Bible Study: What Is Holy Spirit Baptism? A Beginner’s Guide to Pentecostal Life

Holy Spirit baptism is a distinct biblical experience following salvation where Jesus immerses a believer in the Holy Spirit, providing supernatural power for holy living and effective service. In the Assemblies of God, this is marked by the initial physical evidence of speaking in other tongues as the Spirit enables.

Ever feel like your spiritual walk is on "mute"? You love Jesus, you read the Word, and you attend church in the 901, but you sense there is a deeper reservoir of strength and connection you haven't quite tapped into yet. If you have ever felt like you are running on your own strength rather than "God-strength," you are not alone. This is exactly why Jesus promised the gift of the Holy Spirit.

At First Assembly Memphis, we believe that the Christian life was never meant to be lived in your own power. Whether you are joining us in person at our Memphis campus or connecting through Boundless Online Church from across the globe, understanding the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is the key to unlocking a life of "power for life and service."

What Is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

To understand Spirit baptism, we have to look at the "Big Picture" of the Bible. In the book of Acts, Jesus told His followers to wait in Jerusalem until they were "clothed with power from on high" (Luke 24:49). He didn't want them to start the work of the Great Commission until they had the supernatural fuel required to finish it.

In the Assemblies of God tradition, we view this as one of our 16 Fundamental Truths. It is not just a "Pentecostal thing"; it is a biblical promise for every believer.

Definition Block: Holy Spirit Baptism A supernatural experience where Jesus Christ (the Baptizer) fills a believer with the Holy Spirit to empower them for witness, service, and a deeper devotional life. It is distinct from and follows the experience of the new birth (salvation).

The Growth of a Movement: By the Numbers

The experience of Spirit baptism isn't just a historical event from 2,000 years ago; it is a global phenomenon.

  • 600 Million+: The number of Pentecostal and Charismatic believers worldwide today.

  • Fastest Growing: The Pentecostal movement is often cited as the fastest-growing religious movement in the world.

  • 35,000+: The number of believers added to the Pentecostal church globally every single day.

  • 100%: The percentage of believers who are eligible for this gift, according to the promise in Acts 2:39.

Is This Different From Salvation?

This is one of the most common questions we get at FA Memphis. Many people think that when they get saved, they get "all of the Holy Spirit," so why do they need a "baptism"?

Think of it this way: When you are born again, the Holy Spirit comes to live in you. He gives you a new heart and seals you for heaven. But in Spirit baptism, the Holy Spirit comes upon you for power. Salvation is like having a glass of water to drink; Spirit baptism is like being thrown into the middle of the ocean. Both involve water, but the experience is vastly different.

Why You Need This Empowerment:

  1. Boldness to Share: You’ll find a natural desire to tell others about Jesus in Memphis and beyond.

  2. Deeper Prayer Life: You gain the ability to pray beyond your natural vocabulary.

  3. Sensitivity to the Spirit: You begin to hear God’s "still, small voice" more clearly in your daily decisions.

  4. Victory Over Sin: The Spirit provides the "Holy" in Holy Spirit, helping you live a life that honors God.

What About Speaking in Tongues?

We know this can feel a bit "mysterious" or even intimidating for beginners. However, in the Assemblies of God, we believe the Bible provides a clear pattern. In the book of Acts, whenever people were baptized in the Spirit, there was an outward sign: they spoke in languages they hadn't learned (tongues).

This "Initial Physical Evidence" is a sign that the Spirit has taken control of the most difficult part of the human body to tame, the tongue. It is a beautiful, private prayer language that allows you to worship God from your spirit rather than just your mind. It isn't scary, and it isn't out of control. It is a gentle, powerful cooperation between you and God.

How to Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you are already a candidate for this gift. You don't have to "earn" it or be "perfect" to receive it. It is a gift! Here is a simple guide to help you seek this experience today:

  1. Ask with Expectancy: Jesus said, "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!" (Luke 11:13). Just ask!

  2. Yield Your Heart: Find a quiet place, perhaps in our sanctuary during a Sunday service or in your own living room, and focus on praising Jesus.

  3. Praise Him in Your Own Language First: As you worship, you may feel an inner prompting to speak words that don't sound like English.

  4. Step Out in Faith: The Holy Spirit will give the utterance, but you must provide the voice. Speak out the sounds the Spirit gives you.

  5. Be Patient: For some, it happens instantly. For others, it is a process of yielding. Don't be discouraged! Keep seeking.
