Do you really need to be a "Bible Scholar" to hear from God?
No. God speaks to every believer through His Word, the Holy Spirit, and community. Discipleship isn't about earning a degree; it’s about following Jesus one step at a time. If you can read a sentence and talk to a friend, you can hear from God.
The "Scholar" Myth: Why We Stay Silent
Have you ever opened the Bible, looked at a map of ancient Mesopotamia, read the word "propitiation," and thought, “Yeah, I think I’ll just wait for the Pastor to explain this on Sunday”?
Many of us feel like there is a massive "knowledge wall" between us and God. We assume that until we know the Greek roots of every verb or the exact year the walls of Jericho fell, we aren't "qualified" to hear God’s voice for ourselves.
But here is the beautiful truth: Jesus didn't call scholars first. He called fishermen, tax collectors, and everyday workers. He didn't say, "Go and get a Ph.D. and then follow me." He said, "Follow me."
What Does the Bible Say About Hearing God?
The Bible is not a textbook for experts; it is a letter from a Father to His children. If God wanted to hide His voice, He wouldn’t have sent Jesus to walk among us.
The Helper is in You: Jesus promised in John 14:26, "But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." You have a live-in Tutor!
Faith is for Everyone:Romans 10:17 tells us, "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." It doesn't say "faith comes from mastering theology." It comes from simply listening to the Word.
The Word is Practical:2 Timothy 3:16-17 reminds us that all Scripture is useful for teaching and training so that we are "thoroughly equipped for every good work." It’s meant to help you live your life tomorrow morning, not just pass a test.
Definition Block: Understanding the Basics
Term | Simple Definition |
Disciple | A follower and student of Jesus who learns to live like Him. |
Discipleship | The process of growing closer to Jesus through relationship, Scripture, and prayer. |
Holy Spirit | God’s presence living within every believer to guide, comfort, and teach truth. |

The Quick-Start Guide to Simple Discipleship
If you want to start hearing from God today, you don't need a library. You just need a "Bible 101" approach. Use this 15-Minute Listening Plan:
1. The 2-Minute Prayer
Start by asking for help. You don't need fancy words. Try this: "Lord, I’m here. Open my heart to what You want to say today. Help me understand."
2. The 5-Minute Read
Don't try to read three chapters. Read one paragraph. If you're new, start in the Gospel of Mark or the Gospel of John. These books tell the story of Jesus in a way that is easy to follow.
3. The 3-Question Filter
After you read that one paragraph, ask these three simple questions. Write the answers down in a notebook or on your phone:
What does this tell me about God/Jesus? (Is He kind? Is He powerful? Does He care about the hurting?)
What does this tell me about people? (Do they struggle with fear? Do they need forgiveness?)
What is one small thing I should do today because of this? (Forgive a co-worker? Pray for a friend? Be more patient?)
4. The 2-Minute Response
Turn your answer to Question #3 into a prayer. "Lord, help me to be patient with my kids today, just like You were patient with the disciples."
Common Misconceptions About Hearing God
"I have to be 'holy enough' first." You don't get clean to take a bath; you take a bath to get clean. You don't get "holy" to hear from God; you hear from God and follow Him, which leads to a holy life.
"God only speaks through 'audible voices' or signs." While God can do anything, He primarily speaks through the Bible. If you want to hear God speak, read the Bible out loud.
"If I don't understand it all, I'm failing." Think of the Bible like a vast ocean. A toddler can wade in the shallows and have a great time, while a diver can go deep. Both are in the same water. You don't have to be a diver to enjoy the ocean.

You Weren't Meant to Do This Alone
Discipleship is a "team sport." In the 901, we believe in the power of the local church. Whether you are in Memphis, Cordova, Bartlett, or Arlington, having a community of believers around you is how you "fact-check" what you think you’re hearing from God.
If you are joining us from across the globe through Boundless Online Church, you have a digital family ready to walk through these "Bible 101" steps with you. Hearing from God is easier when you have someone to say, "Hey, I read that too! Here is what I think it means."
Simple Discipleship Checklist
Step | Action |
Primary Way | Read the Bible (Start with the Gospels). |
Internal Way | Listen to the Holy Spirit's "nudge" or peace. |
Relational Way | Talk to a mentor or join a small group. |
Practical Way | Obey the last thing God told you to do. |
Taking the First Step
You don't need a degree. You don't need a title. You just need a heart that says, "I'm listening."
What is one thing you’ve felt God "nudging" you about lately? Maybe it's time to stop overcomplicating it and just start reading.
