Bible Study: What Are the 16 Fundamental Truths and Why Do They Matter?

The 16 Fundamental Truths are the core biblical beliefs that provide a solid foundation for your faith journey. They aren't just dry doctrines; they are practical promises from God's Word that offer clarity, hope, and direction for everyone searching for truth in a noisy digital world.

Understanding these truths helps you navigate life's challenges with a steady heart and a clear mind. Whether you are searching for a deeper connection with Jesus or looking for an Assemblies of God Memphis community, this 16 Fundamental Truths Bible Study is designed to help you see how God’s plan unfolds for your life.

The first truth is the inspiration of the Scriptures. We believe the Bible is God’s living Word, a divine letter written to humanity. 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that "All Scripture is God-breathed." This means that when you open your Bible, you aren't just reading history; you are hearing the voice of your Creator. It is the ultimate guide for how we live, love, and lead. In a world of shifting opinions, the Bible remains our unshakeable anchor.

Next, we recognize the one true God. He has revealed Himself as the eternal "I AM," the Creator of heaven and earth and the Redeemer of mankind. He exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is what we call the Trinity. Deuteronomy 6:4 reminds us, "The Lord our God, the Lord is one." He is not a distant force; He is a loving Father who knows your name and cares for your soul.

The third truth focuses on the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is not just a good teacher or a historical figure; He is the eternal Son of God. He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, performed miracles, died on the cross for our sins, rose from the dead, and is now exalted at the right hand of God. When you look at Jesus, you see the heart of God. He is the bridge between our brokenness and God's holiness.

We must also understand the fall of man. God created humanity good and upright, but we chose to go our own way. This voluntary rebellion brought sin and death into the world. It’s why we feel that inner ache: the sense that something is missing. Romans 5:12 explains how sin entered the world through one man, affecting us all. But this truth is not meant to discourage you; it’s meant to show you why we need a Savior.

This leads us to the salvation of man. This is our only hope. Through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, we can be forgiven and restored. Salvation is a free gift received through repentance and faith. It’s not something you earn by being "good enough"; it’s something you receive by trusting in what Jesus has already done. Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us that it is by grace we are saved. If you are feeling overwhelmed or lost, know that salvation is available to you right now.

Within the life of the church, we observe two ordinances: water baptism and holy communion. Baptism by immersion is a public declaration of your new life in Christ: a way of saying the old you is gone and a new you has risen. Communion is a symbolic meal where we remember Jesus’ sacrifice. These are not just rituals; they are sacred moments of connection where we physically participate in the story of our redemption.

The baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct and vital experience for every believer. This was the normal experience of the early church, and it is available for you today. It brings an endowment of power for life and service. Acts 1:8 says, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses." This power isn't for our own glory, but to help us share the love of Jesus with a world in need.

The initial physical evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues. As we see in Acts 2:4, the believers were filled and began to speak as the Spirit enabled them. This gift is a beautiful way to communicate with God beyond our own understanding and serves as a sign of the Spirit’s presence and work in our lives.

Sanctification is the ongoing process of being set apart for God. It begins the moment you are saved, but it continues every day as you grow more like Jesus. It involves turning away from what is harmful and turning toward what is holy. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 prays that our whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless. It’s a journey of transformation where God’s grace helps you overcome old habits and find new peace.

The Church and its mission are central to God’s plan. The Church is the Body of Christ, and every believer has a place within it. Our mission is simple: to seek and save the lost, to worship God together, and to build up one another in love. Whether you connect with a church in Memphis or join us online, you are part of a global family called to reflect Christ’s light in the darkness.

God also provides the ministry to lead and serve the Church. He calls men and women to be pastors, teachers, and leaders who help us understand the Bible and grow in our faith. According to Ephesians 4:11-13, these leaders are given to equip the people of God for works of service. This ensures that the Church remains healthy, focused, and ready to meet the needs of the community.

Divine healing is a provision of Christ’s work on the cross. We believe that God still heals today. James 5:14-16 encourages us to pray for the sick, believing that the prayer of faith can bring restoration. While we value medical professionals, we ultimately look to God as our Great Physician. If you are hurting physically or emotionally, there is hope in the healing touch of Jesus.

The Blessed Hope refers to the Rapture: the moment when Jesus returns for His Church. Those who have died in Christ will rise first, and then those who are alive will be caught up together with them to meet the Lord in the air. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 provides this incredible promise. It’s a reminder that this world is not our final home and that a glorious reunion awaits us.

Following the Rapture, we look forward to the millennial reign of Christ. Jesus will return visibly with His saints to rule the earth for a thousand years. This will be a time of universal peace and the restoration of all things. Isaiah 11:6-9 describes a world where the wolf lives with the lamb: a picture of the perfect harmony that only Christ’s leadership can bring.

The final judgment is a solemn truth. There will be a day when every person will stand before God. For those who have rejected His love and salvation, it is a day of judgment. Revelation 20:11-15 describes the Great White Throne. This truth reminds us of the urgency of the Gospel and the importance of sharing God’s grace while there is still time.

Finally, we look forward to the new heavens and the new earth. God will wipe away every tear, and there will be no more death, mourning, or pain. As promised in Revelation 21:1, God will create a perfect home where we will live with Him forever. This is the ultimate happy ending for everyone who puts their trust in Jesus.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the clarity and hope found in Your Word. We ask that these truths would move from our heads to our hearts, transforming the way we live and love. For the one who is searching today, let them feel Your presence. For the one who is lonely, be their companion. For the one who is anxious, be their peace. Help us to grow closer to Jesus every day as we study Your promises together. In Jesus' name, Amen.
