Bible Study: Is Grit Enough? Why You Need Resurrection Power Over Human Resilience

No, grit is not enough. Human resilience may help you endure hardship for a moment, but only the resurrection power of Jesus can change you from the inside out. Real hope is not found in trying harder or holding on tighter. It is found in surrendering to Christ and receiving His life, strength, and Spirit.
Let’s be honest: we live in a culture that worships "the grind." We’re told that if we just pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and have enough grit, we can get through anything. And hey, I love a good underdog story as much as the next guy. But there’s a massive problem with the "grit" gospel. It has a ceiling. Eventually, your bootstraps snap. Eventually, the pressure of life gets heavier than your ability to carry it.
I’ve seen it in my own life and in the lives of so many people I talk to through Boundless. We try to be "resilient." We try to "bounce back." But what if God doesn't want you to just bounce back? What if He wants you to move forward into a version of yourself that you could never create on your own? That is the difference between human grit and Resurrection Power.
The Resilience Trap
Resilience is a buzzword in psychology and self-help circles, and it’s not inherently bad. It’s the ability to recover quickly from difficulties. It’s like a rubber band, you stretch it, and it snaps back to its original shape.
But as Christians, our goal isn't just to be a rubber band. If I’m going through hell, I don’t want to snap back to the person I was before the trial. I want the trial to produce something in me that wasn't there before. I want to be more like Jesus.
Human grit says, "I can do this." Resurrection Power says, "I can’t, but He can." It’s the shift from self-reliance to God-reliance. And that shift is where the real miracles happen.

3 Radical Differences Between Grit and Resurrection Power
If you’re feeling exhausted from trying to hold it all together, this Bible study is for you. Here are three ways the power of the Holy Spirit (which we call Resurrection Power) outshines human resilience every single time.
1. The Source: Your Tank vs. God’s Ocean
Human grit is a battery. It has a limited charge. You might have a "long-lasting" battery, but eventually, it hits 1%. When you rely on resilience, you are the source. If you’re tired, your resilience is low. If you’re grieving, your grit is gone.
Resurrection Power, however, is fueled by the Holy Spirit. In the Assemblies of God, we believe that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is an endowment of power for life and service. This isn't just a theological idea; it’s a practical reality. When Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that God’s "power is made perfect in weakness," he wasn't being poetic. He was describing a spiritual law. When your tank is empty, God’s power doesn't just "help" you, it takes over.
2. The Process: Surviving vs. Transforming
Resilience is about survival. It’s about not breaking. It’s "hanging in there." But Resurrection Power is about transformation. Think about the caterpillar and the butterfly. The caterpillar doesn't just "survive" the cocoon; it dies to its old form to become something completely different.
When Jesus rose from the dead, He didn't just "recover" from the crucifixion. He came back with a glorified body. He came back with the keys to death and Hades. He transformed the ultimate defeat into the ultimate victory. When you walk in this power, your setbacks aren't just things you "get through", they are the very things God uses to make you look more like His Son.
3. The Outcome: Status Quo vs. Kingdom Impact
Grit makes you a stronger version of you. Resurrection Power makes you a vessel for God. When you rely on grit, the glory goes to you. People say, "Wow, you’re so strong." But when you rely on Resurrection Power, the glory goes to Jesus.
In 2 Corinthians 4:7, it says, "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us." We are just the clay pots, friends. Life can crack us. But it’s through those cracks that the light of Christ shines the brightest. Resurrection Power doesn't just benefit you; it flows through you to help others who are struggling.

Why This Matters Right Now
Maybe you’re reading this from a hospital waiting room, or maybe you’re scrolling on your break at a job that’s draining the life out of you. Maybe you’re the "strong one" in your family, and you’re secretly terrified that you’re about to crack.
I want to tell you: it’s okay to crack. In fact, it’s often necessary.
We see this throughout Scripture. Every great move of God started with someone coming to the end of their own grit. Moses at the Red Sea, David before Goliath, the disciples in the upper room, they weren't "resilient" heroes; they were desperate people who tapped into a power that wasn't their own.
The Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails for how we understand this. We don't believe in a "magic" power, but a relational one. It’s about being connected to the Vine (John 15). If you stay connected to Jesus, His life flows into you. You don't have to manufacture the fruit; you just have to stay attached.
How to Tap Into Resurrection Power
So, how do we stop "gritting" and start "resurrecting"? It starts with surrender.
Surrender is a dirty word in our culture. We think it means giving up. But in the Kingdom of God, surrender is the only way to win. You have to stop trying to "fix" your life with your own hands and put it into the hands of the One who walked out of the grave.
If you’ve never made Jesus the center of your life, that’s step one. Salvation isn't just about a ticket to heaven; it’s about receiving a new life right now. And if you are a believer but you’ve been trying to live on "grit," it’s time to ask for a fresh filling of the Holy Spirit. Ask God to replace your exhaustion with His endurance.

You Are Not Alone
The beautiful thing about Boundless is that we are a bridge. We know that many of you are searching for Jesus from behind a screen because walking into a building feels too heavy right now. That’s okay. We are here for you. But we also want to encourage you that you weren't meant to carry this, or even "resurrect", alone.
Community is where this power often manifests. When we pray for one another, when we study the Word together, we see the life of Christ moving between us.
Don't settle for grit. Grit will leave you tired. Resurrection power will leave you transformed. You are seen. You are loved. You are not forgotten. And through the power of Jesus Christ, you are never alone.
