You can know if you have received a spiritual gift by observing three primary indicators: a deep, Holy Spirit-led desire to serve others, the visible effectiveness of your actions in building up the Church, and the consistent confirmation of other mature believers. True spiritual gifts always exalt Jesus as Lord and align perfectly with the truths of Scripture.
This article explores the biblical foundations of spiritual gifts found in 1 Corinthians 12, offering practical steps to discern your unique calling, distinguish between natural talents and spiritual empowerments, and ensure your gifts are anchored in the fruit of the Spirit.
Understanding the Source and Purpose of Spiritual Gifts
In a world obsessed with self-promotion and individual achievement, the concept of a "spiritual gift" can often be misunderstood. Many people mistakenly view these gifts as personal superpowers designed to make them stand out. However, the Bible paints a very different picture. According to 1 Corinthians 12, spiritual gifts are not earned, bought, or manufactured. They are manifestations of the Holy Spirit given to every believer for the benefit of the entire community.
The Apostle Paul writes, "Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all" (1 Corinthians 12:4-6). This tells us that while your gift may look different from someone else’s, the source remains the same. Whether you have a gift for teaching, encouragement, healing, or administration, it is God who is working through you to accomplish His purposes on earth.
At Boundless Online Church, we believe that you were created with a purpose. Whether you are connecting with us from a hospital bed, a busy office, or a quiet living room, the Holy Spirit has equipped you to play a vital role in the body of Christ. Recognizing your gift starts with shifting your perspective from "What can I do for myself?" to "How has God equipped me to serve others?"
The 1 Corinthians 12 Test: Discerning the Spirit’s Work
How do you know if a particular ability is actually a spiritual gift? Paul provides a fundamental test of discernment in the very first verses of 1 Corinthians 12. He reminds the church that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and "no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Spirit" (1 Corinthians 12:3).
The first and most important test of any spiritual gift is its center of gravity. Does the exercise of this gift point people toward Jesus Christ? Does it result in the confession that He is Lord? If a supposed gift draws more attention to the person than to the Savior, or if it contradicts the character of Christ, it is not functioning as a biblical spiritual gift. True gifts are "Christ-centric." They are tools used by the Spirit to shine a spotlight on the Gospel.
Furthermore, Paul emphasizes that "the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal" (1 Corinthians 12:7). The term "common good" is central here. If your "gift" creates division, fosters pride, or only serves your own interests, it is likely a natural talent being used for selfish gain rather than a spiritual gift being used for ministry. A genuine gift will always build up, encourage, and strengthen the faith of those around you.
Gifts vs. Natural Talents: What is the Difference?
It is common to confuse natural talents with spiritual gifts. You might be a gifted public speaker, a talented musician, or a highly organized manager in your professional life. While God certainly uses our natural abilities, spiritual gifts are distinct. A natural talent is something you are born with; a spiritual gift is something given to you by the Holy Spirit upon your spiritual rebirth in Christ.
The primary difference lies in the power and the result. A natural talent can entertain, inform, or organize, but it cannot bring about spiritual transformation on its own. A spiritual gift, however, carries a supernatural weight. When someone exercises a spiritual gift of teaching, people don’t just walk away with more information, they walk away with a conviction of heart and a deeper love for God. When someone uses the gift of encouragement, it doesn't just provide a temporary emotional boost; it provides a lasting spiritual fortitude that sustains a person through trial.
To discern the difference, ask yourself: "Does this ability produce spiritual fruit that I cannot explain by my own effort?" If you find that God is using you to reach hearts and change lives in ways that exceed your own skill level, you are likely operating in a spiritual gift. Practical Indicators You’ve Received a Gift
While the Holy Spirit distributes gifts as He wills (1 Corinthians 12:11), there are several practical markers that can help you identify your specific area of empowerment. These are not exhaustive, but they are consistent with the patterns we see in Scripture and church history.
1. An Internal Compulsion and Joy
Often, a spiritual gift is accompanied by a "holy discontent" or a burning desire to see a specific need met. Do you feel a heavy burden for the lonely? You may have a gift of mercy or hospitality. Do you feel a deep urge to explain the Bible clearly to others? You may have a gift of teaching. This internal compulsion is often paired with a sense of deep joy when you are actually engaged in that work. It doesn't mean the work isn't hard, but it means there is a spiritual "fit" that feels right.
2. External Effectiveness and Fruit
Look at the results of your service. When you pray for others, do they experience peace or healing? When you give advice, do people find biblical clarity? Spiritual gifts are functional. They are meant to do something. If you think you have a gift for leadership but no one is following you, it may be time to reassess. Effectiveness is a secondary confirmation that the Spirit is indeed working through you in a specific way.
3. Confirmation from the Community
You were not meant to discern your gifts in isolation. The body of Christ is designed to reflect your gifts back to you. Often, other people will see your gifts before you do. If multiple mature Christians have told you, "God really used you to help me understand that verse," or "You have a way of making people feel welcome that is truly special," pay attention. That communal confirmation is one of the most reliable ways to know your spiritual gift.
The Vital Link Between Gifts and Character
One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is the pursuit of gifts without the pursuit of character. This is why Paul placed the famous "Love Chapter" (1 Corinthians 13) immediately after his teaching on spiritual gifts in chapter 12. He makes it clear that even if you have the most spectacular gifts, speaking in tongues of angels, prophesying, or having faith to move mountains, if you do not have love, you are "nothing" (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).
Spiritual gifts are like the high-powered engine of a car, but the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, etc.) is the steering wheel and the brakes. Without character, gifts can become destructive. A person with a great gift of leadership but no humility becomes a tyrant. A person with a gift of knowledge but no love becomes arrogant. To truly operate in your gift, you must be a person who is being transformed by the Spirit from the inside out.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to "perform" with your gifts, take a moment to breathe. God is more interested in who you are becoming than what you are doing. How to Start Operating in Your Gift Today
You don't need a platform or a title to start using the gifts God has given you. In fact, most spiritual gifts are exercised in the quiet, unobserved moments of daily life. Here are three steps you can take today to begin operating in your spiritual calling:
Start Serving Locally and Digitally: Don't wait for a special "calling" to do good. Look for the needs around you. Is there someone in your neighborhood who is lonely? Is there someone in our online community who needs an encouraging word? As you serve, you will naturally begin to see which "tools" the Spirit puts in your hands. You can also explore our podcasts for more teaching on how to live out your faith in a digital world.
Ask for Wisdom: James 1:5 promises that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God, who gives generously. Pray specifically for the Holy Spirit to reveal how He wants to use you. Ask Him to open doors that no man can shut and to give you the courage to walk through them. If you want to dive deeper into these topics, check out the various resources in our book collection.
Stay Connected to the Body: Spiritual gifts lose their power when they are separated from the church. Whether you attend a local congregation or find your community here at Boundless, you need the accountability and support of other believers. We are many members, but we are "one body" (1 Corinthians 12:12). Your gift was designed to lock into the needs of someone else, and their gift was designed to support you.
A Pastoral Prayer for Your Discovery
Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You that You have not left us to navigate this life in our own strength. Thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit and for the unique empowerments You have placed within every believer reading this today. Lord, I pray for the person who feels "giftless" or unimportant. Remind them that they are a vital part of Your body, seen and loved by You. Grant them clarity and discernment to recognize the ways You are already working through them. May their gifts always point back to Jesus, bringing hope and healing to a world in need. Strengthen their character and fill them with Your love, so that their service is a sweet aroma to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Frequently Asked Questions About Spiritual Gifts
Can a spiritual gift be lost?
While Romans 11:29 says that the gifts and calling of God are "without repentance" (irrevocable), our ability to operate in them effectively can be hindered by unrepentant sin, spiritual apathy, or a lack of use. 2 Timothy 1:6 encourages us to "stir up the gift of God" that is within us. We must stay connected to the Source to keep the gifts vibrant.
Does every Christian have at least one spiritual gift?
Yes. 1 Corinthians 12:7 and 1 Peter 4:10 clearly state that "each one" has received a gift. There are no "bench-warmers" in the Kingdom of God. If you are a follower of Christ, the Holy Spirit has placed a manifestation of His grace within you to be shared with others.
Can I choose which spiritual gift I want?
1 Corinthians 12:11 says that the Spirit distributes gifts "to every man severally as he will." While we are encouraged to "covet earnestly the best gifts" (1 Corinthians 12:31), we must ultimately trust the sovereignty of God. He knows exactly which gift matches your personality, your circumstances, and the needs of the church.
Are spiritual gifts the same as the Fruit of the Spirit?
No. Spiritual gifts are *what you do* (abilities for service), while the Fruit of the Spirit is *who you are* (Christlike character). You can have great gifts but poor fruit, which leads to spiritual failure. The goal of the Christian life is to have both gifts and fruit working together in harmony.
