To hear God’s voice, you must cultivate a quiet heart, engage with the Bible, and listen for the Holy Spirit’s promptings. By creating space for stillness, starting with worship, reading Scripture as a living conversation, journaling your impressions, and testing everything against God's character in the Word, you can develop a clear and growing recognition of His voice in your daily life.
The Foundation of Hearing
One of the most common questions I get as a pastor is, "How do I know if it’s God speaking or just my own thoughts?"
It’s a great question.
If you’re a beginner, the idea of "hearing God" might feel a little intimidating. You might think it requires a booming voice from the clouds or a special degree in theology.
But Jesus said something very simple in John 10:27: "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me."
Hearing God isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about being His.
If you are a follower of Jesus, you already have the "equipment" to hear Him because the Holy Spirit lives within you. It’s a relationship, not a radio frequency you have to hack into.
Let’s look at five simple steps to help you tune in.
1. Create Silence and Stillness
Our world is loud.
Between notifications, work stress, and the constant hum of life, our minds are rarely quiet.
God often speaks in a "still, small voice." If you’re always moving and always listening to something else, you’ll miss the whisper.
Start by finding a physical place where you can be alone.
Even 10 minutes makes a difference.
Turn off your phone.
Close your laptop.
Just sit.
Psalm 37:7 tells us to "Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him."
This isn't about clearing your mind like meditation; it’s about opening your heart. When you sit in silence, you give God the "floor." You are signaling to Him that you are ready to receive.

2. Begin with Worship and Prayer
Before you jump in with a list of questions or requests, start by acknowledging who God is.
Worship shifts your perspective.
It takes your eyes off your problems and puts them on the Creator.
You don’t need a full band to worship.
You can simply state truths about God: "Lord, You are good. You are in control. You love me."
A great prayer for beginners comes from young Samuel in the Bible: "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening" (1 Samuel 3:10).
This simple shift, from "Listen, Lord, for your servant is speaking" to "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening", changes everything. It positions you as a learner rather than a director.
3. Immerse Yourself in Scripture
If you want to know what God’s voice sounds like, you have to read what He’s already said.
The Bible is God’s primary way of communicating with us.
It is "living and active" (Hebrews 4:12).
When you read the Bible, don’t just look for facts. Look for Him.
Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight a verse or a phrase.
Sometimes a sentence will "jump out" at you or feel particularly relevant to a situation you’re facing.
This is often the Holy Spirit speaking through the Word.

4. Journal What You Hear
When an impression, a verse, or a thought comes to mind during your quiet time, write it down.
Journaling is like "catching" the thoughts God gives you so they don’t drift away.
Don’t worry about being fancy. Just record what you feel God is saying.
Maybe it’s a sense of peace about a decision. Maybe it’s a reminder that He loves you. Maybe it’s a specific person you should reach out to.
Writing it down allows you to look back later
and see patterns. It helps you recognize how God uniquely communicates with you.

5. Verify Against God’s Character
This is the most important step for any beginner.
How do you know it was God?
God will never tell you to do something that contradicts His Word.
If you feel an "impression" to be mean to someone, that isn't God. If you feel an impression to do something dishonest, that isn't God.
God’s voice is consistent with His character. He is loving, holy, just, and kind.
The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, but He does not condemn us. His voice usually brings peace, even when He’s giving us a difficult instruction.

Practice Makes Progress
Hearing God is like learning a new language.
You won’t be fluent on day one.
You might get it "wrong" sometimes, and that’s okay.
God is a loving Father. He isn't trying to hide from you; He wants to be found.
Keep showing up. Keep opening the Word. Keep listening.
Over time, you’ll start to recognize that "still, small voice" in the middle of your busy day, and it will change the way you live.

A Simple Prayer
"Lord, thank You that You want to speak to me. Forgive me for the times I’ve been too busy to listen. Today, I am choosing to be still. Please open the ears of my heart. Help me to recognize Your voice in Your Word and in my spirit. Lead me in Your truth today. Amen."
