Bible Study: Who Is Jesus and Why Does He Matter?

Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, fully divine and fully human, who became the perfect sacrifice for our sins. He is the Savior who restores our relationship with God, the Friend who stays closer than a brother, and the reigning King who offers us eternal hope and new life.
When we ask the question "Who is Jesus?", we are not just looking for a historical figure or a great teacher from the past. We are searching for the One who holds the keys to our identity, our peace, and our eternal future. In a world that is often noisy, confusing, and overwhelming, Jesus stands as the steady anchor for our souls. He is the "Logos," the Word of God made flesh, who stepped into time and space to ensure that you would never have to walk through life alone.
Scripture tells us in John 1:1, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." This foundation is vital because it reminds us that Jesus isn’t just a "good man" or a "prophetic voice." He is God Himself, reaching out to humanity. Because He is fully God, He has the power to save us; because He is fully man, He has the capacity to empathize with every pain, temptation, and sorrow you face.

To understand Jesus is to understand the heart of the Father. For many, God can feel distant, like a judge behind a high wall or a creator who started a clock and walked away. But Jesus is the "express image" of God’s person. When you look at how Jesus treated the broken, the lonely, and the searching, you are seeing exactly how God feels about you. He didn’t come to condemn the world but to save it. He reached out to those society had forgotten: the tax collectors, the outcasts, and the weary: and He offered them a place at His table.
The Bible reveals Jesus through several powerful roles. First, He is our Savior. This is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. We believe that humanity was separated from God by sin, a gap we could never bridge on our own. Jesus became that bridge. By living a sinless life and dying a substitutionary death on the cross, He paid a debt He didn’t owe because we owed a debt we couldn’t pay. As the Assemblies of God 16 Fundamental Truths affirm, His death was not just a tragic end but a triumphant beginning. It was the moment the price was paid in full, opening the door for anyone: regardless of their past: to step into a relationship with God.
But He didn't stay in the grave. The bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ is the ultimate proof of His divinity and His victory over death. Because He lives, we can face tomorrow with confidence. His resurrection means that death is no longer a dead end; it is a doorway. It means that the broken things in your life can be redeemed and that "new life" isn't just a poetic phrase: it is a spiritual reality available to you right now.

Jesus is also the Great Physician and the Prince of Peace. Many of us come to a screen today carrying heavy burdens: anxiety about the future, the weight of grief, or the exhaustion of trying to be "enough." In Matthew 11:28, Jesus gives a beautiful invitation: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." This rest isn't just a nap or a vacation; it is a deep, soul-level peace that remains even when the storms of life are raging. Knowing Jesus means having access to a peace that surpasses understanding.
Furthermore, we recognize Jesus as the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit. This is a significant emphasis in our community. We believe that Jesus didn't just save us and leave us to struggle in our own strength. He promised to send a Helper, the Holy Spirit, to empower us, guide us, and comfort us. This spiritual empowerment is what turns a quiet faith into a vibrant, living witness. It gives us the courage to pray for the sick, the wisdom to navigate difficult conversations, and the strength to live with integrity in a complicated world.
Knowing "who Jesus is" also helps us understand who we are. Without Him, we often find our identity in our jobs, our mistakes, our family roles, or our social media profiles. But when we are in Christ, our identity is found in Him. You are a child of God, redeemed, forgiven, and chosen. You aren't defined by what you’ve done; you are defined by what He has done for you. This shift in perspective is what brings true freedom. It allows you to let go of the need for perfection and instead rest in His grace.

As you walk through your daily life, Jesus is also your Intercessor. Hebrews 7:25 tells us that He "always lives to intercede" for us. Imagine that: right now, at the right hand of the Father, Jesus is praying for you. He knows your name, He sees your struggles, and He is advocating for your soul. You are never forgotten, and you are never truly alone. Whether you are working a night shift, caring for an aging parent, or searching for answers from a hospital room, His presence is accessible to you through a simple whisper of His name.
Finally, we look forward to Jesus as the soon-coming King. This is our "blessed hope." We believe that the stories of this world don't end in chaos or despair. Jesus will return to set all things right, to wipe away every tear, and to establish His kingdom of peace and justice. This future promise gives us the resilience to endure the hardships of the present. We don't live like people who are defeated; we live like people who know how the story ends.
If you are feeling disconnected or spiritually curious, I want to invite you to take a step closer to Him. Jesus isn't looking for religious experts; He is looking for honest hearts. You can start right where you are. You don't need to clean up your life before you come to Him; you come to Him so that He can lead you into the life He designed for you.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to be the light in our darkness and the hope in our despair. We acknowledge that Jesus is Lord, our Savior, and our Friend. For the one reading this who feels lost, we ask that You would reveal the shepherd's heart of Jesus to them today. Let them feel Your presence, Your peace, and Your overwhelming love. Thank You for the gift of salvation and the promise that we are never alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.
