Bible Study: What Are the 16 Fundamental Truths and Why Do They Matter for Believers Worldwide?

Jun 25
6 min read

The 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God matter because sound doctrine strengthens your spiritual life, keeps you rooted in Scripture, and helps you recognize truth in a confusing world. These biblical convictions point believers to salvation in Jesus Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit, and the hope of His return.

This guide explains what the 16 Fundamental Truths are, why doctrine matters in everyday Christian living, and how these truths help believers stay steady, hopeful, and spiritually healthy. If you want to grow in biblical confidence, this article will give you a strong starting point.

Bible Verses:

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.” (Romans 1:16)

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

“For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16)

The Foundation of Our Faith

I want to welcome you home to a deeper understanding of what we believe. Sometimes, theology can feel like a heavy word, but at its heart, it’s just the way we describe the character of the God who loves us. In a world where truth often feels like it's shifting like sand, having a solid foundation isn't just a good idea, it's essential for our survival and our growth as followers of Jesus.

When we talk about the 16 Fundamental Truths, we aren't just talking about a list of rules or dry academic statements. We are talking about the "why" behind our "how." These truths were established over a century ago to keep us anchored in the Word of God, ensuring that no matter how the culture around us changes, our mission remains clear. I always tell our community that the Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails.

Understanding the 16 Truths

Let’s walk through these together. Think of this as a map for your spiritual journey. These aren't meant to be complicated; they are meant to be transformative. They are meant to remind you that you are never forgotten, never alone, and deeply loved by God.

1. The Scriptures Inspired: We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God. It’s our final authority. When we look for direction in our families or our careers, we don't look to the latest trends first; we look to the Word.

2. The One True God: God has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent “I AM.” He is the Creator of heaven and earth and the Redeemer of mankind, manifested as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

3. The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ: Jesus is fully God and fully man. We believe in His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His substitutionary work on the cross, His bodily resurrection, and His exaltation to the right hand of God.

4. The Fall of Man: Man was created good and upright, but man by voluntary transgression fell and thereby incurred not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is separation from God.

5. The Salvation of Man: This is the heartbeat of our message. Man’s only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ the Son of God. Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no other way, and this gift is available to everyone who calls on His name.

6. The Ordinances of the Church: We practice water baptism by immersion and Holy Communion. These are outward signs of an inward work of grace.

7. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit: All believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father, the baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire, according to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church.

8. The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit: The baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance.

9. Sanctification: Sanctification is an act of separation from that which is evil, and of dedication unto God. It’s a progressive work, a lifelong process of becoming more like Jesus in our thoughts, words, and actions.

10. The Church and Its Mission: The Church is the Body of Christ. Each believer, born of the Spirit, is an integral part of the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn. Our mission is to seek and save that which is lost, to worship God, to build a body of believers in the image of His Son, and to demonstrate His love and compassion to all the world.

11. The Ministry: A divinely called and scripturally ordained ministry has been provided by our Lord for the fourfold purpose of leading the Church in evangelization, worship, edification, and meeting human needs with love.

12. Divine Healing: Divine healing is an integral part of the gospel. Deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement, and is the privilege of all believers. God still heals today!

13. The Blessed Hope: The resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord is the imminent and blessed hope of the Church.

14. The Millennial Reign of Christ: The second coming of Christ includes the rapture of the saints, followed by the visible return of Christ with His saints to reign on earth for one thousand years.

15. The Final Judgment: There will be a final judgment in which the wicked dead will be raised and judged according to their works. Whosoever is not found written in the Book of Life will be consigned to the everlasting punishment in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone.

16. The New Heavens and the New Earth: "We, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness."

Why Scriptural Integrity Matters for You

You might wonder why we need all sixteen. Can't we just focus on love? Well, the truth is that these doctrines define what love actually looks like. Love without truth is sentimentality; truth without love is legalism. By holding to these 16 Fundamental Truths, we ensure that we are following the actual Jesus of the Bible, not a version of Him we’ve made up to fit our own preferences.

In our digital age, it’s easier than ever to get distracted. Whether you are scrolling through social media or watching movies, the world is constantly trying to push its own set of "truths" on you. That’s why I always recommend staying vigilant about what you consume. If you are looking for media that aligns with these values, I encourage you to use services like VidAngel or “Enjoy Movies Your Way” to keep your home environment clean and family-safe. For online safety, tools like Bark and Covenant Eyes are vital for keeping your digital life accountable and healthy.

Living out these truths isn't about being perfect. It’s about being positioned. When you position your heart toward the Word of God, you are in the best place to receive His grace. These truths remind us that salvation is exclusively through Jesus Christ. There is no universalism here, just the beautiful, narrow, and life-giving path that Jesus laid out for us. He is the way, the truth, and the life.

I want you to feel empowered by these truths. They aren't meant to hold you back; they are meant to set you free. When you know who God is (Truth 2), who you are in Him (Truth 5), and where you are going (Truth 16), the anxieties of this world start to lose their grip on your heart.

Practical Steps for Daily Study

How do we make these truths part of our daily lives? It starts with the first one: The Scriptures Inspired. Make the Bible your primary source of nutrition. Don't just read it; let it read you. Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate the text as you study. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, start with the "Cardinal Doctrines", Salvation, Baptism in the Holy Spirit, Divine Healing, and the Second Coming. These four are the core pillars of our mission and a great place to begin your deep dive.

A Prayer for the Reader

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the person reading this right now. I ask that You would settle these truths deep into their spirit. In moments of doubt, remind them of Your inspired Word. In moments of weakness, remind them of the power of Your Holy Spirit. Let them feel the assurance of their salvation and the excitement of Your soon return. Help us to live lives that reflect Your integrity and Your boundless love. Amen.
