Bible Club: Genesis 5 & 6 - Walking with God

Welcome back to Bible Club, Boundless family! Today we're diving into Genesis chapters 5 and 6, where we meet two extraordinary men who did something remarkable in the midst of chaos, corruption, and a world spiraling away from God. They walked with Him anyway.

If you've ever felt like you're the only one trying to live right in a world that's gone sideways, this study is for you. If you've wondered whether your daily faithfulness even matters when everything around you seems broken, lean in. Enoch and Noah have something powerful to teach us about what it really means to walk with God, one step at a time.

The Pattern of Death... And the One Who Broke It

Genesis 5 reads like a family record, names, ages, children born, and then the repeated phrase: "and he died." Over and over again. Adam lived, had sons and daughters, and he died. Seth lived, had sons and daughters, and he died. This pattern continues for generations, a sobering reminder that sin brought death into the human experience.

But then we get to verse 21, and something changes.

"Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away." , Genesis 5:24 (NIV)

Wait, what? No death? No "and he died"?

Enoch broke the pattern. While everyone else lived and died, Enoch lived and walked. His relationship with God was so close, so real, so consistent that God simply took him home without him ever experiencing death.

What Does It Mean to "Walk with God"?

Walking with God isn't about being perfect. It's about presence. It's about showing up daily, choosing to move through life with Him rather than running ahead or lagging behind.

Here's what walking with God looks like practically:

  • Conversation: Talking to God throughout your day, not just at meals or bedtime, but in the carpool lane, at your desk, in the quiet moments.

  • Listening: Taking time to be still and hear His voice through Scripture, prayer, and the Holy Spirit's gentle nudges.

  • Obedience: Saying "yes" to what He asks, even when it doesn't make sense to anyone else.

  • Trust: Believing He's with you even when you can't see the path ahead.

Enoch walked with God for 300 years. That's not a weekend retreat, that's a lifestyle. And it started with one step, one day, one choice to stay close.

Noah: Walking with God When the World Went Dark

Fast forward to Genesis 6, and the world has become a very dark place. Violence, corruption, and wickedness have spread everywhere. God looks at humanity and is grieved to His heart.

But then there's Noah.

"Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God." , Genesis 6:9 (NIV)

In a generation defined by rebellion, Noah stood out, not because he was loud or preachy, but because he walked with God. His life looked different. His choices reflected a heart that was aligned with his Creator.

And because of that walk, God chose Noah to preserve life through the flood. He gave him a wild assignment: build a massive boat in the middle of dry land for a storm no one had ever seen.

Noah said yes.

Saying "Yes" to God's Strange Requests

Let's be honest, sometimes what God asks us to do doesn't make sense. Build an ark? Forgive that person? Start that ministry? Move to that city? Share your story when you'd rather stay hidden?

Walking with God means trusting Him even when His instructions seem strange to everyone else.

🎬 Movie Review: Evan Almighty (2007)

If you want a fun, family-friendly take on what it might look like to say "yes" to God's big, unexpected asks, check out Evan Almighty. Steve Carell plays a newly elected congressman who gets a divine assignment to build an ark in modern-day Virginia.

It's lighthearted and funny, but underneath the comedy is a meaningful message: when God calls you to something, He equips you for it. The movie also highlights how obedience often looks foolish to the world but makes perfect sense in God's bigger plan.

It's a great one for family movie night: and a solid conversation starter about trusting God even when His requests seem ridiculous.

Life Hack: Take a Prayer Walk

Here's a simple but powerful way to bring "walking with God" into your everyday life: take a prayer walk.

You don't need a hiking trail or a gym membership. You can do this around your living room, down your hallway, or around the block. The idea is to physically move while you talk to God.

Why does this work?

  • Movement helps clear your mind and reduce anxiety.

  • It connects your body and spirit in worship.

  • It reminds you that faith is active: it's about moving with God, not just sitting still.

Try it this week. Put on your shoes (or don't: barefoot works too), and just start walking and talking to Him. Tell Him what's on your heart. Thank Him for what He's done. Ask for guidance. Listen for His voice.

You might be surprised how powerful a simple walk can be.

Two Paths: Which One Are You On?

Genesis 5 and 6 show us a clear contrast. Most of humanity was walking away from God: pursuing their own desires, living for themselves, and ultimately facing destruction. But Enoch and Noah chose a different path. They walked with God, and that made all the difference.

Here's the beautiful truth: you get to choose your path too.

No matter what the world around you is doing, no matter how chaotic or corrupt things seem, you can choose to walk with God. One step at a time. One day at a time. One "yes" at a time.

And when you do, you're never alone. He's right there with you.

Your Affirmation for This Week

Write this down. Say it out loud. Let it sink into your heart:

"I walk with God daily, and His presence guides every step I take, no matter the world around me."

This is your truth. You are not forgotten. You are not alone. You are deeply loved by a God who wants to walk through life with you: every single day.
