The Fruit of the Spirit is the spontaneous work of the Holy Spirit in a believer’s character. It consists of nine qualities: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These traits are the evidence of a life submitted to Jesus Christ and empowered by His Spirit.
Definition: The Fruit of the Spirit
The Fruit of the Spirit is the internal transformation and outward character produced by the Holy Spirit in those who belong to Christ. Unlike "works of the flesh" (human effort), these qualities are the supernatural byproduct of abiding in God’s presence. In the Assemblies of God tradition, this "fruit" is the primary evidence of a sanctified life.

The Apostle Paul wrote Galatians 5 to a group of believers who were trying to "earn" their way into God’s favor through legalism and human effort. He wanted them to understand that true holiness doesn't come from a checklist of rules, it comes from a Relationship.
When you walk with the Spirit, your life begins to look different. You don't just "try" to be nicer; the Spirit of God literally changes the "soil" of your heart so that new things begin to grow.

The "fruit" is singular, it is one fruit with nine distinct flavors. You cannot pick and choose; the Spirit wants to produce all of these in you simultaneously.

In Spirit-filled communities like FA Memphis, we celebrate the Gifts of the Spirit (prophecy, healing, tongues, etc.). These gifts are the power for ministry. However, the Fruit of the Spirit is the character for living.
A person can be gifted but still be immature. A person can have power but lack love. In the Assemblies of God 101 foundational teachings, we emphasize that while the gifts are vital for the mission, the fruit is vital for the person. Gifts are given in a moment; fruit is grown over a season. Without the fruit, the gifts lose their credibility.
How Do You Cultivate This Fruit? (The "Abide" Principle)
If you are struggling to find patience or peace today, the answer isn't "trying harder." You cannot manufacture the Fruit of the Spirit any more than an apple tree can "try" to make an apple.
Jesus gives us the secret in John 15:5: "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
1. Stay in the Word: The Bible is the water that feeds the roots of your soul. 2. Prioritize Prayer: Prayer is how we stay connected to the Vine. It’s not just asking for things; it’s being with Someone. 3. Surrender Daily: The Spirit cannot fill a heart that is already full of itself. Repentance is the process of pulling the weeds so the Fruit can grow.
Common Misconceptions About the Fruit of the Spirit
"It's just about being a 'good person'." No, secular "niceness" is different from biblical fruit. Biblical fruit is God-centered and Spirit-empowered. It reflects the heart of Jesus, not just social etiquette.
"I'm just naturally an impatient person." This is a lie from the enemy. The Spirit of God is not limited by your personality or your past. He is a Restorer. He can grow patience in the most hurried heart and peace in the most anxious mind.
"Fruit grows instantly." Growth takes time. If you stumbled today, don't give up. The Holy Spirit is a patient gardener. He continues to prune, water, and lead you toward maturity.
