I get this a lot. People say, "Layne, I just want to love people and follow Jesus. Why do we need a list of 16 truths?" The truth is, love needs a direction, and faith needs a foundation. Without a clear understanding of who God is and what He has said, our "faith" can quickly become whatever we want it to be, rather than what God has revealed it to be.

Scriptural integrity means we let the Bible speak for itself. It means we don't pick and choose the parts that fit our current mood or the current culture. If we want to experience the fullness of God's power, the kind of life-changing power we see moving in our Memphis communities, we have to be anchored in the Truth.

The Answer: A Roadmap for the Spiritually Curious

The 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God provide a biblical roadmap. They aren't meant to replace the Bible; they are meant to summarize its most essential teachings so we can stay aligned with God's heart. Let's break these down into the core essentials that shape our walk with Christ.

1. The Foundation: The Word and The Godhead

It all starts with the Bible. We believe the Scriptures are inspired by God, the infallible rule for how we live (Truth 1). If we don't start there, we're just guessing. From the Word, we learn that there is one true God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Truth 2).

Most importantly for our salvation, we recognize the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ (Truth 3). He isn't just a "good teacher" or a historical figure; He is the eternal Son of God who lived a sinless life, died for our mess, and rose again.

We have to be honest about our condition. Truth 4 reminds us of the Fall of Man. We’ve all missed the mark. But Truth 5 is the best news you’ll ever hear: The Salvation of Man. Salvation is found in Jesus Christ and Him alone. It’s not about being "good enough" or checking off a religious list. It’s about grace.

Finally, we look forward. We aren't just living for today. We have "The Blessed Hope", the resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord (Truth 13). From the Millennial Reign (Truth 14) to the Final Judgment (Truth 15) and the New Heavens and New Earth (Truth 16), our story ends in victory.

Understanding these truths isn't about passing a theology test. It's about stability. When you know that your salvation is secure in Christ, you can face the uncertainties of life in Memphis with peace.
