Bible Study: What Are the 16 Fundamental Truths?

The 16 Fundamental Truths are the core biblical beliefs that unify the Assemblies of God, providing a solid foundation for your spiritual growth. These truths focus on the nature of God, the work of Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit, helping you navigate life with scriptural clarity and hope within the Memphis community.

Understanding where you stand is the first step toward walking with confidence. For many in Memphis, life can feel like a series of shifting sands. Whether you’re navigating the busy streets of the 901 or searching for peace from the quiet of your home, having a bedrock of truth changes everything. The Assemblies of God established these sixteen non-negotiable tenets not as a replacement for the Bible, but as a summary of what the Bible teaches. They are the guardrails that keep our faith on the path and the light that helps us see the way forward.

The Foundation of Truth: Scripture and God

Everything begins with the Word. The first fundamental truth is that the Scriptures are inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:15-17). This means the Bible isn't just a collection of ancient stories; it is God’s direct revelation of Himself to us. In a world of "fake news" and conflicting opinions, the Bible remains our only infallible rule of faith and conduct. When you open your Bible at home or join us for an online Bible study, you are engaging with the living voice of God.

Following the authority of Scripture is the revelation of the One True God (Deuteronomy 6:4). We believe in one God who exists eternally in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This Trinity is a mystery of love and unity, showing us that God Himself is relational. This matters for your journey because it means you were created by a God who values connection. You are never truly alone because the Triune God is always present.

The Person and Work of Jesus Christ

Central to everything we believe is the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:23). We believe Jesus is fully God and fully man. He lived a sinless life, died a substitutionary death on the cross to pay for our sins, rose bodily from the grave, and is now exalted at the right hand of God. This isn't just history; it’s the hope of Memphis. Because Jesus is alive, transformation is possible for anyone, anywhere.

This leads us to the reality of the Fall of Man (Genesis 1:26-27). We recognize that humanity was created good, but we chose to go our own way, resulting in spiritual death and separation from God. But God didn't leave us there. The fifth truth is the Salvation of Man (Titus 3:5-7). Salvation is a free gift received through repentance and faith in Jesus. It’s not about how hard you work or how "good" you are; it’s about what Jesus has already done for you. Walking in the Power of the Spirit

The Power of the Holy Spirit

One of the most beautiful aspects of the Assemblies of God tradition is our emphasis on the Holy Spirit. We believe in two essential "ordinances": Water Baptism and Holy Communion. These are outward signs of an inward work, public declarations that we belong to Jesus (Matthew 28:19; 1 Corinthians 11:26).

Beyond these, we lean into the Baptism in the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4, 8). This is an experience subsequent to salvation that empowers believers for life and service. It’s the "extra gear" for your spiritual life, giving you the courage to witness and the strength to endure. We also believe in the initial physical evidence of this baptism, which is speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4). This isn't about being "better" than others; it’s about being fully equipped for the mission God has for you in our city and beyond.

Growth, Healing, and the Mission of the Church

Faith is meant to grow. Sanctification is the process of being set apart for God and becoming more like Jesus every day (Romans 12:1-2). It’s a journey, not a destination. As you connect with others in our digital discipleship groups, you’ll find that we’re all in this process together: learning, stumbling, and getting back up by His grace.

The Church and Its Mission (Ephesians 1:22-23) is another vital truth. The Church isn't a building; it’s the Body of Christ. Its mission is to evangelize the world, worship God, and build up believers. Even if you can't walk into a physical building in Memphis today, you are part of the Church when you engage with our community online. Coupled with this is The Ministry (Ephesians 4:11, 16): the belief that God calls specific leaders to help us grow and serve.

One of the most comforting truths for many is Divine Healing (Isaiah 53:4-5). We believe that deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of all believers. If you are struggling with illness or pain, our prayer team is ready to stand with you. You can submit a prayer request anytime at www.boundlessonlinechurch.org.

Our Future Hope: The End and the New Beginning

Finally, we look forward to what is coming. The Blessed Hope (Titus 2:13) is the imminent return of Jesus to gather His Church. This is followed by the Millennial Reign of Christ, where Jesus will reign on earth for a thousand years of peace (Revelation 19:11-16).

We also acknowledge the gravity of The Final Judgment (Revelation 20:11-15). We believe that every life matters and every choice has eternal significance. But for those who know Jesus, the story ends in beauty: The New Heavens and the New Earth (2 Peter 3:13). We look forward to a world where there is no more pain, no more crying, and no more death.

Truth for Every Day

Living out these truths in Memphis means more than just knowing facts; it means living with a different kind of heart. It means being a neighbor who offers hope, a friend who prays with power, and a believer who stays grounded when the world feels chaotic. Whether you are a lifelong resident of the Mid-South or just passing through our digital doors, these sixteen truths are your anchor.

You don't have to figure it all out on your own. Our community is here to help you walk through each of these truths, one day at a time. From our Sunday worship notes to our late-night prayer groups, we are dedicated to making sure you feel seen, loved, and never alone on your journey toward Jesus.

Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Word and the clarity of these truths. We thank You that in the middle of our busy lives in Memphis, we can find a solid foundation in You. Help us to hide these truths in our hearts so that we might not sin against You and so that we might reflect Your light to everyone we meet. Strengthen those who are hurting, heal those who are sick, and give peace to the anxious. We ask that You would guide us as we grow closer to You and to each other. Amen.
