Baptism in the Holy Spirit: Empowered for Witness and Service

If you've been around Assemblies of God churches for any length of time, you've probably heard someone talk about being "baptized in the Holy Spirit."

Maybe you've wondered what that means.

Maybe you've felt curious: or cautious.

Maybe you've seen someone speak in tongues and thought, "Is that real? Is that for me?"

You're not alone.

This is one of the core beliefs of the Assemblies of God, and it's rooted in something Jesus promised His followers: power to be His witnesses. Not just to survive the Christian life, but to live it with boldness, clarity, and spiritual strength.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe this promise is still available today: for every believer who wants it.

Let's talk about what it is, why it matters, and how you can seek it without pressure or confusion.

What Is Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

The Assemblies of God teaches that Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience that happens after salvation. It's not about getting saved: that's already done through repentance and faith in Jesus. This is about being empowered for witness and service.

Here's how Jesus explained it:

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." : Acts 1:8

The disciples were already believers. But Jesus told them to wait in Jerusalem until they received this power. And when the Holy Spirit came on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2), everything changed. They spoke in other languages, boldly preached the Gospel, and saw thousands come to faith.

This wasn't a one-time event.

Throughout the book of Acts, we see believers receiving this same empowerment: sometimes right after salvation, sometimes later. The Assemblies of God believes this baptism is promised to all believers, in every generation.

At Boundless Online Church, we teach that the Holy Spirit empowers us to live holy lives that please God and equips the church to worship, strengthen one another, and share the Gospel locally and globally.

The Initial Evidence: Speaking in Tongues

Here's where things can feel confusing: or even intimidating.

The Assemblies of God holds to what's called Fundamental Truth #8: that the initial physical evidence of being baptized in the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues (languages you haven't learned).

This doesn't mean tongues are the only evidence of the Spirit's work in your life. The fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, etc.) should grow in every believer. But according to the pattern in Acts, when believers were baptized in the Spirit, they spoke in tongues.

Why tongues?

It's a supernatural sign: something you can't manufacture or fake. It shows that God is doing something beyond human ability. Paul called it a gift that edifies the believer and, when interpreted, can build up the church (1 Corinthians 14).

Does this mean I have to speak in tongues to be saved?

No.

Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone. You don't earn it, and you don't prove it with tongues.

But if you want to experience the fullness of what God offers: the empowerment Jesus promised: the Assemblies of God teaches that this baptism, evidenced by tongues, is part of that promise.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe the gifts and fruits of the Spirit are available and should be desired by all believers today. We don't pressure anyone. We invite, teach, and pray with people who are hungry for more of God.

How Do I Seek This?

If you're curious or ready to seek the baptism in the Holy Spirit, here's what you need to know:

1. You Don't Earn It: You Receive It

This isn't about being good enough or spiritual enough. It's a gift. Jesus said, "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13).

2. Ask with Expectation

Come to God with a sincere, open heart. Tell Him you want everything He has for you. Pray something like:

"Lord, I want to be filled with Your Spirit. I want the power You promised. Baptize me in the Holy Spirit, just like You did for the disciples. I'm ready to receive."

3. Don't Try to Manufacture It

You can't force yourself to speak in tongues. It's a supernatural gift. Relax. Worship. Focus on Jesus. When the Spirit moves, you'll know: and you'll yield to it.

4. Seek in Community

At Boundless Online Church, we pray with people who are seeking this experience. You don't have to do it alone. If you'd like someone to pray with you, reach out to Dr. Layne McDonald, Online and Connection Pastor, or connect with our ministry team.

5. Some Receive Immediately; Others Continue Seeking

There's no formula. Some people are baptized in the Spirit the first time they ask. Others pray, seek, and wait. If it doesn't happen right away, don't get discouraged. Keep asking. Keep worshiping. God is faithful.

What Should I Expect?

When you're baptized in the Holy Spirit, here's what often happens:

  • You may speak in a language you don't understand. It might feel strange at first: but it's a gift. Don't analyze it. Just let it flow.

  • You may feel a deep sense of God's presence. Peace, joy, awe: these are common.

  • You may feel emboldened to share your faith. That's the whole point. This baptism is about empowerment for witness.

  • You may receive other spiritual gifts. Prophecy, healing, words of knowledge: these often follow.

But here's what's most important: this experience should draw you closer to Jesus and make you more effective in serving Him.

If it doesn't do that, something's off. The Holy Spirit always points to Jesus. Always.

Staying Grounded After You're Baptized in the Spirit

Once you've received this gift, here's how to steward it well:

1. Stay in the Word

The Spirit inspired the Bible. He'll never lead you away from Scripture. Read it daily. Let it anchor you.

2. Stay Connected to Your Church

At our church, we believe the gifts of the Spirit are meant to build up the body of Christ. Don't isolate. Stay connected. Serve. Worship. Grow with others.

3. Use Your Gift to Bless Others

If you speak in tongues privately, that's beautiful: it edifies you. But also ask God for gifts that build up the church: encouragement, wisdom, teaching, hospitality, service.

4. Stay Humble

This baptism doesn't make you "better" than other believers. It's a gift, not a trophy. Use it to serve, not to elevate yourself.

A Prayer for Those Seeking

If you're ready to ask God for this baptism, pray this with me:

Father, I come to You with an open heart. I believe in Jesus. I've been saved by grace. And now I'm asking for more: the power You promised through the Holy Spirit. Baptize me in Your Spirit. Fill me. Empower me. Give me boldness to share the Gospel and the gifts I need to serve Your Church. I trust You. I'm ready to receive. In Jesus' name, amen.
