Most of us wouldn’t dream of starting the day without a phone charge, a cup of coffee, or a glance at the morning news, yet we often overlook the most vital source of energy for the human soul.
What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit every morning?
Being filled with the Holy Spirit every morning is a daily, intentional surrender to God’s presence and control. Unlike the initial baptism in the Holy Spirit, which is a decisive empowering event, "filling" is a repeatable, ongoing experience where a believer invites the Spirit to lead their thoughts, words, and actions for the day ahead.
Why We Need a Fresh Infilling for a New Day
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we cherish the profound experience of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. It is a landmark moment, a "second work of grace" that empowers the believer for witness and service, often marked by the biblical evidence of speaking in other tongues. But if the Baptism is the doorway to power, the daily "filling" is the walk that follows.
Think of it like this: A car is manufactured with a fuel tank (salvation) and perhaps an upgraded high-performance engine (Baptism in the Spirit). However, no matter how powerful the engine is, it cannot run on yesterday’s fuel. Each journey requires a fresh supply.
When we wake up, we face a new set of temptations, a new series of decisions, and a new world of people who need to see the love of Christ. Yesterday’s grace was sufficient for yesterday’s trials, but today requires a fresh touch from Heaven.
The Command: "Keep On Being Filled"

The Apostle Paul gives us a clear directive in Ephesians 5:18: "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit."
In the original Greek language of the New Testament, the verb "be filled" is in the present imperative tense. This is significant for two reasons:
It is a command: It isn't a suggestion for "super-Christians." It is a requirement for every follower of Jesus.
It is continuous: A more literal translation would be, "Keep on being filled" or "Be being filled."
This implies that the Holy Spirit's filling is not a "once-and-for-all" reservoir that we tap into occasionally. It is a continuous flow. Just as our physical bodies require oxygen every moment to survive, our spiritual lives require the constant, active presence of the Spirit to thrive.
Scriptural Patterns: One Baptism, Many Fillings
We see this pattern throughout the Book of Acts. The disciples were famously filled with the Spirit on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:4). This was their decisive baptism into the Spirit's power. However, we see them being "filled" again and again in moments of need.
Acts 4:31: After facing threats from the religious leaders, the believers gathered to pray. The Bible says, "After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly." These were the same people from Acts 2, yet they needed a fresh infilling for a fresh challenge.
Acts 13:52: As the Gospel spread despite persecution, the scripture notes, "And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit."
These verses teach us that being "Spirit-filled" is a state of being, not just a past-tense memory. It is the secret to the "Boundless" life we talk about, a life that isn't limited by our own human strength but is animated by the very breath of God.

5 Practical Signs You Are Walking in the Spirit Today
How do you know if your morning prayer for an infilling has taken root? Walking in the Spirit isn't always about "goosebumps" or emotional highs; it shows up in the practical "9 to 5" of your life in Memphis, Cordova, or wherever you are.
Increased Sensitivity to Sin: You notice the "small" things, the sharp word, the selfish thought, or the white lie, and you feel a gentle nudge from the Spirit to course-correct immediately.
Uncommon Peace: When the traffic on I-240 is at a standstill or your boss is demanding, you find an internal "anchor" that prevents you from drifting into anxiety.
A Hunger for the Word: You find yourself wanting to read the Bible, not out of duty, but because you are genuinely hungry for God's perspective on your life.
Boldness to Witness: You see "divine appointments" instead of interruptions. You feel a nudge to pray for a coworker or share a word of encouragement with a neighbor in the 901 area.
The Fruit of the Spirit: You begin to see more love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23) manifesting in your interactions.

How to Be Filled Every Morning: A Simple Strategy
If you want to experience this daily infilling, it starts with a simple shift in your morning routine. You don't need a cathedral; you just need a heart that is open.
1. Surrender (The Empty Vessel) The Spirit cannot fill a heart that is already full of self. Start by saying, "Lord, I give You my plans, my worries, and my will today. I empty myself so You can fill me."
2. Request (The Prayer) Jesus told us that if we, being imperfect, know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more will the Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Luke 11:13).
3. Abide (The Word) Spend a few minutes in the Scriptures. The Spirit and the Word always work together. You cannot be filled with the Spirit while ignoring the Book the Spirit inspired.
Theological Term | Biblical Definition | Life Application |
Baptism in the Holy Spirit | An empowering experience distinct from salvation, for service and witness. | The "power source" for your Christian mission. |
Filling of the Holy Spirit | A repeatable, daily yielding to the Spirit's control and influence. | The "daily fuel" for your character and decisions. |
Sanctification | The ongoing process of being made holy and more like Jesus. | The "long-term growth" result of daily fillings. |
A Simple Morning Prayer for the Holy Spirit’s Filling
“Heavenly Father, I thank You for this new day. I recognize that I cannot live this day in my own strength. I ask You now, according to Your promise, to fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit. Give me wisdom for my decisions, boldness for my witness, and love for every person I encounter. I surrender my hands, my feet, my mind, and my mouth to You. Let Your Spirit flow through me like living water. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
