Bible Study: What Is the Role of the Holy Spirit Today?

Aug 9
6 min read

The Christian life was never meant to be lived by human strength alone.

The Holy Spirit is not an abstract force, a passing emotion, or a historical figure limited to the book of Acts. He is God’s present and personal Helper, teaching believers, guiding them into truth, empowering them to witness, strengthening them in prayer, and forming Christlike character.

What is the role of the Holy Spirit today?

The Holy Spirit is God’s abiding presence in every believer who has surrendered to Christ. He comforts, teaches, guides, convicts, empowers, gives spiritual gifts, helps us pray, and produces holy character as we follow Jesus.

The Holy Spirit is God’s personal presence

Jesus promised His disciples that the Father would send “another Helper” who would remain with them forever (John 14:16–17). This promise reveals something essential: the Holy Spirit is not merely an influence or spiritual atmosphere. He is a divine Person who relates to believers and faithfully points them to Jesus.

FA Memphis teaches that God is one eternal God revealed in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is fully God, active in creation, salvation, the Church, and the everyday lives of believers.

Definition , Holy Spirit: The third Person of the Trinity, fully God and personally present with believers to reveal Christ, apply God’s Word, empower holy living, and equip the Church.

Jesus said the Holy Spirit would teach His followers and remind them of what He had said (John 14:26). That means the Spirit never leads us away from Scripture or away from Jesus. His guidance agrees with God’s Word and produces humility, truth, love, and obedience.

Five ways the Holy Spirit works today

1. He brings us to Christ and gives new life

The Holy Spirit exposes our need for God and draws us toward repentance and faith in Jesus. Salvation is by grace through faith, not by human achievement, but the Spirit awakens our hearts to the truth of the Gospel.

Romans 8:9 teaches that anyone who belongs to Christ has the Spirit of Christ. The Spirit does not simply improve our old life; He gives us new life and begins the work of transformation within us.

Definition , Salvation: God’s gracious rescue from sin and its consequences through faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

If you are aware of sin, conviction is not the same as condemnation. The Holy Spirit corrects in order to restore. He leads us away from hiding and toward the mercy of God.

2. He teaches and guides us into truth

The Holy Spirit is our Holy Spirit guide, helping us understand Scripture and apply it faithfully. He gives wisdom for decisions, clarity in confusion, and discernment when voices compete for our attention.

This does not mean every personal impression is automatically God’s voice. Spirit-led guidance should be tested by:

  1. The teaching of Scripture

  2. The character of Jesus

  3. The wisdom of mature believers

  4. The fruit produced in our lives

  5. Prayerful surrender rather than personal preference

The Spirit’s guidance will never contradict the Bible He inspired. He does not inflate our pride; He deepens our dependence on Christ.

3. He empowers believers to witness and serve

Before ascending to heaven, Jesus told His disciples, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8).

The Spirit’s power has a purpose. It is not given for spiritual status or performance. It equips ordinary believers to speak about Jesus, serve faithfully, love courageously, and participate in God’s mission.

The Assemblies of God believes in the baptism in the Holy Spirit as a distinct experience available to every believer. Acts 2 describes the outpouring of the Spirit at Pentecost, including speaking in other tongues as the Spirit enabled. In classic Pentecostal belief, speaking in tongues is understood as the initial physical evidence of Spirit baptism.

Definition , Baptism in the Holy Spirit: A distinct work of the Spirit in which believers are empowered for witness, ministry, prayer, and service, following the pattern revealed in Acts 1–2.

Spirit baptism does not replace salvation, Scripture, or Christian character. Instead, it deepens our participation in God’s mission. Power and holiness belong together.

4. He helps us pray in weakness

There are moments when we know we need to pray but cannot find the right words. Romans 8:26 offers profound comfort: the Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for believers according to God’s will.

The Holy Spirit is present in anxious moments, grief, uncertainty, and spiritual exhaustion. He does not shame us for weakness. He meets us there and helps us turn toward God.

Prayer in the Spirit can include quiet surrender, Scripture-shaped prayer, worship, intercession, and, within Pentecostal practice, praying in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance. Whatever form prayer takes, its direction is toward God and its fruit is deeper trust in Him.

5. He produces Christlike character

The clearest evidence of the Spirit’s work is not spiritual vocabulary. It is a transformed life.

Galatians 5:22–23 describes the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These qualities are not manufactured through willpower alone. They grow as believers walk with the Spirit and yield their lives to God.

Definition , Sanctification: The lifelong work of the Holy Spirit by which believers are made increasingly like Jesus in character, conduct, and devotion.

The Spirit may empower a believer in a public moment, but He also works in private decisions: telling the truth, forgiving someone, resisting temptation, serving without recognition, and choosing patience when anger feels easier.

What does walking by the Spirit look like?

Walking by the Spirit is not a mysterious performance reserved for a select few. It is a daily relationship of surrender and obedience.

  1. Begin with Scripture. Read the Bible slowly and ask what it reveals about Jesus, sin, grace, and faithful living.

  2. Pray honestly. Bring your fears, questions, desires, and weaknesses to God.

  3. Obey what God has already made clear. Guidance becomes clearer when we practice faithfulness.

  4. Stay connected to Christian community. The Spirit forms believers into the body of Christ, not isolated spiritual consumers.

  5. Use your gifts to serve others. Spiritual gifts are given for the common good, not personal applause.

  6. Look for spiritual fruit. Ask whether your choices are producing love, peace, humility, courage, and self-control.

The life takeaway

The Holy Spirit today is not distant from ordinary life. He is present when you open Scripture, ask for wisdom, pray through weakness, resist temptation, serve your neighbor, and tell someone about Jesus.

The Spirit does not make us independent from God. He makes us more dependent on Christ, and more available to love people.
