If you’ve spent any time in a Pentecostal church like First Assembly Memphis, you’ve probably heard the phrase "Baptism in the Holy Spirit." To some, it sounds like a mysterious "next level" of Christianity. To others, it sounds like something only meant for the apostles in the Book of Acts. But what is it, really? And why does the Assemblies of God consider it one of our most vital, life-changing doctrines?
Holy Spirit Baptism is a distinct biblical experience following salvation, where Jesus immerses a believer in the Holy Spirit to provide supernatural power for Christian living and witnessing. In Assemblies of God teaching, the initial physical evidence of this experience is speaking in other tongues as the Spirit enables.
Definition: What Is Holy Spirit Baptism?
Holy Spirit Baptism (also known as the Baptism in the Holy Spirit) is an empowerment for service and a gateway to spiritual gifts. It is not the same as being "born again" (salvation), but rather a separate, subsequent experience where the believer is "filled" or "clothed" with the power of God to live out the Great Commission.
More Than a Feeling: The Purpose of the Power
In the heart of Memphis, from the streets of Cordova to the neighborhoods of Bartlett, we know that life requires strength. We need strength to lead our families, strength to serve our city, and strength to share the hope of Jesus. This is exactly why Holy Spirit Baptism exists.
In Acts 1:8, Jesus told His followers: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Notice that Jesus didn't say, "You will receive power so you can feel good." He said you will receive power to be witnesses. Holy Spirit Baptism is primarily about empowerment for ministry. It’s the "fuel" that helps a Christian live a life that points others to Christ. Whether you are connecting with us at our physical location at FA Memphis or joining our global community through Boundless Online Church, the goal is the same: to be empowered by God to reach people.

The "Subsequent" Experience: Why It’s Distinct from Salvation
One of the most common questions we get is, "Don't I get the Holy Spirit when I get saved?"
The answer is yes. You cannot be a Christian without the Holy Spirit. He is the one who convicts us of sin, leads us to repentance, and "seals" us for the day of redemption. When you say "Yes" to Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within you.
However, the Assemblies of God (and the New Testament) points to a second experience. Think of it like this:
Salvation is like having a well of water inside you that gives you life (John 4:14).
Holy Spirit Baptism is like that well becoming a "river of living water" that flows out of you to impact others (John 7:38-39).
In the Book of Acts, we see people who were already believers, who already loved Jesus, being specifically prayed for so they could receive this baptism. It happened on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2), it happened to the believers in Samaria (Acts 8), and it happened to the disciples in Ephesus (Acts 19). It was the "normal" experience for the early church, and we believe it is still the normal, intended experience for every believer in the 901 and across the globe today.
What About Speaking in Tongues?
This is often where the most curiosity (and sometimes confusion) lies. The Assemblies of God teaches that the initial physical evidence of being baptized in the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues.
Why "initial"? Because it’s the first outward sign. Why "physical"? Because it’s something you can actually hear.
In Acts 2:4, it says: "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them." This pattern repeats throughout the New Testament. While the Holy Spirit brings many fruits (like love, joy, and peace) and many gifts (like healing and prophecy), tongues serves as the unique sign that the "infilling" has taken place.
It isn't a "secret code" or a requirement for heaven; it’s a gift. It’s a spiritual language that allows you to pray from your spirit directly to God, bypassing the limitations of your human vocabulary. It builds you up and humbles you at the same time, reminding you that God’s power is greater than your own.

Practical Takeaways: Why You Should Seek the Baptism
If you are looking for a church in Memphis or seeking a deeper connection online, you might wonder how this practically changes your Tuesday morning or your Friday night. Here is what Holy Spirit Baptism provides:
Boldness: You’ll find a new courage to talk about your faith with coworkers, friends, and family.
Sensitivity: You become more aware of the Holy Spirit’s prompting, when to pray for someone, when to speak, and when to listen.
Deepened Worship: Many believers find that their prayer life and worship experience go from "routine" to "vibrant" after being spirit-filled.
Spiritual Gifts: This baptism is the "doorway" to the gifts mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12, such as wisdom, faith, and divine healing.
Victory Over Sin: While it doesn’t make you perfect, the Spirit’s power gives you an "extra gear" to overcome habits and temptations that used to hold you back.
Topic | Key Verse | Message |
Promise | Luke 24:49 | Wait for the "Promise of the Father." |
Power | Acts 1:8 | Receive power to be a witness. |
Evidence | Acts 2:4 | Speaking in tongues as the Spirit enables. |
Availability | Acts 2:39 | The promise is for you and your children. |
How Can I Receive Holy Spirit Baptism?
God is not "hiding" this gift from you. It isn't reserved for pastors or "super-Christians." It is for every child of God who asks. Here is how you can step into this experience:
Check Your Foundation: Ensure you have a personal relationship with Jesus. Salvation is the prerequisite.
Develop a Hunger: Ask God to give you a desire for everything He has for you.
Just Ask: Jesus said, "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13).
Receive by Faith: Don't try to "work it up" or force it. Just as you received salvation by faith, receive the Spirit's filling by faith.
Yield to the Spirit: As you pray, if you feel the prompting to speak words that aren't in English, step out in faith and speak them. The Holy Spirit provides the "utterance," but you provide the voice.
