Bible Study : The Ultimate Guide to the 16 Fundamental Truths: Everything You Need to Grow

A Message from FA Memphis

The 16 Fundamental Truths are the core theological doctrines of the Assemblies of God that provide a clear biblical map for our faith. From the nature of God to the promise of Christ’s return, these truths keep us grounded in Scripture while we navigate our spiritual journey together.

The Scriptural Foundation

Before we dive into the details, let’s look at the cornerstone verses that support our understanding of God’s Word and His plan for us:

  • 2 Timothy 3:16: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness."

  • Matthew 28:19: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

  • John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

  • Acts 1:8: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Why These Truths Matter for Your Growth

I am so glad you’re here. Whether you are a lifelong believer or just starting to explore what it means to follow Jesus, having a solid foundation is everything. In a world that often feels like shifting sand, these 16 Fundamental Truths act as an anchor for the soul. They aren't just a list of rules; they are a description of who God is and how He relates to us.

When we look at a 16 Fundamental Truths Bible Study, we aren't just looking at history: we’re looking at our future. These doctrines represent a shared heritage within the Assemblies of God Memphis and around the world, ensuring that we stay true to the Gospel as it was handed down to us. In our community at Boundless, we believe that the Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails. These guardrails don't limit us; they protect us and keep us on the path toward a deeper relationship with Christ.

1. The Inspired Scriptures

The Bible is our ultimate authority. We believe the Old and New Testaments are verbally inspired by God. It’s the infallible rule of faith and conduct. When you read your Bible, you aren't just reading a book; you’re hearing the heart of the Father.

2. The One True God

We believe in the Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. One God, three distinct persons. It’s a beautiful mystery of unity and diversity that reflects how we are called to live in community with one another.

3. The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ

Jesus isn't just a good teacher; He is God in the flesh. We believe in His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His substitutionary work on the cross, His bodily resurrection, and His exaltation to the right hand of God. He is the center of everything we do.

4. The Fall of Man

Humans were created good and upright, but we chose to go our own way. This "fall" created a separation between us and God that we couldn't bridge on our own. Acknowledging this is the first step toward seeing our need for a Savior.

5. The Salvation of Man

This is the best news ever: Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. It’s a gift of grace. You are never forgotten, never alone, and deeply loved by God: so much so that He made a way for you to come home.

6. The Ordinances of the Church

We practice two main ordinances: Water Baptism by immersion and Holy Communion. These are outward signs of the inward work God is doing in our lives. They remind us of Christ's death and resurrection and our new life in Him.

7. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit

All believers are entitled to, and should ardently expect, the promise of the Father: the baptism in the Holy Spirit. This was the normal experience of the early Christian church and brings power for life and service. It’s about being equipped to love others better.

8. The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

We believe that the baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance. This is a personal and powerful encounter with the presence of God.

9. Sanctification

Sanctification is an act of separation from that which is evil, and of dedication unto God. It’s a progressive work of the Spirit. As we grow, we want our lives to reflect Jesus more and more. This includes being mindful of the media we consume. I always recommend using tools like VidAngel or “Enjoy Movies Your Way” to ensure your entertainment aligns with your values. For families looking to stay safe online, Bark and Covenant Eyes are excellent resources for accountability.

10. The Church and Its Mission

The Church is the Body of Christ. Our mission is to seek and save that which is lost, to be a corporate body in which man may worship God, and to be a channel of God’s purpose to build a body of saints being perfected in the image of His Son.

11. The Ministry

A divinely called and scripturally ordained ministry has been provided by our Lord for the threefold purpose of leading the Church in: (1) Evangelization of the world, (2) Worship of God, and (3) Building a body of saints.

12. Divine Healing

Healing is an integral part of the gospel. Deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of all believers. We believe God still heals today because He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

13. The Blessed Hope

The resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord is the imminent and blessed hope of the Church. We look forward to being with Him!

14. The Millennial Reign of Christ

The second coming of Christ includes the rapture of the saints, followed by the visible return of Christ with His saints to reign on earth for one thousand years. This will bring the salvation of national Israel and the establishment of universal peace.

15. The Final Judgment

There will be a final judgment in which the wicked dead will be raised and judged according to their works. This is a sobering truth that reminds us of the urgency of the Gospel and the importance of our mission to share the love of Jesus.

16. The New Heavens and the New Earth

"We, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness." This is our ultimate home, where God will wipe away every tear and we will dwell in His presence forever.

Practical Steps for Spiritual Growth

Understanding these truths is just the beginning. To truly grow, we have to put them into practice. Here are a few ways you can start today:

  • Daily Scriptural Immersion: Set aside 15 minutes each morning to read the Word. Let the 16 Fundamental Truths guide your study.

  • Intentional Prayer: Talk to God about what you’re learning. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the depth of these truths to your heart.

  • Community Engagement: Don't do this alone. Join a group where you can discuss these doctrines and how they apply to modern life.

  • Digital Stewardship: Use the safety tools I mentioned earlier (Bark, Covenant Eyes) to protect your spiritual focus.

I know that diving into "doctrine" can sometimes feel intimidating, but remember that these truths are meant to bring you closer to Jesus. They help us understand that we serve a God of order, a God of love, and a God who has a specific plan for your life. When we say the Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails, we’re saying that we trust God’s design more than our own impulses. That trust is where true freedom is found.
