Bible Study: How Can I Read the Bible and Actually Hear God’s Voice?

Your Bible isn't just a book of ancient history; it's a living invitation to a conversation with the Creator of the Universe.
How do I move from just reading words on a page to actually hearing God speak to my heart today?
To hear God’s voice through the Bible, you must approach the text with a prayerful heart, use a structured method like SOAP (Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer), and rely on the Holy Spirit to illuminate the truth. It’s about shifting from information-gathering to a relationship-building dialogue where you expect the Word to be "living and active" in your specific life circumstances.
The Living Word: More Than Just Ink and Paper
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe the Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God. But there is a difference between knowing the Logos (the written Word) and receiving a Rhema (a specific, living word spoken by the Spirit to your situation). When you open your Bible, you aren't just doing homework; you are entering the throne room.
The Holy Spirit, who inspired the writers of the Bible thousands of years ago, is the same Spirit living inside you today. His job is Illumination.
Definition: Illumination Illumination is the work of the Holy Spirit helping a believer understand and apply the truths of the Bible to their life. While the Bible was written long ago, the Spirit "turns the light on" so we can see how it applies to us right now.
If you’ve ever felt like the Bible was "dry" or "boring," it might be because you were reading it like a textbook rather than a love letter. Hearing God’s voice requires a shift in posture. You are not just a reader; you are a listener.
Step 1: Prepare the Atmosphere (The Heart Posture)
Hearing God begins before you even open the cover. If your mind is racing with your to-do list or the noise of social media, it’s hard to catch the "still, small voice."
Find your "Secret Place." Whether it’s a quiet corner in your home in Cordova, a park bench in Bartlett, or a digital space via Boundless Online Church, you need a place where you can be honest.
Start with a "Wake Up" Prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes. A simple prayer like, "Holy Spirit, I am here. I am listening. Please speak to me today," changes the spiritual frequency of your study. You are "plugging in" to the Source.

Step 2: Use the SOAP Method (The Structure)
Without a plan, most people flip through the Bible randomly, hoping to land on a "lucky" verse. While God can work that way, He honors the discipline of study. The SOAP method is the gold standard for foundational Bible Study.
Step | Action | The Goal |
Scripture | Write out a verse that stands out. | Focusing your attention. |
Observation | What is happening in this text? | Understanding the context. |
Application | How does this change my Tuesday? | Personal transformation. |
Prayer | Pray the verse back to God. | Closing the conversation. |
Scripture: Don't try to read five chapters at once. Read a small section, maybe 10 verses, until one specific sentence "jumps" at you. That "jump" is often the Holy Spirit highlighting what you need for today. Write it down word-for-word.
Step 3: Observe with Holy Curiosity
Observation is where you stop being a passenger and start being a detective. Ask the "Big Five" questions:
Who is speaking?
Who are they talking to?
What is the main problem being solved?
What does this tell me about God’s character?
Is there a promise to claim or a command to follow?
When you observe, you are building the foundation. You cannot hear God’s voice accurately if you ignore what the Bible actually says. In Memphis, we value "keeping it real," and that applies to the Word. Don't try to make it say what you want it to say; listen to what it is saying.
Step 4: Move from Observation to Application
This is where the "hearing" happens. Application is the bridge between the Bible's world and the 901 (or wherever you are in the world).
Ask yourself: "If I actually believed this verse was 100% true, what would I do differently in the next hour?"
If the verse is about forgiveness, who do you need to text? If it’s about God’s provision, what worry do you need to drop? God’s voice is rarely just for your information; it’s almost always for your transformation.

Step 5: Listen for the "Spirit-Whisper"
After you’ve done the work of studying, sit in silence for two minutes. This is the part most people skip.
In the Assemblies of God, we believe in the active, ongoing work of the Holy Spirit. As you sit quietly, the Spirit may bring a person to mind, give you a sense of peace about a hard decision, or convict you of a hidden sin. This is the "internal witness" of the Spirit confirming the Word you just read.
Definition: Sanctification Sanctification is the process of being made holy. As we hear God’s voice and obey His Word, the Holy Spirit gradually changes our desires and behaviors to look more like Jesus. Bible study is the primary fuel for this process.
Practical Tips for Your First Week
Pick a Book: Don't start in Leviticus! Start with the Gospel of John or the Book of James.
Time it Right: Whether you’re a morning person or a night owl, give God your "prime time," not your "leftover time."
Journal Everything: A year from now, you’ll want to look back and see how God’s voice guided you through this season.

Life Takeaway: Hearing is Doing
The goal of Bible Study 101 isn't to become a scholar; it’s to become a disciple. Jesus said in Luke 11:28, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it." The more you obey the small things God whispers to you through His Word, the louder and clearer His voice will become in the big things.
