Bible Study: What Does the Assemblies of God Believe About the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct, post-salvation experience available to every believer, empowering them for bold witnessing and effective service. It is characterized by the initial physical evidence of speaking in other tongues, as demonstrated in the early church on the Day of Pentecost.
Understanding the "Power Surge" for Your Faith
If you’ve ever felt like your spiritual life was stuck in a routine, praying the same prayers, reading the same verses, but lacking a certain "spark", you are not alone. In the 901 area from Memphis to Cordova, many believers are searching for a deeper connection with God that feels less like a Sunday obligation and more like a daily adventure.
In the Assemblies of God, we believe that God has provided a specific gift to help every follower of Jesus live with supernatural boldness. We call it the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. It isn’t about being "better" than other Christians; it’s about having the equipment you need to fulfill the mission God has for your life.
What is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?
To understand this doctrine, we have to look at the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. Specifically, Truths #7 and #8 address this experience.
Definition: Baptism in the Holy Spirit A spiritual experience distinct from and subsequent to the New Birth (salvation), where the believer is "immersed" in the presence and power of the Holy Spirit for the purpose of witnessing and service.
Many people confuse salvation with Spirit baptism. While the Holy Spirit is certainly active in our lives from the moment we say "Yes" to Jesus, regenerating our hearts and making us new, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a separate "enduement of power" that usually happens after a person is saved.
Aspect | Salvation (The New Birth) | Baptism in the Holy Spirit |
Primary Purpose | Forgiveness of sin and eternal life | Empowerment for witness and service |
Scriptural Image | A well of water springing up (John 4:14) | Rivers of living water flowing out (John 7:38) |
Agent | The Holy Spirit (regenerates us) | Jesus Christ (the Baptizer) |
Benefit | Citizenship in Heaven | Power on Earth |

The Biblical Basis: The Promise of the Father
Jesus was very clear with His disciples. Even though they had spent three years with Him, seen Him resurrected, and were ready to tell the world about Him, He told them to wait.
In Acts 1:4-5, He commanded them: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
Why did they have to wait? Because Jesus knew that the task of reaching the nations was impossible through human strength alone. They needed "dynamis", the Greek word for power, to be the witnesses He called them to be.
Truth #7: The Baptism in the Holy Spirit
The Assemblies of God believes that all believers are entitled to, and should earnestly seek, this promise. This experience was the normal experience of the early Christian church. With it comes:
An overflowing fullness of the Spirit (John 7:37-39).
A deepened reverence for God (Acts 2:43).
An intensified consecration to God and dedication to His work (Acts 2:42).
A more active love for Christ, for His Word, and for the lost.
The Initial Physical Evidence: Speaking in Tongues
One of the most distinct beliefs of the Assemblies of God is found in Truth #8: The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
We believe that when a person is baptized in the Holy Spirit, there is a specific, observable sign: speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance. This isn't something the believer learns or "fakes"; it is a supernatural overflow of the heart.

Why Tongues?
In the book of Acts, every time the Spirit was poured out in a breakthrough way (Acts 2, Acts 10, Acts 19), speaking in tongues was the consistent physical sign.
It is a Sign: It signals that the Holy Spirit has taken full control of the "unruly" member of the body, the tongue (James 3:8).
It is for Prayer: It allows the believer to pray beyond their human understanding (1 Corinthians 14:14).
It is for Worship: It creates a pathway for deep, Spirit-led adoration of God.
It is important to distinguish between the Initial Physical Evidence (the sign of being baptized) and the Gift of Tongues mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12. While they are the same in essence, they differ in purpose. One is the entrance into the Spirit-filled life; the other is a gift used for the edification of the church body.
Why Does This Matter for Memphis?
Living in the 901, from the bustling streets of Midtown Memphis to the growing neighborhoods of Arlington and Bartlett, we face real challenges. We see families struggling, communities hurting, and a world that is often cynical about faith.
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't just a "churchy" experience to have on a Sunday morning. It is the power you need to:
Be a Witness at Work: Having the boldness to share your faith with a colleague in Cordova without fear.
Pray for the Sick: Having the confidence to lay hands on a friend in Lakeland and believe for God’s healing touch.
Find Peace in Chaos: Having a "surge of power" that keeps your heart steady when life in Shelby County feels overwhelming.

How to Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit
If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, this gift is already "on the table" for you. You don’t have to earn it, and you don’t have to be perfect to receive it. Here is how you can step into this promise:
Ask in Faith: Jesus said, "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13).
Surrender: Open your heart and your mouth. Stop trying to control the experience and allow the Holy Spirit to flow through you.
Believe the Promise: It is for you. It isn't just for pastors or "super-Christians." It is the "Promise of the Father" for every child of God.
Definition: Sanctification While Spirit Baptism provides power, sanctification is the ongoing, lifelong process of being made holy and set apart for God's use. They work together to build a strong Christian life.
Common Questions About Spirit Baptism
Is it required for salvation? No. Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone. You are a child of God the moment you repent and believe. Spirit baptism is a second gift intended to empower you for your walk as a believer.
Do I have to speak in tongues to be "Spirit-filled"? According to the biblical pattern in Acts and the AG Fundamental Truths, speaking in tongues is the initial physical evidence of the baptism. However, being "filled with the Spirit" is also an ongoing command (Ephesians 5:18) that we should walk in daily.
What if nothing happens when I pray? Don't be discouraged. God sees your heart. Sometimes the "waiting" is part of the process of surrendering our will to His. Keep seeking, keep asking, and keep your heart open.
