So, you’ve decided to follow Jesus.
That is the biggest decision you will ever make. It’s personal. It’s deep. It happens in the quiet corners of your heart.
But there comes a moment when that private faith needs to go public.
In the Christian walk, we call this baptism.
You might have seen it happen at a church or in a video. You might have questions about what it really means.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe baptism is a vital step for every new believer. It is a beautiful, powerful way to tell the world who you belong to.
We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online. Understanding baptism is a big part of that growth.
What is Baptism?
To put it simply, baptism is an outward sign of an inward change.
Think of it like a wedding ring. The ring doesn't make you married. The commitment and the legal vows do that.
But the ring tells everyone who sees it that you are committed to someone else. It’s a visible symbol of a heart-level promise.
Baptism is the "wedding ring" of the Christian faith.
It doesn't "save" you. Jesus saves you through your faith in Him.
But baptism is how you show the world that you have chosen to follow Him.

Following the Command
We practice baptism because Jesus told us to.
In the Bible, specifically in Matthew 28:19, Jesus gave His followers a clear instruction. He told them to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
This is what we call an "ordinance."
An ordinance is a fancy way of saying it’s a sacred practice established by Jesus Himself.
In the Assemblies of God tradition, which Boundless Online Church follows, this is our 6th Fundamental Truth. We believe that baptism by immersion is commanded in the Scriptures for everyone who has repented and believed in Christ.
If Jesus is our Leader, we follow His lead.
He was baptized to set an example for us. When we step into the water, we are walking in His footsteps.
The Symbol of the Water
The way we baptize matters because of what it represents.
We practice immersion. This means going all the way under the water and coming back up.
This isn't just about getting wet. It’s a physical re-enactment of what Jesus did for us.
When you stand in the water, you represent your life as it is now.
When you are lowered under the water, it symbolizes burial. It represents your "old self": the person you were before you knew Jesus: dying and being buried.
When you are brought back up out of the water, it symbolizes resurrection.
Just as Jesus rose from the grave to a new, eternal life, you are rising to a new life in Him.
It’s a fresh start. A clean slate. A public way of saying, "The old me is gone. The new me is here, and I am living for God."

Why Does It Have to Be Public?
Some people wonder why faith can’t just stay private.
"God knows my heart," they say. And that is true. God does know your heart.
But Jesus also spoke about the importance of acknowledging Him before others.
There is something transformative about standing up and saying, "This is what I believe."
When you are baptized, you aren't just doing it for yourself. You are doing it as a testimony to your family, your friends, and your church community.
Your public declaration can encourage someone else who is struggling with their own faith.
It lets your community know that you are part of the family of God. It gives them the opportunity to celebrate with you, support you, and hold you accountable as you grow.
Who Should Be Baptized?
The Bible gives a very clear sequence for baptism.
First, a person hears the Good News of Jesus. Second, they believe and repent of their sins. Third, they are baptized.
Baptism is for believers.
It is for people who have made a conscious, personal decision to trust Jesus as their Savior and Lord.
If you have realized that you can't do life on your own, and you've asked Jesus to forgive you and lead you, then you are ready.
There is no "perfect" level of spiritual maturity you have to reach first. You don't need to have the whole Bible memorized. You don't need to have all your struggles figured out.
You just need to belong to Jesus.

Common Questions and Hesitations
It’s normal to feel a bit nervous about baptism.
Maybe you’re shy. Maybe you’re worried about what people will think. Or maybe you feel like you aren't "good enough" yet.
Let’s clear some of that up.
"I was baptized as a baby. Do I need to do it again?" Many people were sprinkled or baptized as infants. While that was a beautiful gesture by your parents to honor God, biblical baptism is a personal choice made by a believer. If you have recently come to a personal faith in Jesus, being baptized as an adult is a way to "own" your faith for yourself.
"What if I mess up after I'm baptized?" You will. We all do. Baptism isn't a claim that you are now perfect. It’s a claim that you are now forgiven. It’s a commitment to a new direction, not an arrival at a destination.
"Is it okay to do this online or in a non-traditional way?" At Boundless Online Church, we understand that the world is changing. Whether you are baptized in a church tank, a swimming pool, or a lake, the heart behind the act is what matters.
The water doesn't have special powers. The power is in the obedience and the faith behind the act.
Living the Baptized Life
Baptism is a milestone, but it isn't the finish line.
It’s actually the starting line.
After you go public with your faith, the journey of "walking in newness of life" begins.
This means learning how to listen to the Holy Spirit. It means joining a community where you can grow.
If you are looking for a place to start that journey, we invite you to check out our Bible Study Club or join the conversation in our I'm New Q&A Welcome Center.
You don't have to walk this path alone.

Your Next Step
Are you ready to go public?
If you have been holding back, ask yourself why.
If you belong to Jesus, baptism is the natural next step. It is an act of worship. It is a moment of joy.
It is you telling the world, "I am not ashamed of the Gospel."
Take some time to pray about it. Talk to a spiritual mentor or a friend.
If you have questions about how to get baptized or what it means for your specific situation, reach out. We are here to help you navigate these steps.
God has a purpose for your life. That purpose starts with a relationship with Him, and it grows through your obedience.
Don't let fear or "not being ready" stop you from experiencing the blessing of this public declaration.
The water is ready. The family of God is waiting to celebrate with you.
Your private faith is a treasure, but your public declaration is a light.
Let it shine.
