In the Assemblies of God, Spirit Baptism is a special experience following salvation where Jesus fills a believer with the Holy Spirit to provide extra power for godly living and witnessing. It is distinct from the new birth and is initially evidenced by speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.
Have you ever felt like your spiritual life needed a "power surge"? Maybe you’ve been following Jesus for years, or perhaps you’re brand new to the faith here in the Memphis area, but you feel like there’s a missing gear in your daily walk. You want more boldness to talk about your faith at work, more wisdom to lead your family in Bartlett or Cordova, and a deeper connection to God during your morning commute.
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we believe that "more" is exactly what God promised. We call it the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. It isn't a badge of "super-spirituality" or a requirement to get into heaven, it’s a gift of empowerment meant for every single believer, from the youngest child in Arlington to the retiree in Germantown.
Bible 101: Defining the Experience
To understand Spirit Baptism, we first have to clear up some common confusion. In many church circles, the terms "saved," "baptized," and "filled" are used interchangeably. However, the Bible paints a more layered picture of our relationship with the Holy Spirit.
Definition: Baptism in the Holy Spirit An experience distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth (salvation). It is an enduement of power for life and service, and the bestowment of the gifts and their uses in the work of the ministry.
When you say "yes" to Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes into your life to regenerate your heart. You are a child of God, and you have the Spirit! But Spirit Baptism is an overflowing of that presence. Think of it like a glass of water. Salvation is having water in the glass; Spirit Baptism is the faucet being turned on so high that the water spills over the sides and soaks everything around it.

Is This Really in the Bible?
Many people ask if this "Pentecostal" experience is just a modern invention. When we look at the book of Acts, we see a consistent pattern of believers receiving a specific, powerful encounter with the Spirit after they already believed in Jesus.
The Day of Pentecost (Acts 2): The followers of Jesus were already disciples. They had seen the resurrected Christ! Yet, Jesus told them to wait in Jerusalem until they were "clothed with power from on high." When the Spirit fell, they spoke in tongues and were immediately transformed from fearful hiders into bold witnesses.
The Samaritans (Acts 8): Philip preached the Gospel in Samaria, and many people believed and were baptized in water. They were clearly saved. But the Bible says that Peter and John came from Jerusalem specifically so they could pray for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit, because the Spirit "had not yet come on any of them."
Saul of Tarsus (Acts 9): Saul (later Paul) encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus and called Him "Lord." Three days later, a man named Ananias prayed for him to be "filled with the Holy Spirit."
The Ephesians (Acts 19): Paul met a group of believers and asked a very direct question: "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" When they said no, he prayed for them, and they received the Spirit and spoke in tongues.
This pattern shows us that while we receive the Spirit at salvation, there is a second, empowering work of grace available to us.
Why Do Families in the 901 Need This Power?
Life in Shelby County, whether you're navigating the school systems in Arlington or the busy streets of Memphis, comes with its own set of pressures. Families today are facing unprecedented challenges in culture, mental health, and spiritual distractions.
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't just about what happens inside a church building on Sunday morning. It’s about the "more" that the Pastor for Boundless Online outreach often speaks about:
More Boldness: The power to stand up for your values at school or in the workplace without fear.
More Wisdom: Supernatural insight for parents as they navigate the unique needs of their children.
More Joy: A deep-seated peace that remains even when the news cycle is chaotic or local life feels heavy.
More Effective Prayer: A "prayer language" (tongues) that allows you to pray when you simply don't have the English words to express the burden on your heart.

Comparing the "Baptisms"
It can be helpful to see how these different spiritual milestones work together. None are "better" than the others; they are all part of the beautiful journey of a Christ-follower.
Experience | Who Does It? | What Is the Result? | Biblical Reference |
Salvation | The Holy Spirit | New Life & Forgiveness | John 3:3-5 |
Water Baptism | A Minister/Believer | Public Declaration of Faith | Matthew 28:19 |
Spirit Baptism | Jesus Christ | Power for Witnessing | Acts 1:8 |
The "Initial Evidence": Speaking in Tongues
A distinct feature of the Assemblies of God is our belief in the "Initial Physical Evidence." We believe that when someone is baptized in the Holy Spirit for the first time, they will speak in other tongues as the Spirit gives them the words.
This isn't something a person learns or mimics; it is a supernatural overflow of the Spirit through the person's voice. While tongues are the first sign, the lasting evidence is a life changed by power, more love for God’s Word, more passion for the lost, and a more vibrant prayer life.

How to Seek Spirit Baptism as a Family
If you are a follower of Jesus and you find yourself wanting this "more," the good news is that Jesus is the one who baptizes. You don't have to earn it, and you don't have to be "perfect" first. Here is how you can seek this gift together as a family in Bartlett, Cordova, or wherever you call home:
Ask with Expectancy: Jesus said, "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13). Simply ask Him.
Focus on Jesus: Spirit Baptism isn't an end in itself; it’s about getting closer to Jesus. Spend time in worship, thanking Him for who He is.
Yield Your Voice: The Holy Spirit doesn't "force" anyone to speak. He prompts, and we cooperate. As you feel His presence moving in your heart during prayer, begin to praise Him with sounds and words that He gives you, even if they aren't in your native language.
Create a Culture of Prayer at Home: Encourage your kids that the Holy Spirit is for them, too! Many of our children at FA Memphis and in our online community have experienced the power of the Spirit in their own bedrooms or during family devotions.
