Bible Study: Genesis 1 - Created in His Image

4 min read

If you have ever wondered whether your life has real value, Genesis 1 answers that question clearly: you were created in the image of God. Your worth is not borrowed from success, appearance, or applause. It begins with your Creator.

Today, we're diving into one of the most powerful and foundational truths in all of Scripture: you were created in the image of God. That's not a motivational poster quote. That's not something someone made up to make you feel better on a rough day. That's the very first thing God wants you to know about yourself when you open His Word.

So grab your coffee, settle in, and let's explore Genesis 1 together. Whether you're new to the Bible or you've read it a hundred times, there's always something fresh waiting for you in God's Word.

Bible Study: Created in His Image

Here at Boundless Online Church, Pastor Dr. Layne McDonald has a heart for helping every single person: no matter where they are in the world, no matter their background: discover their God-given identity and purpose. That's what Bible Study is all about.

You're never forgotten. You're never alone. And you are deeply, unconditionally loved by God.

So let's dig in.

Genesis 1:26-31: Made in His Image

Let's read the passage together:

"Then God said, 'Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.' So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it...' God saw all that he had made, and it was very good." (Genesis 1:26-28, 31 NIV)

What It Means to Be Made in God's Image

This is life-changing truth, friend. Out of all of creation, the stars, the mountains, the oceans, and the animals, only you were made in the image of God. That phrase, "image of God," reminds us that humanity is set apart with God-given dignity and purpose.

Here's what it means practically:

  • You reflect God's character. You have the capacity for love, creativity, wisdom, justice, and relationship: because He does.

  • You have inherent dignity. Your worth isn't based on your job, your appearance, your past mistakes, or what anyone else says about you. Your worth is based on who made you.

  • You have purpose. God didn't just create you and leave you to figure things out. He blessed you and gave you a mission: to steward, to multiply, to care for creation.

Think about this: after every day of creation, God said it was good. But after He made you? He said it was very good.

You are the crown of creation.

The Six Days of Creation

Genesis 1 shows us a God who is intentional, orderly, and deeply invested in His creation:

Day

What God Created

1

Light and darkness

2

Sky and atmosphere

3

Land and vegetation

4

Sun, moon, and stars

5

Sea creatures and birds

6

Land animals and humanity

Each day built on the one before it. God wasn't scrambling or improvising. He was preparing a beautiful home for His children. And on Day 7, He rested, modeling for us the rhythm of work and Sabbath rest.

Reflection and Response

Take a moment to journal or pray through these questions:

  1. Do I truly believe I am made in God's image? What lies have I believed about my worth?

  2. How can I reflect God's character today in my words, actions, and relationships?

  3. What does it mean for me to "steward" the world around me: my home, my community, my relationships?

A Simple Way to Live This Out

Here's a simple challenge for today: treat one person with the dignity that comes from being made in God's image.

That might look like slowing down and speaking kindly, refusing to join gossip, encouraging someone who feels invisible, or praying for a person who seems difficult to love.

We're all made in His image, every language, every nation, every background. When we remember that, we begin to live with deeper humility, compassion, and worship.

A Helpful Media Recommendation

If you haven't watched The Chosen yet, it can be a meaningful companion to your personal Bible reading.

Created by filmmaker Dallas Jenkins, The Chosen is a multi-season series that brings the life of Jesus and His disciples to life in a grounded, relatable, and moving way. While any dramatization should be measured against Scripture, many believers have found it helpful for reflection and conversation.

Why it can be helpful:

  • Character depth: You'll see the disciples as real humans with real struggles, doubts, and growth.

  • Conversation starter: It can open the door to deeper Bible discussions with friends or family.

  • Accessible: It's easy to watch and discuss together.

A simple idea: watch an episode, then open your Bible and talk about what Scripture says.

A Truth to Hold Onto

Here's something to speak over yourself today, and every day:

"I am made in the image of God, and my life has God-given worth."

Write it on a sticky note. Set it as your phone wallpaper. Say it out loud in the mirror. Let this truth sink deep into your heart, especially on the days when the enemy tries to convince you otherwise.

You are not an accident. You are not a mistake. You are a masterpiece, handcrafted by the God of the universe.

A Prayer for You

Lord, thank You for creating us with purpose, dignity, and love. When we forget who we are, remind us that our identity begins with You. Heal the lies we have believed about our worth, and help us reflect Your character with humility, courage, and grace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
