Bible Study: What Is Spirit Baptism? AG 101: A Beginner’s Guide for the Spiritually Curious in Memphis

Spirit Baptism is a distinct spiritual experience following salvation where Jesus Christ immerses a believer in the Holy Spirit. In the Assemblies of God, this "enduement of power" is evidenced by speaking in tongues and provides believers with supernatural strength for witnessing, holy living, and service.

Finding Power in the 901

If you have ever sat on your porch in Cordova on a quiet Friday night or walked through the bustling streets of Midtown Memphis, you might have felt a tug in your soul, a sense that there is "more" to the Christian life than just attending a service.

Maybe you’ve read the Book of Acts and wondered why the early church seemed so vibrant, so bold, and so... powerful. At First Assembly Memphis, we believe that the same power available to the apostles in Jerusalem is available to you right here in the 901. This experience is what we call the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

What Is Spirit Baptism? (The AG 101 Definition)

To understand Spirit Baptism, we have to look at the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths. This isn't just "church jargon"; it’s the biblical foundation for everything we do.

Definition Block: Spirit Baptism The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an experience distinct from and following the new birth (salvation). It is the "promise of the Father" that empowers believers for Christian witness and ministry, as seen in the early Church (Acts 1:8, 2:4).

For many, the idea of "baptism" only brings to mind water. While water baptism is a beautiful public declaration of faith, Spirit Baptism is an internal "immersion." Think of it this way: salvation is like getting into the boat; Spirit Baptism is like the wind filling the sails.

Why Do We Talk About Speaking in Tongues?

One of the most common questions we hear in Memphis, and from our global family at Boundless Online Church, is: "Do I have to speak in tongues?"

In the Assemblies of God, we believe in the Initial Physical Evidence. This means that when a person is baptized in the Holy Spirit, the first outward sign is speaking in a language they haven't learned (tongues), as the Spirit gives them utterance (Acts 2:4).

It isn't about being "weird" or "better" than anyone else. It is a sign of complete surrender. When we allow the Holy Spirit to control even our speech, it signifies that He has full access to our lives. This gift isn't a one-time event; it's a doorway into a deeper prayer life and a greater sensitivity to God's voice.

5 Reasons Spirit Baptism Changes Your Daily Life

Whether you’re navigating a stressful job in East Memphis or raising a family in Bartlett, Spirit Baptism offers practical help for your everyday walk:

  1. Supernatural Boldness: Like Peter, who went from denying Jesus to preaching to thousands, you receive a new confidence to share your faith.

  2. Sensitivity to the Spirit: You begin to notice "nudges" from God, knowing when to call a friend or when to pray for someone in the grocery store.

  3. Deepened Worship: Your prayer life moves from a duty to a delight. Many find that "praying in the Spirit" helps them communicate with God when words fail.

  4. Power Over Sin: While we all struggle, the Spirit provides the strength to live a life that honors God (sanctification).

  5. Access to Spiritual Gifts: From wisdom to healing, the Spirit equips you with specific "tools" to help others.

How Can I Receive Spirit Baptism?

If you are spiritually curious and hungry for more of God, the good news is that this gift is for you. Peter promised in Acts 2:39: "The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord our God will call."

Here is how you can seek this experience tonight:

  • Check Your Foundation: Ensure you have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

  • Cultivate Hunger: Ask God to give you a desire for everything He has for you.

  • Simply Ask: In Luke 11:13, Jesus says the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.

  • Receive by Faith: You don't have to "earn" it. It is a gift.

  • Yield Your Speech: As you feel the Spirit moving, begin to praise God. If words you don't recognize come to your mind, speak them out in faith.

Common Misconceptions

"Is it only for 'super-Christians'?" No. It was the "normal" experience for everyday fishermen, tax collectors, and tentmakers in the New Testament. It’s for every believer today.

"Is it scary or out of control?" Not at all. The Holy Spirit is a gentleman. He doesn't force Himself on you. It is a cooperation between you and God.

"Do I need to be in a church building?" While many receive the Spirit during a service at First Assembly Memphis, you can receive it in your living room, your car, or while watching our online church community from across the world.

A Reflection for Your Evening

As you wind down your day, take a moment to breathe. God isn't looking for perfection; He is looking for a "yes." Whether you are in the heart of Memphis or joining us from another continent, the Holy Spirit is as close as your next breath.

Are you ready to experience the "more" that God has promised?
