Bible Study: What Are Spiritual Gifts and How Do I Discover Mine?

Spiritual gifts are supernatural empowerments given by the Holy Spirit to every believer for the purpose of building up the Church and serving others. Unlike natural talents, these gifts are "grace-gifts" (charismata) intended to demonstrate God's power and love, helping the community grow in faith, unity, and maturity in Jesus Christ.

This comprehensive guide explores the biblical foundations of spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12, offering practical, Spirit-led steps to help you identify, activate, and steward your unique gifting for God's glory and the common good.

Understanding the Nature of Spiritual Gifts

To begin our journey into spiritual gifts, we must first understand what they are, and what they are not. The New Testament uses the Greek word charisma, which literally means "a gift of grace." These are not rewards for good behavior or badges of spiritual maturity. Instead, they are tools given by God to help us carry out His mission on earth.

While everyone is born with natural talents, such as an aptitude for music, sports, or mathematics, spiritual gifts are distinct. They are specifically bestowed by the Holy Spirit upon a person’s conversion or through a subsequent "filling" or "baptism" in the Spirit. While God often uses our natural personality and talents as a canvas, the power behind a spiritual gift is entirely divine. When you use a spiritual gift, the result is more than just a job well-done; it is a spiritual encounter that strengthens someone else's relationship with God.

At Boundless Online Church, we believe that you were not created to be a spectator in the Kingdom of God. You were created to be a participant. Understanding your spiritual gifts is the key to moving from the sidelines into the meaningful, life-giving work that God has prepared for you. If you've ever wondered about your deeper purpose, you might find clarity in our post on What Is the Meaning of Life?, which explores our primary calling to know and serve our Creator.

The Biblical Foundation: 1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12

The Apostle Paul provides the most extensive teaching on spiritual gifts in his letters to the early churches. These passages serve as the "instruction manual" for how the Holy Spirit operates through human beings.

The Diversity and Unity of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12)

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul uses the analogy of the human body to describe the Church. Just as a body has many parts, eyes, ears, hands, and feet, that perform different functions, the Church is one body made of many members with diverse gifts. Paul emphasizes that:

  • There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.

  • There are varieties of service, but the same Lord.

  • The Spirit distributes these gifts to each one individually as He wills.

  • The manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person for the "common good."

This means that no gift is superior to another. The person with the gift of administration is just as vital as the person with the gift of prophecy. When one part of the body fails to use its gift, the entire body suffers. This theology of interconnectedness is why we emphasize the importance of community, even in a digital space.

The Practical Service of the Gifts (Romans 12)

In Romans 12, the focus shifts toward the practical application of gifts in everyday life. Paul urges believers to use their gifts "in proportion to our faith." The gifts listed here are often called "motivational" or "functional" gifts because they describe the way we naturally relate to others within the church environment:

  • Prophecy: Speaking forth the mind and counsel of God.

  • Serving: Finding practical ways to meet the needs of others.

  • Teaching: Explaining and applying the truths of Scripture.

  • Exhortation: Encouraging, comforting, and motivating others in their faith.

  • Giving: Sharing resources with extraordinary generosity and cheerfulness.

  • Leading: Providing direction and oversight with diligence.

  • Mercy: Showing compassion to those who are suffering or in need.

Whether you are serving in a physical building or connecting through our Bible Study Club, these gifts are the "spiritual DNA" that makes the body of Christ function effectively.

The Assemblies of God Position: A Continuationist View

One of the most common questions regarding spiritual gifts is: "Are these supernatural gifts still for today?" Some believe that gifts like tongues, healing, and prophecy ceased after the time of the Apostles (a view called cessationism). However, at Boundless, we align with the Assemblies of God position, which is "continuationist."

We believe that the Holy Spirit has never stopped empowering the Church with all the gifts mentioned in the New Testament. In fact, we believe that as the world becomes more complex and spiritually noisy, we need the "manifestation of the Spirit" more than ever. This includes the gifts of healing and miracles, which demonstrate God's compassion for the hurting. We believe in divine healing because we serve a God who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. If you are in need of a miracle today, please reach out to our Prayer Wall so we can stand in faith with you.

The AG position also emphasizes the "Baptism in the Holy Spirit," an experience distinct from and following the new birth, which provides the believer with an endowment of power for life and service. This experience is often accompanied by the initial physical sign of speaking in other tongues, as seen in the book of Acts. However, the ultimate "evidence" of a Spirit-filled life is a heart that burns with love for Jesus and a life that bears the Fruit of the Spirit.

A Categorized List of Spiritual Gifts

While there is no single "exhaustive" list in the Bible, theologians often group the gifts mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, Ephesians 4, and 1 Peter 4 into three general categories:

1. Manifestation Gifts (Supernatural Power)

These are often seen as "spur of the moment" empowerments where the Spirit breaks through the natural order to accomplish something divine:

  • Word of Wisdom: A supernatural insight into how to apply knowledge to a specific situation.

  • Word of Knowledge: Knowing a fact or truth about a person or situation that could not be known by natural means.

  • Faith: A surge of confidence in God’s power to do the impossible.

  • Gifts of Healing: Supernatural restoration of health.

  • Working of Miracles: Acts that bypass natural laws.

  • Prophecy: A message from God to strengthen, encourage, or comfort.

  • Discernment of Spirits: The ability to distinguish between divine, human, and demonic influences.

  • Tongues and Interpretation: Speaking in a language unknown to the speaker, and the supernatural interpretation of that message for the congregation.

2. Ministry Gifts (The Five-Fold Offices)

In Ephesians 4, Paul describes specific "office" gifts that Jesus gave to the Church to equip the saints for ministry:

  • Apostles: Pioneers who establish new works and provide oversight.

  • Prophets: Those who hear from God and speak truth to the culture and the Church.

  • Evangelists: Those with a special burden and ability to win the lost to Christ.

  • Pastors (Shepherds): Those who care for, protect, and nurture the "flock."

  • Teachers: Those who ground the Church in the sound doctrine of the Atonement and the Word of God.

3. Serving Gifts (Practical Empowerment)

These are the daily "workhorses" of the Church, often invisible but absolutely essential:

  • Administration: Organizing people and projects to achieve spiritual goals.

  • Hospitality: Making others feel welcomed, seen, and loved.

  • Helps/Service: Assisting others in their ministry so the work can flourish.

  • Giving: Providing financial and material support with wisdom and joy.

Practical Steps to Discover Your Spiritual Gifts

Discovery is rarely a lightning bolt moment. It is usually a journey of faithfulness. If you are asking, "How do I know what my gift is?" follow these practical, Spirit-led steps:

Step 1: Start with Prayer and Surrender

The Holy Spirit is the Giver of the gifts. It only makes sense to ask Him directly. Pray, "Lord, I want to be a vessel for Your glory. Show me how You have equipped me to serve Your people." Before you seek a specific gift, seek the Giver. When your heart is fully surrendered to Jesus, you become "spiritually sensitive" to the prompts of the Holy Spirit.

Step 2: Examine Your Passions and Burdens

God often places a "holy discontent" or a "burning passion" in your heart that aligns with your gifting. Ask yourself:

  • What needs in the world or the Church make my heart break? (This might point toward Mercy or Prophecy).

  • What activities give me energy rather than draining me? (This might point toward Teaching or Administration).

  • When I see a problem, is my first instinct to pray, to organize a solution, or to go hug the person involved?

Step 3: Just Start Serving

You cannot steer a parked car. Many people wait for a "clear call" before they do anything, but gifts are often discovered in the "doing." Volunteer for a kids' ministry, join an online prayer group, or offer to help with a tech team. As you serve in various capacities, you will notice that in some areas, you are just "doing a job," while in others, you feel a supernatural "flow" and see spiritual results. That "flow" is often the sign of a gift being activated.

Step 4: Listen to the Feedback of the Body

Because spiritual gifts are for the "common good," other people will often see your gift before you do. Has anyone ever said to you, "When you prayed for me, I felt a peace I can't explain"? Or, "When you explained that Bible verse, it finally clicked for me"? Pay attention to those comments. The Church is a mirror that reflects the Spirit's work in your life.

Stewardship: Growing and Protecting Your Gift

Once you have a sense of your gifting, the next step is stewardship. In 1 Timothy 4:14, Paul tells young Timothy, "Do not neglect the gift that is in you." Gifts are like muscles, they grow stronger with use and atrophy with neglect.

The Priority of Love (1 Corinthians 13)

It is no accident that the famous "Love Chapter" (1 Corinthians 13) is sandwiched directly between two chapters on spiritual gifts. Paul is making a vital point: Spiritual gifts without love are spiritually worthless. If I speak in the tongues of angels but have not love, I am just a noisy gong. Love is the "operating system" for the gifts. If your motivation is to look important or to prove how "spiritual" you are, you have missed the point. True spiritual gifts always point people toward Jesus, never toward the person using the gift.

Staying Grounded in the Word

Gifts must always be tested by the Word of God. The Holy Spirit will never prompt you to do something that contradicts Scripture. For example, a "prophecy" that encourages someone to violate a biblical command is not from God. This is why we encourage every believer to be a student of the Bible. If you want to grow in discernment, consider reading our post on Why True Faith Refuses to Bow Down to Culture.

Accountability and Community

Gifts are never meant to be used in isolation. We are called to use our gifts within the context of a healthy Christian community. This provides a safety net of accountability. If you are operating in a "manifestation" gift, you need leaders and mature believers who can help you refine your hearing and ensure that the gift is being used decently and in order.

A Pastoral Prayer for Your Journey

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You have not left us to serve You in our own strength. Thank You for the precious Holy Spirit and the "grace-gifts" You have poured out upon Your Church. I pray for the person reading this right now. Lord, remove the scales from their eyes so they can see the unique beauty and purpose You have placed within them. Quiet the voice of the enemy that says they have nothing to offer. Ignite a holy passion in their heart to serve others. May they walk in the power of the Spirit, always motivated by love, and may their lives be a testament to Your goodness. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a spiritual gift and the Fruit of the Spirit?

The Fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, etc.) refers to the character of Christ being formed in every believer. Every Christian is expected to have all the fruit. Spiritual gifts refer to the service or power given for ministry. Not every believer has every gift, but every believer should strive for all the fruit.

Can a person have more than one spiritual gift?

Yes. Many believers operate in a "cluster" of gifts. For example, someone with a gift of teaching may also have a gift of wisdom or exhortation. The Spirit distributes them as needed for the work at hand.

Can I lose a spiritual gift?

Romans 11:29 says that "the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable." However, you can lose the anointing or the effectiveness of a gift if you live in persistent, unrepentant sin or if you use the gift for selfish gain. We are called to be holy vessels, fit for the Master's use.

How do I know if a "prophetic word" is really from God?

Biblical discernment involves three tests: Does it align with Scripture? Does it bear witness with your spirit? And does it glorify Jesus? We are told in 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21 not to despise prophecies but to "test everything; hold fast what is good."
