Bible Study: What is AG 101? A Beginner’s Guide to the Assemblies of God in Memphis

AG 101 is an introductory training and orientation program provided by the Tennessee Ministry Network. It explains the history, core doctrines (like the 16 Fundamental Truths), and organizational structure of the Assemblies of God for leaders and seekers in the Memphis area.

If you’ve lived in the 901 for a while, you know we love our traditions, from barbecue to the blues. But when you hear the term “AG 101,” your mind might jump to the local agriculture programs or even a university course. While we love our Memphis farmers, in the world of faith, AG 101 refers to something entirely different. It is a foundational pathway into understanding the Assemblies of God (AG), one of the world’s largest Pentecostal fellowships, and specifically how it operates right here in the Mid-South.

Whether you are a new believer at First Assembly Memphis, a curious neighbor in Cordova, or a digital member of Boundless Online Church, understanding our roots helps you grow deeper in your own faith journey.

Not Agriculture: Why the "AG" Matters to Memphis

The "AG" stands for the Assemblies of God. This isn't just a label; it’s a global family of believers who share a specific set of biblical convictions. In Tennessee, the Tennessee Ministry Network (our regional district) uses "AG 101" as a way to onboard new leaders, pastors, and anyone who wants to know the "why" behind what we do.

For a city like Memphis, steeped in history and spiritual heritage, having a clear theological foundation is vital. It’s what keeps our community strong, our families healthy, and our mission focused.

What Exactly Happens in AG 101?

In our region, AG 101 is often a one-day seminar or an online orientation. It’s designed to pull back the curtain on church leadership and doctrine.

1. Discovering the History

You learn about the 1914 gathering in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where the Assemblies of God was formed. For us in Memphis, this history is local. The fire of the Pentecostal movement that started at Azusa Street traveled through the South, igniting hearts in Tennessee and eventually leading to the founding of FA Memphis.

2. Understanding the "Polity"

"Polity" is just a fancy word for how a church is governed. AG 101 explains that we are a "cooperative fellowship." This means local churches like FA Memphis have the freedom to serve our city uniquely, while staying connected to a larger network for accountability, missions, and support.

3. Deep-Diving into Doctrine

This is the heart of the training. It covers the 16 Fundamental Truths. These aren't just rules; they are the biblical "North Stars" that guide everything from our Sunday worship to our local outreach in Bartlett or Arlington.

The 16 Fundamental Truths (The Simplified Version)

The Assemblies of God holds to 16 core beliefs. While that sounds like a lot to memorize, they can be grouped into four "Core Doctrines" that shape our daily lives:

Doctrine

What it Means for You

Salvation

Through Jesus alone, we find a fresh start and eternal life.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit

God gives us supernatural power to witness and live a holy life.

Divine Healing

We believe God still heals the sick and cares for our physical well-being.

The Second Coming

We live with hope because Jesus is coming back for His Church.

These truths are the engine behind why we pray for the sick at the altar in Memphis and why we provide digital community for those who are homebound through Boundless Online Church.

From Hot Springs to the 901: A Brief History

The Assemblies of God didn't just appear out of nowhere. In the early 1900s, people were hungry for a deeper experience with the Holy Spirit.

  • 1914: The AG is officially organized in Arkansas.

  • Early 1920s: Pentecostal revivals reach Tennessee.

  • The Growth: As the movement grew, congregations like First Assembly of God in Memphis emerged to serve the growing urban population of the Bluff City.

  • Today: There are dozens of AG churches throughout Shelby County, reflecting the diversity of our city, from Spanish-speaking congregations to multi-generational traditional churches.

Why Does "AG 101" Matter for You Today?

You might be thinking, "I’m not a pastor, so why do I need to know this?" The truth is, knowing what your church believes provides a "spiritual anchor." In a world that feels increasingly chaotic, having a firm grasp on biblical authority and the power of the Holy Spirit changes how you navigate your Monday through Saturday.

  • For Parents: It helps you answer your kids' questions about God with confidence.

  • For New Believers: It gives you a roadmap for spiritual growth.

  • For the Hurting: It reminds you that Divine Healing isn't just a historical event, it’s a present promise.

Local Connection vs. Global Discipleship

At First Assembly Memphis, we believe the church has two "pathways."

The Local Pathway: This is about the 901. It’s about meeting for coffee at The Good Cup, attending Wednesday night meals, and serving our neighbors in Cordova and beyond. If you are in Memphis, we invite you to experience this community in person.

The Global Pathway: We know that not everyone can make it to a building in Memphis. Whether you are traveling, homebound, or living in another state, Boundless Online Church provides a digital doorway. You get the same AG-aligned teaching, the same Spirit-filled community, and the same pastoral care, right where you are.

Takeaways for Your Week

  1. Read the Word: Pick one of the 16 Fundamental Truths this week and find the scriptures that support it.

  2. Ask Questions: If you’re at FA Memphis this Sunday, ask a member of the Connection Team about our next orientation.

  3. Stay Connected: Whether local or online, don't walk your faith journey alone.

Are you ready to take your next step in understanding the Word of God and the power of the Spirit?
