Bible Study: What Is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience after salvation that empowers believers for Christian life and service. It provides spiritual power to be an effective witness for Jesus and is initially evidenced by speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.

Beyond the Basics: The Anointing for the 901

If you have ever felt like your spiritual life was "missing a gear," or if you have struggled to find the boldness to share your faith in the middle of a busy Memphis work week, you are not alone. Many followers of Jesus in the 901 area feel a deep hunger for more, more power, more presence, and more purpose.

At First Assembly Memphis, we believe that God didn’t just save us to leave us to our own devices. He promised an "enduement of power" to help us navigate life’s challenges and reach our city with the love of Christ. This empowerment is what we call the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. It isn’t just a theological term for a textbook; it is a life-altering encounter available to every believer today.

AG 101: What Does the Bible Actually Say?

The Assemblies of God (AG) holds the Baptism in the Holy Spirit as one of its four "Cardinal Doctrines." This means it is central to who we are as a Pentecostal family. We base this on the pattern seen in the book of Acts.

In Acts 1:4-5, Jesus told His disciples not to leave Jerusalem but to "wait for the gift my Father promised." He clarified that while John baptized with water, they would soon be "baptized with the Holy Spirit."

Why did they need it? They were already followers of Jesus. They had seen the resurrected Christ! Yet, Jesus knew they needed a specific kind of spiritual "fuel" to take the Gospel from a small room in Jerusalem to the ends of the earth.

Definition Block: Understanding the Terms

To help clarify the conversation, here are three quick definitions of terms you might hear at FA Memphis or in our online community:

  • Baptism in the Holy Spirit: A post-salvation experience where Jesus fills a believer with the Holy Spirit to empower them for ministry and holy living.

  • Glossolalia: The Greek-derived term for "speaking in tongues." It refers to speaking in a language unknown to the speaker as enabled by the Spirit.

  • Initial Physical Evidence: The outward sign (tongues) that confirms the inward work of Spirit baptism has taken place.

Is Spirit Baptism the Same as Salvation?

This is one of the most common questions we get from people in Cordova, Bartlett, and beyond. In the Assemblies of God, we believe these are two distinct works of God:

  1. Salvation (The New Birth): When you repent and trust in Jesus, the Holy Spirit regenerates your heart. You are a child of God, and the Spirit dwells within you. You are saved, and you are headed for heaven!

  2. Baptism in the Holy Spirit (The Empowering): This is an additional experience where the Spirit "comes upon" the believer. Think of salvation as having a well of water inside you for your own life, while Spirit baptism is like an overflowing river that reaches others (John 7:37-39).

You don't need Spirit baptism to be saved, but you definitely need it to be fully equipped for the mission God has for you in Memphis.

Why Do We Emphasize "Tongues"?

For some, the idea of speaking in tongues feels mysterious or even intimidating. However, in the book of Acts, tongues served as a clear, objective sign that the "Promise of the Father" had arrived.

When the Holy Spirit fell on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2), on Cornelius’s household (Acts 10), and on the disciples at Ephesus (Acts 19), speaking in tongues was the recurring evidence. It serves as a personal "prayer language" that builds up the believer’s spirit and allows them to communicate with God beyond the limits of their natural understanding.

5 Reasons Spirit Baptism Matters for Your Life in Memphis

Living in the 901 comes with its own set of stresses, traffic on I-40, the heat of a Memphis summer, and the spiritual weight of a city that needs hope. Here is how this experience practically changes your walk:

  1. Boldness in Witnessing: You’ll find a new "want-to" and "ability-to" share Jesus with coworkers or neighbors in Collierville or Midtown.

  2. Deepened Prayer Life: When you don't know how to pray about a situation, the Spirit intercedes through you.

  3. Power Over Sin: It provides a "spiritual surge" to help you walk in sanctification and victory.

  4. Sensitivity to the Spirit: You become more aware of God’s "nudges" throughout your day.

  5. Spiritual Gifts: It opens the door to the gifts of the Spirit (healing, prophecy, wisdom) used to serve the church.

How to Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, this gift is already yours for the taking. God isn't "holding out" on you; He is waiting for you to ask.

  • Check Your Heart: Ensure you have surrendered your life to Jesus.

  • Ask in Faith: Luke 11:13 says, "If you then... know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

  • Yield Your Tongue: As you pray, you might feel the urge to speak sounds that aren't English. Step out in faith and cooperate with the Spirit. You do the speaking; He provides the language.

  • Wait with Expectation: Sometimes it happens instantly; sometimes it happens during a time of waiting and worship.

Insight: A Pattern for Every Neighborhood

Statistical data from Pentecostal history shows that when a community is empowered by the Spirit, local outreach and service projects tend to increase. This isn't just about "feeling good" in a church service; it’s about having the strength to feed the hungry in Shelby County and the compassion to mentor at-risk youth in our local schools. The Spirit's power is always outward-focused.

Takeaway: You Are Called and Equipped

You were not meant to live the Christian life on your own strength. Whether you are a stay-at-home parent in Arlington, a student in the University of Memphis area, or a retiree in Germantown, God wants to clothe you with power from on high. This "AG 101" truth is a doorway to a more vibrant, effective, and joyful life in Christ.

Are you ready to experience the "more" that God has promised for your journey?
