Sin is essentially "missing the mark" of God’s perfect standard for our lives. It is any thought, word, or action that falls short of His glory or rebels against His commands. However, the story doesn't end there; through Jesus Christ, God offers grace, an unmerited gift of forgiveness and restoration.
Have you ever felt like you were running a race but couldn't quite find the finish line? Or perhaps you’ve looked at your life and realized that despite your best efforts, something feels "off" or disconnected? In the Assemblies of God (AG) tradition, we believe these feelings often point to a universal human reality: sin.
Understanding sin isn't about feeling weighed down by shame. Instead, it’s about identifying the problem so we can embrace the most beautiful solution ever offered: the grace of God. Whether you are joining us from the 901 area code in Memphis or connecting through our global community at Boundless Online Church, this guide is designed to help you navigate these foundational truths with clarity and hope.
What Exactly Is Sin?
In a world where "right" and "wrong" often feel like moving targets, the Bible provides a steady anchor. The Greek word often used for sin in the New Testament is hamartia, which literally means "to miss the mark." Imagine an archer aiming for a bullseye; sin is when the arrow veers off course, no matter how slightly.

But sin is more than just a mistake. It is often described in three ways:
Rebellion: Choosing our way over God’s way.
Lawlessness: Breaking the moral laws God has set for our protection and flourishing.
Independence: Trying to live life apart from the Creator who designed us.
Key Definition Blocks
Sin: The universal condition of humanity falling short of God's moral perfection. It is both an inherited nature from the Fall of Man and a personal choice to disobey God. Grace: God’s "unmerited favor." It is receiving the goodness and forgiveness of God that we could never earn or deserve through our own efforts. Redemption: The act of being "bought back." Through His death on the cross, Jesus paid the price for our sins, purchasing our freedom from the power of death.
The Story of the "Fall"
The Assemblies of God teaches that God created humanity good and upright. In the very beginning, we were designed for perfect fellowship with Him. However, through a deliberate choice, humanity turned away from God’s command. This event, known as "The Fall," introduced sin into the world, affecting every person born thereafter.
As the Pastor for Boundless Online outreach often says, "You may as well try to swim from California to Japan as try to get to heaven on your own." Because of the Fall, we cannot bridge the gap between ourselves and a Holy God through good deeds, technology, or intelligence. We need a Savior.
The Two Sides of the Gospel
The Gospel (which means "Good News") is like a coin with two sides. On one side, there is the reality of God’s holiness and justice, He cannot simply overlook sin because He is perfectly just. On the other side, there is His overwhelming love and mercy.
At First Assembly Memphis, we often highlight how these two sides meet at the Cross. Jesus took the justice we deserved so we could receive the love He possessed.
Topic | Key Scripture | The Message for You |
The Problem | Romans 3:23 | "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." No one is excluded. |
The Penalty | Romans 6:23 | "The wages of sin is death." Sin leads to spiritual separation from God. |
The Gift | Ephesians 2:8-9 | "For by grace you have been saved through faith." It is a gift, not a reward for works. |
The Way | John 14:6 | "I am the way, the truth, and the life." Jesus is the only bridge to the Father. |
The Promise | 1 John 1:9 | "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us." Restoration is always available. |
How Do We Respond? (The ABCs of Salvation)
If sin is the problem, and Jesus is the solution, how do we step into that reality? In our AG 101 foundations, we keep it simple:
A - Admit: Acknowledge that there is sin in your life and that you cannot save yourself. This is called repentance, a change of mind that leads to a change of direction.
B - Believe: Trust that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died for your sins, and that He rose again.
C - Confess: Declare Jesus as the Lord (the leader) of your life.

Life After "Yes": The Journey of Sanctification
One of the most common misconceptions is that once you are "saved," you have to be perfect. That couldn't be further from the truth. In the Assemblies of God, we believe in sanctification, a lifelong process of being set apart for God and becoming more like Jesus every day.
Think of it like this: If salvation is the "moment" you enter the house, sanctification is the process of God helping you clean up the rooms. Sometimes we trip. Sometimes we still "miss the mark." But because of grace, we have what we call the "Christian’s bar of soap": 1 John 1:9. We confess, we receive cleansing, and we keep walking.
From Memphis to the Nations
Whether you’re driving down I-40 in Memphis or watching a stream from halfway across the world, the message remains the same: God is for you. At First Assembly Memphis, we are a family that believes in the power of a fresh start. We don't care where you've been; we care where you are going.
For those in our local 901 community, from Cordova and Bartlett to Germantown and Arlington, we invite you to experience this grace in person. There is something powerful about sitting in a room with people who are all "works in progress" but are anchored in the same hope.
For our global family at Boundless Online Church, you are not a spectator. You are part of a digital Acts 2 community where discipleship and connection happen regardless of geography.
