The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct, post-salvation experience where Jesus immerses a believer in the Spirit to provide power for witnessing and holy living. It is characterized by an "enduement of power" and is initially evidenced by speaking in other tongues as the Holy Spirit enables.
If you have ever felt like your spiritual life needed a "power surge," you are not alone. Across the globe, over 700 million Christians identify as Pentecostal, experiencing a dimension of faith that goes beyond initial belief. At First Assembly Memphis and through our Boundless Online Church community, we believe this experience isn’t just a historical event from the Book of Acts, it is a promise for you today.
Understanding the "More" of God
When we talk about the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, the keyword is more. More joy, more boldness to share your faith, and a deeper ability to pray when words fail. While every believer receives the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation (regeneration), the Baptism in the Spirit is a separate, additional work of God designed to equip you for the mission of the Gospel.
Definition: Baptism in the Holy Spirit A spiritual experience distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth. It provides the believer with power for life and service, the bestowment of spiritual gifts, and a deeper reverence for God.
A Biblical Experience for Everyone
The Assemblies of God (AG) foundation is built upon the "16 Fundamental Truths," and the Baptism in the Spirit is one of our four core doctrines. We see this pattern throughout the New Testament. It wasn't just for the apostles; it was intended for "all flesh" (Joel 2:28).

In the Book of Acts, we see several instances where people believed in Jesus but were later baptized in the Spirit:
The Day of Pentecost (Acts 2): The 120 gathered in the Upper Room were filled and spoke in tongues.
The Samaritans (Acts 8): They had accepted the Word of God and were baptized in water, but Peter and John had to pray for them to receive the Holy Spirit.
The Ephesians (Acts 19): Paul asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit since you believed?" This question highlights that it is a common and vital follow-up to salvation.
The Initial Physical Evidence: Speaking in Tongues
One of the most frequent questions we receive at FA Memphis is: "How do I know if I’ve been baptized in the Spirit?"
Following the biblical pattern found in Acts 2:4, Acts 10:44-46, and Acts 19:6, the Assemblies of God teaches that the initial physical evidence of this baptism is speaking in other tongues. This isn't a learned language, but a spiritual one given by the Spirit.
Think of it as the "overflow" of a heart so full of God's presence that human language is no longer sufficient to express praise. While tongues are the initial sign, the long-term evidence is a changed life, characterized by the Fruit of the Spirit and a passion for God's Word.
Why Do We Need the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?
Jesus told His disciples in Acts 1:8, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses..."
The primary purpose is empowerment for service. Just as an engine needs a surge of power to climb a steep hill, a Christian needs the Spirit's power to navigate a difficult world. This baptism helps us:
Witness with Boldness: Overcoming the fear of sharing the Gospel with friends and coworkers.
Pray More Effectively: The Spirit helps us pray according to God's will (Romans 8:26).
Live a Holy Life: It strengthens our walk of sanctification.
Definition: Sanctification The act of separation from that which is evil, and of dedication unto God. It is a lifelong process of being made more like Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.

How Can I Receive the Baptism in the Spirit?
If you are a follower of Jesus, this gift is already yours for the taking. It is not something you earn; it is a gift you receive by faith.
Ask: Jesus said the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Luke 11:13).
Believe: Approach God with the expectation that He wants to fill you.
Yield: Spend time in worship and prayer, allowing the Spirit to move. Don't be afraid of the "newness" of the experience.
