While baptism in the Holy Spirit is not required for salvation or entering heaven, it is an essential biblical gift designed to empower every believer. It provides supernatural strength for witnessing, deeper intimacy with God, and a "power surge" for daily Christian living as seen in the book of Acts.
You’ve accepted Jesus. You’ve been baptized in water. You’re part of a local community here in Memphis or joining us through Boundless Online Church. So, when people start talking about "the Baptism in the Holy Spirit," you might wonder: Is this just for "super-Christians"? Do I really need it if I’m already saved?
The short answer is that God never gives a gift we don't need. If Jesus told His first followers, people who had already spent three years with Him, to wait for this "power from on high," then it’s something every one of us should lean into today.
Definition Block: Theological Terms
Term | Biblical Definition |
Salvation | The act of being saved from sin through faith in Jesus Christ; the "new birth." |
Baptism in the Holy Spirit | A separate experience where a believer is filled with the Spirit for empowerment and service. |
Sanctification | The lifelong process of being made holy and more like Jesus through the Spirit’s work. |
Initial Physical Evidence | The outward sign (speaking in tongues) that someone has received Spirit baptism. |
Why "More" is the Key Word
The Pastor for Boundless Online outreach, part of FA Memphis Church, often describes the Baptism in the Holy Spirit using the analogy of an 18-wheeler. Imagine you’re driving on a two-lane road in Shelby County, stuck behind a slow truck. You have a standard engine, and it gets you where you need to go. But when you need to pass that truck, you need a surge of power.
That "surge" is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
It isn't about being "more saved." You are 100% a child of God the moment you repent and trust in Christ. Instead, this experience is about empowerment.

3 Reasons Every Believer Needs This "More"
Power to Witness: In Acts 1:8, Jesus says, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses." It’s the difference between trying to talk about your faith and having a natural, bold overflow that reaches people in the 901 and beyond.
A Vibrant Prayer Life: Sometimes, our words run out. The Spirit helps us pray beyond our own understanding, deepening our connection to the Father (Romans 8:26).
Supernatural Boldness: Look at Peter. Before the Spirit fell in Acts 2, he was hiding in fear. Afterward, he stood before thousands in Jerusalem and spoke with a conviction that changed the world.
Is it Separate from Salvation?
In the Assemblies of God (AG) tradition, we believe this baptism is "distinct from and subsequent to" the experience of salvation. In simpler terms: it’s a second gift.
Think about the believers in Ephesus in Acts 19. Paul asked them a very specific question: "Did you receive the Holy Spirit since you believed?" They were already followers of Jesus, but they hadn't yet experienced this specific filling. Paul laid hands on them, and they received that surge of power.
This means you don't have to wait until you are "perfect" to ask for it. In fact, you need the Spirit’s power precisely because none of us are perfect!

What About Speaking in Tongues?
This is often the part that makes people nervous, but it shouldn't. In the book of Acts, when the Holy Spirit fell on believers (at Pentecost, at Cornelius's house, and in Ephesus), there was an outward sign: they spoke in "other tongues."
We call this the initial physical evidence. It isn't a badge of honor or a way to prove you’re "holier" than someone else. It is a gift, a heavenly language that allows your spirit to communicate directly with God. It’s like a release valve for a heart that is so full of God’s presence that human language isn't enough anymore.
How to Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit
If you’re sitting in Cordova, Bartlett, or anywhere in the world today and you want this "more," here is the good news: You don’t have to earn it. You just have to receive it.
Ask: Jesus said the Father loves to give the Holy Spirit to those who ask (Luke 11:13).
Surrender: Let go of the need to control the experience. Tell God, "I’m yours. Fill me."
Believe: Trust that God is faithful to His Word.
Step Out: As you pray, you may sense syllables or words forming that you don’t understand. In faith, speak them out. It’s a cooperation between you and the Spirit.

You Don't Have to Walk Alone
Whether you’ve been a Christian for twenty years or twenty minutes, God has a "power surge" waiting for you. This isn't about church tradition; it’s about a living, breathing relationship with a God who wants to equip you for everything life throws at you.
