Bible Study: The Ultimate Guide to the 16 Fundamental Truths - Everything You Need to Succeed in Your Spiritual Journey

Have you ever felt like your faith was missing a clear map? We all have moments where we wonder if the "spiritual house" we are building is actually sitting on solid ground. Whether you are a brand-new believer or have been walking with Jesus for decades, having a clear understanding of core biblical principles is what changes a "shaky" faith into a "boundless" one.

In the world of Pentecostal faith, specifically within the Assemblies of God, we look to a set of non-negotiable doctrines known as the 16 Fundamental Truths. These aren't just dry theological statements; they are the "spiritual DNA" of a life lived in the power of the Holy Spirit.

What are the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God?

The Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths are the core biblical doctrines that provide a firm foundation for the Christian faith. These truths cover essential beliefs including the inspiration of Scripture, the deity of Christ, salvation through grace, the baptism in the Holy Spirit, divine healing, and the hope of Christ's return. Understanding these doctrines helps believers navigate their spiritual journey with clarity, biblical integrity, and deep purpose.

The Foundation: God and His Word

Everything we do at Boundless Online Church is built on the belief that God has not left us to figure life out on our own. He has spoken, and He has revealed Himself.

1. The Scriptures Inspired

The Bible is our ultimate "North Star." We believe the Old and New Testaments are verbally inspired by God and are the revelation of God to man, the infallible, authoritative rule of faith and conduct (2 Timothy 3:15-17). In a world of "your truth" and "my truth," having the Scriptures as an anchor is essential for spiritual success.

2. The One True God

We believe in the Trinity: one God who exists eternally in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This isn't just a math problem to solve; it’s a relationship to enter. God is our Creator, our Redeemer, and our constant Companion.

3. The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ

Jesus wasn't just a "good teacher." He is the eternal Son of God. We believe in His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His substitutionary work on the cross, His bodily resurrection, and His exaltation to the right hand of God. If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.

The Human Condition and the Gift of Salvation

Understanding the "16 Fundamental Truths Bible Study" requires us to be honest about where we stand without God.

4. The Fall of Man

Man was created good and upright, for God said, "Let us make man in our image." However, by voluntary transgression, man fell and thereby incurred not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is separation from God (Genesis 1:26, 27; 2:17; 3:6; Romans 5:12-19).

5. The Salvation of Man

This is one of the four Cardinal Doctrines of the Assemblies of God. Man's only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. It is a gift of grace that you can't earn, but you must receive.

6. The Ordinances of the Church

We practice two main ordinances:

  • Baptism in Water: A public declaration that we have died with Christ and have been raised with Him to walk in newness of life.

  • Holy Communion: A symbolic act where we remember Christ’s suffering and death and look forward to His second coming.

Empowerment: The Work of the Holy Spirit

What sets the Pentecostal movement apart is a deep emphasis on the active, empowering presence of the Holy Spirit today.

7. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit

All believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father, the baptism in the Holy Spirit. This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church. With it comes the enduement of power for life and service.

8. The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

The baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance (Acts 2:4).

9. Sanctification

Sanctification is an act of separation from that which is evil, and of dedication unto God. It’s the process of becoming more like Jesus every day. It’s not about being "perfect," but about being "positioned" toward God.

Our Mission and Community in Memphis and Beyond

When we talk about Assemblies of God Memphis, we are talking about a rich history of believers who cared about their neighbors. From the flagship First Assembly Memphis, the movement has always been about community.

10. The Church and Its Mission

The Church is the Body of Christ. Every believer, born of the Spirit, is an integral part of the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn. Our mission is fourfold:

  1. To be a corporate body in which man may worship God.

  2. To be a channel of God’s purpose to build a body of saints being perfected in the image of His Son.

  3. To be a people who demonstrate God’s love and compassion to all the world.

  4. To evangelize the world.

11. The Ministry

A divinely called and scripturally ordained ministry has been provided by our Lord for the fourfold purpose of leading the Church in evangelization, worship, building up the body, and meeting human needs with ministries of love and compassion.

12. Divine Healing

Divine healing is an integral part of the gospel. Deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of all believers (Isaiah 53:4, 5; Matthew 8:16, 17; James 5:14-16). At Boundless, we believe that God still heals today: physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

The Blessed Hope: Our Future Confidence

The final truths remind us that this world is not our final home. We live with an "eternal perspective."

13. The Blessed Hope

The resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord is the imminent and blessed hope of the Church (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17; Titus 2:13).

14. The Millennial Reign of Christ

The second coming of Christ includes the rapture of the saints, followed by the visible return of Christ with His saints to reign on earth for one thousand years. This millennial reign will bring the salvation of national Israel and the establishment of universal peace.

15. The Final Judgment

There will be a final judgment in which the wicked dead will be raised and judged according to their works. Whosoever is not found written in the Book of Life will be consigned to everlasting punishment.

16. The New Heavens and the New Earth

"We, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness" (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21, 22). This is our ultimate destination: eternal fellowship with our Creator in a world made new.

The 16 Fundamental Truths aren't just for textbooks; they are for your kitchen table and your workplace.

  1. Read the Word with Purpose: Don't just scan the pages. Ask, "How does this reveal God’s character (Truth 2) or my need for Him (Truth 5)?"

  2. Pray for Empowerment: If you feel weak or overwhelmed, remember that the Holy Spirit is promised to you (Truth 7). You don't have to live on your own strength.

  3. Connect with Community: You weren't meant to do this alone. Whether you are in Memphis or halfway across the world, joining a Bible Study Group can help you process these truths with others.
