Have you ever felt like you were driving in the wrong direction, but the further you went, the harder it felt to turn around? Life can feel that way sometimes, heavy with mistakes, weighed down by "if onlys," and clouded by the feeling that a clean slate is impossible. But what if the "turn" itself was the secret to the peace you've been searching for?
What is repentance, and why does it matter?
Repentance is a conscious change of mind that leads to a radical change of direction, turning away from sin and toward God’s love. It is the essential doorway to salvation, allowing us to leave the past behind and receive a fresh start through the grace of Jesus Christ.
Understanding the Heart of the Turn
In our modern culture, the word "repentance" often gets a bad rap. We might picture someone shouting on a street corner or feel a heavy weight of shame and religious "shoulds." But in the Bible, repentance is one of the most beautiful, hope-filled words in the human language. It isn't a threat; it’s an invitation.
At its core, repentance is the response to a simple realization: I am going the wrong way.
In the Assemblies of God Fundamental Truth #5 (“The Salvation of Man”), we believe that man’s only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. This salvation is received through two simultaneous actions: repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. You cannot have one without the other. Faith is the hand that reaches out to God; repentance is the decision to let go of the things that were keeping you from Him.
Definition Block: Repentance
Repentance (from the Greek metanoia): A fundamental change of mind, heart, and will. It is the act of turning away from sin, self-sufficiency, and rebellion, and turning toward God in trust and obedience. It is not just feeling sorry for sin; it is a change of direction.

More Than Just Guilt: Returning to the Father
One of the greatest misconceptions about repentance is that it is fueled by shame. While we do feel a "godly sorrow" for our sins, the goal of repentance isn't to make us feel bad, it’s to make us whole.
Think of the story of the Prodigal Son. He didn't just sit in the pigpen feeling guilty. The Bible says he "came to himself" (a change of mind) and then he "arose and went to his father" (a change of direction). Repentance is the moment you stop looking at the pigpen and start looking toward home.
Why Repentance is the Key to Your Fresh Start
Without repentance, we are trying to build a new life on an old foundation of old habits and old directions. Repentance clears the ground.
Aspect of Repentance | What It Is NOT | What It IS |
The Mind | Just a new thought | A new perspective on God and sin |
The Emotions | Only crying or feeling bad | A sincere sorrow that leads to change |
The Will | Making a temporary resolution | A permanent decision to follow Jesus |
The Result | Trying harder to be "good" | Being made new by God's grace |
As the scripture says in Acts 3:19: "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord." Notice the order: Repent, be converted, and then comes the refreshing. If you are feeling spiritually parched, the refreshing you need is found on the other side of the turn.

The Urgency of the Invitation
While repentance is an invitation to grace, it is also a vital necessity. In Luke 13:3, Jesus is direct: "I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish."
This sounds like a hard saying, but it is actually the ultimate act of love. If a doctor sees a patient heading toward a cliff, the most loving thing they can do is warn them to stop and turn around. Jesus knows that life lived apart from God leads to brokenness, isolation, and ultimately, eternal separation. He calls us to repent because He wants us to live.
How to Take the First Step Today
If you are looking for spiritual renewal or a second chance, you don't have to wait until you have "fixed" yourself to come to God. In fact, you can't fix yourself. Repentance is simply bringing your brokenness to the One who can.
Acknowledge the Need: Be honest with God. Admit that the direction you’ve been heading isn't working.
Agree with God: Acknowledge that sin is real and that it separates us from His best for our lives.
Turn Your Eyes: Shift your focus from your mistakes to the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
Accept the Grace: Believe that because of Jesus, you are forgiven, justified, and made an heir to eternal life.

A Community for the Journey
At First Assembly Memphis, we believe that the Christian life is a series of "turns" toward God. Whether you are stepping into a relationship with Jesus for the very first time or you are a long-time believer who needs to return to your "first love," you are not alone.
Our local Memphis community is filled with people who have experienced the transformative power of repentance. We aren't a museum of perfect people; we are a family of those who have been forgiven. If you're in the 901 area, from Cordova to Arlington, we invite you to join us this Sunday as we seek the "times of refreshing" that only come from God's presence.
If you are joining us through Boundless Online Church, know that distance is no barrier to God's grace. You can start your fresh start right where you are, in whatever room or country you find yourself in.

Are you ready to turn?
The beauty of the Gospel is that no matter how far you've traveled in the wrong direction, the turn back to God is only one prayer away. He isn't waiting with a scowl; He is waiting with open arms, ready to give you the fresh start you’ve been longing for.
