Bible Study: What Is Holy Spirit Baptism?

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience after salvation that empowers believers for life and service. In Assemblies of God theology, it is signaled by speaking in other tongues, as seen in the Book of Acts, and provides spiritual power for witnessing and ministry.
Whether you are walking the streets of downtown Memphis, commuting through Cordova, or logging in from across the globe, there is a common hunger in the heart of every believer: the desire for more of God. We often feel the call to share our faith or serve our neighbors, yet we find ourselves wondering where the strength to do so truly comes from.
In the Assemblies of God (AG) tradition, we believe that God has provided a specific gift to help us meet this need. It is called the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. This isn't just a theological term; it is a transformative encounter that equips you to live out your faith with boldness and effectiveness.
What Does the Bible Say?
The concept of Spirit Baptism isn't a modern invention. It is rooted deeply in the New Testament. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He told His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the "promise of the Father" (Luke 24:49). He told them, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8).
This promise was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2), and it continued throughout the early church. From the believers in Samaria (Acts 8) to the household of Cornelius (Acts 10) and the disciples in Ephesus (Acts 19), the pattern remained: a distinct encounter with the Holy Spirit that empowered the believer for God's work.

Why Do We Need Spirit Baptism?
Living as a Christian in the 901, or anywhere else in the world, requires more than just human effort. We face challenges in our families, stresses at work, and a world that is often hurting and confused. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is God's provision for:
Power for Witnessing: The primary purpose is to give you the courage and words to share the Gospel.
Deeper Prayer Life: It opens up new dimensions of communication with God.
Spiritual Gifts: It often serves as the gateway to the operation of spiritual gifts like healing, prophecy, and wisdom.
Holiness and Consecration: It leads to a more intense dedication to God’s work.
The Initial Physical Evidence: Tongues
One of the most frequently asked questions in our Memphis and online communities is: "How do I know if I’ve been baptized in the Spirit?"
According to the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths, the baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial physical sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance. This is the pattern we see repeatedly in the Book of Acts. While tongues is the initial sign, the lasting evidence is a life filled with the fruit of the Spirit and a passion for Christ.
Biblical Instance | Passage | Evidence Observed |
Day of Pentecost | Acts 2:4 | Speaking in tongues |
The Samaritans | Acts 8:14–17 | Something visible/audible happened |
Cornelius’ Household | Acts 10:44–46 | Speaking in tongues and praising God |
The Ephesians | Acts 19:6 | Speaking in tongues and prophesying |
Definitions You Should Know
To understand this topic clearly, it helps to define a few key terms used in our church:
Salvation: The act of being saved from sin through faith in Jesus Christ.
Spirit Baptism: A post-salvation experience of being "immersed" in the Holy Spirit for power.
Initial Physical Evidence: The first outward sign (tongues) that the baptism has occurred.
Sanctification: The lifelong process of being made holy and more like Jesus.
How to Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit
If you find yourself longing for this empowerment, you don't have to wait for a special event or travel to a specific location. You can seek this promise right where you are.
Ask in Faith: Jesus said the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Luke 11:13).
Surrender Fully: Open your heart and mind to whatever God wants to do.
Wait and Receive: Spend time in worship and prayer, expecting God to move.
Speak as the Spirit Enables: As you feel the Holy Spirit's presence, respond to His promptings.
