Bible Study: Where Should You Start Reading the Bible?

If you are opening the Bible for the first time, it can feel like stepping into a vast, ancient library. The best place to start is the Gospel of John. It introduces you directly to Jesus, His love, His miracles, and His heart for you, providing a clear, beautiful foundation for everything else you will read.

Opening the Word of God should never feel like a chore or a confusing academic exercise. It is meant to be a conversation with the Creator of your soul. However, when you look at a book that spans thousands of years of history and contains sixty-six different books, it is natural to ask: "Where do I even begin?"

Many people make the mistake of starting on page one (Genesis) and trying to read straight through to the end. While Genesis is a magnificent book of beginnings, many new readers get bogged down when they reach the more technical laws and genealogies of the later Old Testament. By starting with the life of Jesus, you are starting with the "Living Word" who makes sense of all the pages that came before Him and all the pages that follow.

Start With the Gospel of John: The Heart of Jesus

The Gospel of John was written specifically so that you "may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name" (John 20:31). Unlike the other Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), which focus heavily on the chronological events of Jesus' life, John focuses on the identity of Jesus.

In John, you will find some of the most famous and comforting words ever written. You will read about Jesus as the "Light of the World" who chases away our darkness, the "Good Shepherd" who lays down His life for His sheep, and the "Way, the Truth, and the Life." If you are searching for hope, identity, or a sense of belonging, John is the perfect place to sit and listen. It doesn't just tell you what Jesus did; it tells you who He is to you.

Next Steps: Mark, Genesis, and the Psalms

Once you have finished the Gospel of John, you don't have to wander aimlessly. Here are three other excellent landing spots for a beginner:

The Gospel of Mark (For Action and Clarity) If you prefer a fast-paced story, Mark is the shortest Gospel and moves quickly from one miracle to the next. It uses the word "immediately" over forty times! It is a great way to see the power and authority of Jesus in action.

The Book of Genesis (For Foundations and Big Questions) After you have met Jesus in the Gospels, going back to Genesis helps you understand why we need a Savior in the first place. You’ll see the beauty of creation, the tragedy of the fall, and the incredible promise of God to stay with His people through every generation.

The Psalms (For Emotion and Prayer) The Psalms are a collection of songs and poems that cover every human emotion, from joy and praise to deep grief and anger. If you don't know how to pray, reading a Psalm back to God is a wonderful way to find your voice.

Practical Tips for Your First Week

Reading the Bible is a journey, not a race. You are not trying to "get through" the book; you are trying to get the book "through" you.

  1. Choose a Modern Translation: If you find the language of older Bibles difficult, try a translation like the New International Version (NIV) or the New Living Translation (NLT). These are designed to be clear and readable while staying true to the original text.

  2. Set a Consistent Time: Whether it's five minutes with your morning coffee or ten minutes before bed, consistency matters more than quantity.

  3. Pray Before You Open the Page: Simply say, "God, please speak to my heart today. Help me understand what I'm reading."

  4. Don't Worry About What You Don't Understand: There will be names and places that are hard to pronounce and concepts that feel strange. That’s okay. Focus on what is clear, and over time, the rest will begin to make sense.
