Bible Study: What Is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit? AG 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Understanding God’s Power

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct, post-salvation experience that empowers believers with spiritual strength for bold witnessing and godly living. It is often accompanied by the initial physical sign of speaking in tongues as the Spirit enables the believer to speak.

In the early church, this wasn't an optional "extra" for the super-spiritual. It was the normal, expected experience for every follower of Jesus. From the streets of Jerusalem to the neighborhoods of Memphis and the digital reaching of Boundless Online Church, this power is still available to you today.

Understanding the Basics: A Definition Block

To understand this AG (Assemblies of God) core doctrine, we need to define a few key terms. These help us see where this experience fits into our walk with God.

Term

Definition

Justification

The act of God where He declares a sinner righteous through faith in Jesus Christ alone. It is your "legal" standing of being right with God.

Sanctification

The ongoing process of being set apart for God’s work and becoming more like Jesus in character and action.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit

A distinct experience after salvation that provides "enduement of power" for life and service.

Initial Physical Evidence

The first outward, observable sign (speaking in tongues) that confirms a believer has received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

The Power Surge: Why Do We Need It?

Imagine you are driving down a two-lane road in Shelby County, stuck behind a slow-moving 18-wheeler. You see a break in traffic and pull out to pass. You "put the pedal to the metal," and suddenly, the engine surges. That bolt of power that moves the car forward is a great picture of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

You already had an engine. You were already moving. But this is a power surge.

The Pastor for Boundless Online outreach often describes this as the "more" of God. We all have the Holy Spirit when we are saved, you can’t belong to Christ without Him! But the Baptism is about a specific overflowing of that presence for the purpose of mission.

What Does the Bible Actually Say?

The Assemblies of God bases this teaching on the pattern found in the Book of Acts. We believe the Bible isn't just a history book; it's a blueprint.

  1. The Promise (Acts 1:8): Jesus told His disciples, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

  2. The Fulfillment (Acts 2:4): On the Day of Pentecost, the 120 believers gathered in the upper room. "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."

  3. The Pattern (Acts 19:1-6): Years later, the Apostle Paul met believers in Ephesus and asked a vital question: "Did you receive the Holy Spirit since you believed?" When he laid hands on them, they were filled and spoke in tongues.

Verified Statistic: Did you know that there are approximately 700 million Pentecostal and Charismatic believers worldwide today? That’s about 1 in 3 Christians globally who identify with this experience of Spirit-empowered living. This isn't a small corner of the faith; it is a global movement of God’s grace.

The Initial Evidence: Why Tongues?

One of the most common questions we get at FA Memphis is: "Do I have to speak in tongues?"

In AG theology, we distinguish between the Initial Physical Evidence and the Gift of Tongues.

  • Initial Evidence: This is the first outward sign that you have received the Baptism. Just as the wind is invisible but you see the leaves move, the Spirit is invisible but we "hear" the evidence. It is a personal sign of a completed work.

  • The Gift of Tongues: This is a spiritual gift mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12, used in a church setting for the edification of the body (usually accompanied by an interpretation).

Speaking in tongues isn't the goal, the goal is the power to witness. However, tongues serve as a beautiful, supernatural indicator that you have yielded your most difficult member (the tongue) to the control of the Holy Spirit.

5 Practical Benefits of Being Spirit-Baptized

Why should you "ardently expect and earnestly seek" this experience? Here are five ways it changes your life:

  1. More Boldness: You find a natural courage to share your faith with friends in the 901 or colleagues online.

  2. Deeper Prayer: When you don't have the words to pray, the Spirit intercedes through you (Romans 8:26).

  3. Greater Sensitivity: You become more aware of God’s voice and His "nudges" to help others.

  4. Heightened Worship: There is a new "dimension" to your praise, both in public and in private.

  5. Power for Holiness: It provides an extra surge of strength to overcome habits and live a life that honors Jesus.

How to Receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

If you are a believer in Jesus, this promise is for you. It isn't earned by being "good enough"; it is a gift to be received.

  • Ask: Simply ask the Father. Luke 11:13 says, "If you then... know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

  • Believe: Trust that God is faithful to His Word.

  • Yield: Stop trying to "do" it and start yielding. As you pray, you may feel the urge to speak words that aren't English (or your native language). Step out in faith and speak those sounds, trusting the Spirit to give the utterance.

  • Wait in Expectancy: Sometimes it happens instantly; sometimes it happens in a quiet moment of "tarrying" or waiting before God.

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't just about a "feeling", it's about functioning. It’s about having the "more" of God so you can do "more" for His Kingdom.

Are you ready to experience the "more" that God has for your life?
