It happens to all of us. You wake up, and before your feet even hit the floor, you feel the weight of a heavy season. Maybe it’s a health struggle that hasn’t shifted, a relationship that feels like it’s drifting, or a career path that seems blocked at every turn. You’ve tried to stay positive. You’ve told yourself to "just keep swimming." But if we are being honest, sometimes your heart just feels exhausted.
You aren't running out of things to do; you are running out of hope.
At Boundless Online Church, we talk to people every day who are in this exact space. Whether you are joining us from Memphis, Tennessee, or tuning in from across the globe, the feeling of discouragement is a universal human experience. But here is the good news: the Bible doesn't just tell us to "feel better." It offers us something much more durable. It offers a kind of hope that doesn't depend on your circumstances changing by tomorrow morning.
The Real Definition of Hope
Before we dive into these verses, we have to clear up a common misunderstanding. In our modern world, we use the word "hope" like a wish. We say, "I hope it doesn't rain," or "I hope I get that promotion." In this context, hope is fragile. It’s a 50/50 shot. If things go well, you’re happy; if they don't, you’re crushed.
But biblical hope is entirely different. In the Greek and Hebrew scriptures, hope isn't a wish, it is confident expectation.
Hebrews 11:1 (NIV) says, "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."
Biblical hope is like standing on a solid rock while the waves crash around you. You aren't "wishing" the rock stays put; you are "confidently expecting" it to hold because it has held for thousands of years. This kind of hope is an anchor, not a balloon. It is grounded in the character of God and the finished work of Jesus Christ.
1. Hope for Your Future
When you are discouraged, the future looks like a dark room. You can’t see the furniture, so you’re afraid of tripping over everything. These verses are like a flashlight.
Jeremiah 29:11
"‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’"
This is one of the most famous verses in the Bible, but it’s often misunderstood. God spoke these words to people who were in exile. They were far from home, living in a difficult culture, and feeling like God had forgotten them. God didn't say, "I'll get you out of this in five minutes." He said, "I have a plan for you right here, and that plan ends in hope." Even if your current situation feels like "exile," God’s plan for your life is still active.
Romans 8:28
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
Hope isn't the belief that everything that happens is good. We know that life can be painful and unfair. Hope is the confident expectation that God is a master weaver. He can take the dark threads of your discouragement and the gold threads of His grace and turn them into something purposeful. Nothing in your life is wasted when it is placed in His hands.

2. Hope as Your Anchor
If your life feels like a storm-tossed sea, you don't need a map; you need an anchor. You need something that connects your soul to something deeper than the waves.
Hebrews 6:19
"We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure."
Think about what an anchor does. It doesn't stop the storm. The wind still blows, and the boat still rocks. But the anchor prevents the boat from drifting into the rocks. When you put your hope in Jesus, your soul is "anchored" behind the veil, in the very presence of God. You might feel shaky, but your position is secure.
Psalm 42:11
"Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I shall yet praise him, my Savior and my God."
This is one of the most "human" verses in the Bible. The writer is talking to himself! He acknowledges the pain, he says his soul is "downcast." He doesn't pretend to be okay. But then, he gives his soul a command: "Put your hope in God." Sometimes, finding hope means being honest about your discouragement and then reminding yourself of who God is.
3. Hope for Your Strength
Discouragement doesn't just hurt your heart; it drains your physical and mental energy. You feel tired in a way that sleep can’t fix.
Isaiah 40:31
"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
The word "hope" here can also be translated as "wait." To hope in the Lord is to wait on Him with expectation. When we stop trying to fix everything in our own strength and start leaning on His, something supernatural happens. He "renews" our strength. He gives us the endurance to keep walking when we feel like collapsing.
Psalm 31:24
"Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord."
Strength follows hope. You don't get strong first and then find hope. You find hope in God’s promises first, and that hope provides the courage you need to "take heart."

4. The Source of Your Hope
Where does this hope come from? Is it something you have to manufacture yourself? Do you just have to "try harder" to be positive?
Romans 15:13
"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."
Notice the source: the Holy Spirit. You don't have to dig deep within yourself to find hope. You just have to "trust in Him," and the Holy Spirit does the filling. God is called the "God of hope." It is His nature. If you feel empty today, you can ask the Source to refill you.
1 Peter 1:3
"In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead."
Our hope is "living" because Jesus is alive. This isn't a hope based on a philosophy or a set of rules. It is based on a historical event: the resurrection. If Jesus can conquer the grave, He can certainly walk with you through your current discouragement.
5. Hope That Does Not Disappoint
The world’s "wishful thinking" often leads to disappointment. But the Bible promises a different outcome for those who trust in God.
Romans 5:5
"And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us."
In the end, your hope in God will not leave you embarrassed. You won't reach the end of your life and realize you trusted in a myth. God’s love is the guarantee that His promises are true.
Lamentations 3:24
"I say to myself, 'The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.'"
Even in the middle of a book called "Lamentations" (which is all about grief and sadness), the writer finds a reason to hope. He decides that God Himself is enough. If he has God, he has everything he needs to survive the night.
Practical Steps to Reclaim Your Hope Today
Knowing these verses is the first step, but applying them is where the transformation happens. If you are feeling discouraged right now, try these three things:
Read the Word Out Loud: There is power in hearing the promises of God. Pick one of the verses above, perhaps Isaiah 40:31 or Psalm 42:11, and speak it out loud to your own soul.
Trade Your "Wishes" for "Expectations": Identify one area where you are "wishing" things would change. Now, find a promise of God (like Romans 8:28) and choose to "confidently expect" that He is working in that situation, regardless of what you see.
Connect with a Community: Discouragement thrives in isolation. When you are alone, your problems feel bigger than they are. When you join a virtual Bible study or an online small group, you realize you aren't alone. You can find that community today at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org.
A Prayer for the Discouraged Heart
Heavenly Father, I come to You today on behalf of the person reading this who feels like their hope is fading. You see their struggle, You know their pain, and You hear their silent prayers. Lord, I ask that You would be the "God of hope" for them right now. Fill them with peace that surpasses understanding. Remind them that they are seen, loved, and never forgotten. Be their anchor in this storm and renew their strength so they can soar again. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
If you are struggling to find your footing today, please know that you don't have to carry this weight by yourself. We have a team ready to pray with you and a community ready to welcome you. Whether you need a 24/7 prayer partner or just a place to watch a life-giving sermon, we are here for you.
