Have you ever wished you could just hit "restart" on your life, wiping the slate clean and starting over with a brand-new heart and a clear conscience?
What exactly is the "New Birth," and why does it matter for you today?
To be "born again", a term known theologically as regeneration, is the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit where a person who repents and believes in Jesus Christ is made spiritually alive. It is not a self-improvement plan or a moral adjustment; it is a radical inner transformation where God creates a new life within you, forgiving your past and giving you a new nature to live for Him.
Why the New Birth is Necessary
In the Assemblies of God, we believe that salvation is the core of our faith, one of the 16 Fundamental Truths that anchor our doctrine. But why is "being born again" the starting point?
In John 3:3-7, Jesus has a late-night conversation with a religious leader named Nicodemus. Despite Nicodemus’s knowledge and status, Jesus tells him something shocking: "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."
Jesus wasn't talking about a physical rebirth. He was explaining that our natural human birth only gives us physical life. To have spiritual life, to truly know God and enter His Kingdom, we need a spiritual birth. Without it, we are spiritually disconnected from our Creator.

The Spiritual Reality: From Death to Life
Before we experience this new birth, the Bible describes our spiritual condition in sobering terms. In Ephesians 2:1-5, the apostle Paul explains that we were "dead in trespasses and sins."
A person who is spiritually dead cannot reach out to God on their own strength. It takes a miracle. But because God is "rich in mercy," He makes us alive together with Christ. This transition from spiritual death to spiritual life is the essence of being born again. It is a gift of grace, not something we can earn by being "good enough."
Definition Block: Regeneration Regeneration is the biblical term for the "new birth." It refers to the instantaneous work of the Holy Spirit that imparts spiritual life to a repentant sinner. It is the "washing" and "renewal" (Titus 3:5) that makes a person a child of God.
How Does the New Birth Happen?
If being born again is a miracle, how do you receive it? It isn't a complicated ritual; it is a response to the Gospel.
Titus 3:5 tells us, "He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit."
According to Assemblies of God doctrine, the new birth happens when:
You Repent: You acknowledge your sin and turn away from your old way of living.
You Believe: You place your full trust in Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection as the only way to be right with God.
The Spirit Acts: The moment you trust Christ, the Holy Spirit "washes" your spirit, removes the old nature of sin, and plants the new life of Christ within you.

What Changes in a Believer’s Life?
The most famous description of this change is found in 2 Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."
When you are born again, you are not just a "better version" of yourself. You are a new creation. This doesn't mean you become perfect overnight, but it means your "spiritual DNA" has changed.
Old Life (Before New Birth) | New Life (After New Birth) |
Spiritually dead (Eph 2:1) | Made alive with Christ (Eph 2:5) |
Followed the ways of the world | Led by the Holy Spirit |
Burdened by guilt and shame | Justified and forgiven |
No power over sin | Empowered to live for God |
Separated from God | Adopted as a child of God |

5 Signs of the New Birth
How do you know if the new birth has taken place? While it is an inner work of the Spirit, it produces outward evidence:
A New Love for God: You find yourself wanting to pray, read the Bible, and know Him more.
A Desire for Holiness: You begin to care about what pleases God and feel a healthy conviction when you stray.
A Love for People: You find a new capacity to love others, especially your brothers and sisters in Christ.
Peace of Mind: The heavy weight of "trying to be enough" is replaced by the peace of knowing you are accepted in Christ.
A Global Heartbeat: You realize you are part of something bigger, God’s Kingdom, and you want others to know the same hope.
