Bible Study: What Is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct, empowering experience for believers that occurs after salvation, providing spiritual power for witness and service. According to the Bible, the initial physical evidence of this baptism is speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.

Whether you are walking into our physical home at First Assembly Memphis or joining our global family through Boundless Online Church, you have likely heard us talk about the "Spirit-filled life." If you are new to the Pentecostal tradition or the Assemblies of God, this phrase can feel a bit mysterious. You might wonder, "Is this for everyone? Why do I need it? And what exactly is it?"

At FA Memphis, we believe the Baptism in the Holy Spirit isn’t just a theological term, it is a life-altering promise from God designed to help you live with boldness, peace, and purpose in the 901 and across the globe.

Understanding the Basics: AG 101 Definition Blocks

Before we dive into the scriptures, let’s define a few core terms. These help us stay biblically grounded as we explore the work of the Holy Spirit.

Term

Biblical Definition

Salvation

The work of God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ, where a person is born again, forgiven of sin, and restored to relationship with God.

Sanctification

The lifelong process of being set apart for God and becoming more like Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit

An experience distinct from salvation that empowers the believer with "power from on high" for Christian life and witness.

Initial Physical Evidence

The outward sign of speaking in tongues, which serves as the biblical pattern for those receiving the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

The Promise of the Father

Jesus didn't want His followers to try to change the world on their own strength. In fact, right before He ascended to heaven, He gave them a specific instruction: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised" (Acts 1:4).

He told them that while John baptized with water, they would soon be "baptized with the Holy Spirit." Why? Because they needed "power when the Holy Spirit comes on you" to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).

For us in Memphis, Bartlett, Cordova, and Arlington, that "ends of the earth" includes our neighborhoods, our workplaces, and our digital communities. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is God's way of equipping you for the mission He has placed on your life.

Is Spirit Baptism the Same as Salvation?

This is one of the most common questions we receive at Boundless Online Church. In the Assemblies of God, we believe, based on the pattern of the New Testament, that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is distinct from and subsequent to the experience of salvation.

Think of it this way:

  • Salvation is the well of water within you, springing up to eternal life (John 4:14). It is about your relationship with God.

  • Spirit Baptism is the "rivers of living water" flowing out of you (John 7:38-39). It is about your mission to the world.

We see this pattern throughout the Book of Acts. For example, in Acts 8, the people of Samaria had already believed and been baptized in water, yet the apostles Peter and John traveled there specifically so that the new believers might receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:14-17). Their salvation was secure, but they were missing the "enduement of power" that comes with the Spirit's baptism.

The Significance of Tongues

As a Pentecostal church, we hold to the biblical truth that speaking in tongues is the initial physical evidence of this baptism. We see this repeated in the scriptures:

  1. Acts 2:4 (The Day of Pentecost): "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."

  2. Acts 10:44-46 (Cornelius’ House): Even the Gentiles received the gift, and the believers were "astonished... for they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God."

  3. Acts 19:6 (The Ephesians): "When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied."

Why tongues? While we don't fully know why God chose this specific sign, we know that the tongue is one of the hardest parts of the human body to surrender (James 3). When we speak in a language we haven't learned, it is a powerful sign that we have fully yielded our spirits to the Holy Spirit's control.

It is important to note that the initial sign of tongues is the same in essence as the spiritual gift of tongues mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12, but different in purpose. The initial sign is for personal confirmation; the gift is for the edification of the church body.

Why Should I Seek the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

You might think, "I love Jesus, I go to church, and I try to be a good person. Is this really necessary?"

Spirit baptism isn't about being "better" than other Christians; it’s about being empowered. Here are four practical reasons to seek this gift:

  1. Boldness in Witness: In the 901, it can sometimes be intimidating to share your faith. The Holy Spirit gives you a supernatural boldness to speak the truth in love.

  2. A Deeper Prayer Life: Sometimes, we don't know how to pray as we ought. The Spirit intercedes for us through wordless groans and spiritual languages (Romans 8:26).

  3. Sensitivity to the Spirit: You become more aware of God’s leading in your daily life, at the grocery store, in your parenting, or while chatting with a friend online.

  4. Power for Holiness: While the Spirit doesn't make us perfect overnight, He provides the strength to walk in sanctification and resist the pull of sin.

How to Receive the Gift

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, this promise is for you. There is no "perfect" way to receive, but there is a biblical way to seek:

  • Ask: "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13).

  • Believe: Approach God with faith, knowing that He wants to empower you.

  • Yield: Spend time in worship and prayer. Be willing to let go of control and allow the Holy Spirit to move through you.

Many people receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit during a Sunday service at FA Memphis, while others receive it in their living rooms while watching Boundless Online Church. God is not limited by geography.
