the 901, from the heart of Memphis to the suburbs of Bartlett and Cordova, many of our neighbors are fighting these invisible battles every single day.

But here is the good news: You were never meant to fight this alone. In the Assemblies of God (AG), we believe that the same Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead is available to empower you, heal you, and lead you into a life of total freedom.

The Root of the Struggle: Sin vs. Grace

Before we can talk about the solution, we have to be honest about the problem. In a world that often tries to "medicalize" every spiritual struggle, the Bible reminds us that at the heart of our brokenness is a need for God's grace.

Addiction often starts as a way to "self-medicate" a deeper wound, while anxiety is often the fruit of trying to control a world that feels out of control. In theological terms, these are manifestations of our fallen nature, our "sin nature." But "grace" is God’s unmerited favor and His "enabling power." Grace doesn't just forgive your past; it empowers your future.

"But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'" , 2 Corinthians 12:9

Term

Biblical Definition

Baptism in the Holy Spirit

An experience subsequent to salvation where the believer is "filled with power" for life and service (Acts 1:8).

Sanctification

The lifelong process of being "set apart" for God and becoming more like Jesus through the Spirit's help.

Repentance

A "change of mind" and direction, turning away from sin and toward God.

Divine Healing

God’s intervention to restore health to the body, mind, and spirit through the work of Christ.

Step 1: Surrender the "Altar of the Heart"

In many Memphis church traditions, the "altar call" is a sacred moment. It’s where people lay down their burdens. But surrender isn't just something you do at the front of a sanctuary on Sunday morning; it’s something you do in your living room, your car, or your office.

To overcome addiction, you must first admit that your own "willpower" has reached its limit. The Holy Spirit begins His greatest work when we finally say, "I can’t do this, but You can." This is the first step of "repentance", turning your face away from the substance or the fear and toward the Father.

Step 2: Seek the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

In the Assemblies of God, we emphasize the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. While the Holy Spirit lives in every believer at the moment of salvation, the "baptism" is an overflowing fullness that provides "extraordinary power."

Think of it this way: If salvation is like having a glass of water, being filled with the Spirit is like being placed under a rushing waterfall. When you are fighting a physical addiction or a paralyzing spirit of anxiety, you need that "waterfall" of power. The Spirit provides "self-control" (a fruit of the Spirit) that overrides the cravings of the flesh.

Step 3: Use the Word as a Weapon

The Bible calls the Word of God the "Sword of the Spirit." When anxiety attacks your mind, you don't fight it with "positive thinking", you fight it with "God’s Truth."

The Lie

The Truth (Scripture)

"I will never be free from this addiction."

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:36)

"Something terrible is about to happen."

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7)

"I am all alone in this fight."

"I will never leave you nor forsake you." (Hebrews 13:5)

Miracle Stories from the 901

We have seen it happen right here in Memphis. We know a man, let's call him "James", who spent fifteen years bound by a heavy addiction. He had tried rehab, he had tried "white-knuckling" it, and he had tried moving to different parts of the city to escape his past. Nothing worked until he walked into a Spirit-filled service and felt the "convicting power" of the Holy Spirit.

He didn't just find a program; he found a Person. As he prayed at the altar, he described a feeling of "chains falling off." The cravings didn't just lessen; for the first time in a decade, they disappeared. That is the power of "divine healing." Today, James is active in our Life Groups, helping others find the same freedom he found.

The Power of Community (Don't Walk Alone)

Isolation is the "fuel" for both addiction and anxiety. This is why being part of a local church family in Memphis is so vital. Whether you join us for Recreational Sports or a mid-week Ladies' Bible Study, the goal is the same: connection.

The Holy Spirit often works through other people. When you are anxious, a brother or sister in Christ can pray the "prayer of faith" over you. When you are tempted, a mentor can remind you of your "identity in Christ."

5 Practical Steps to Start Your Freedom Journey Today

  1. Acknowledge the Need: Be honest with God. Tell Him exactly where you are struggling.

  2. Ask for the Filling: Daily ask, "Holy Spirit, fill me today. Give me the power I don't have on my own."

  3. Audit Your Environment: Remove the things (and sometimes the people) that trigger your addiction or anxiety.

  4. Anchor in Scripture: Choose one verse from the table above and memorize it. Say it out loud when the "pressure" rises.

  5. Access Community: Visit a local church or join our online community. You were never meant to be a "solitary Christian."

Life Takeaway

Your addiction or your anxiety may be part of your story, but because of the Holy Spirit, it does not have to be your end. There is a power available to you right now that is greater than any chemical or any "fearful thought."
