Bible Study: Who Is Jesus? , The One Question That Changes Everything

Jesus is the Son of God, fully God and fully man, who came to earth, lived sinlessly, died for our sins, and rose again. He is not merely a teacher, prophet, or moral example. He is the only way to salvation and eternal life, the Savior who reveals the Father and invites us into a restored relationship with God.

The question “Who is Jesus?” is not only a question for theologians or Bible scholars. It is a question for every person. Our answer shapes what we believe about God, sin, forgiveness, purpose, death, hope, and eternity.

John 14:6 and Colossians 1:15–20 give us a clear, Scripture-centered view of Jesus. Together, these passages show us His identity, His authority, His humanity, His saving work, and His invitation to follow Him.

Jesus Is the Way, the Truth, and the Life

John 14 takes place during a deeply emotional moment. Jesus is preparing His disciples for His departure. They are troubled, confused, and afraid. Thomas asks how they can know the way to where Jesus is going.

Jesus responds with words that have comforted believers for centuries:

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

Notice that Jesus does not say, “I know the way,” or “I can show you one possible way.” He says, “I am the way.” The answer to the disciples’ uncertainty is not merely a map, a religious system, or a list of rules. The answer is a Person.

Jesus Is the Way

Humanity’s deepest problem is separation from God because of sin. We cannot repair that separation through good intentions, religious effort, personal achievement, or moral comparison. We need a mediator, someone who can bring us back to the Father.

Jesus is that mediator. Through His death and resurrection, He opened the way for sinners to be forgiven and reconciled to God. Salvation is not something we earn. It is received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

This truth is exclusive, but it is not cruel. Jesus does not turn away the humble, the broken, the doubtful, or the spiritually curious. He invites all people to come to Him. The same Savior who says He is the only way also says, “Whoever comes to me I will never drive away” (John 6:37).

Jesus Is the Truth

Jesus does not merely teach truth; He embodies it. He reveals what God is like. His compassion shows us God’s mercy. His holiness shows us God’s purity. His authority shows us God’s power. His willingness to suffer shows us God’s love.

In a world filled with competing voices, Jesus is not one opinion among many. He is the final revelation of God’s character and will. His words challenge us, comfort us, correct us, and lead us into freedom.

If you are asking whether God sees you, look at Jesus. If you wonder whether God cares about suffering, look at Jesus. If you need to know whether forgiveness is possible, look at Jesus on the cross. If you want to understand God’s heart, begin with Christ.

Jesus Is the Life

Jesus gives more than temporary inspiration. He gives spiritual life now and eternal life to come. Sin brings spiritual death, but Christ brings forgiveness, new birth, and reconciliation with God.

The life Jesus gives is not a promise that every circumstance will immediately become easy. It is the presence of God within us through the Holy Spirit, the hope of resurrection, and the assurance that our lives are held by the One who conquered death.

Jesus Is the Image of the Invisible God

Colossians 1:15–20 is one of the clearest passages in the New Testament about the identity and supremacy of Jesus. Paul writes that Jesus is “the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation” (Colossians 1:15).

God is spirit and cannot be seen with human eyes. Yet in Jesus Christ, God made Himself known in a way people could see, hear, touch, and encounter. Jesus is not a partial or distorted picture of God. He perfectly reveals the Father.

When Philip later asks Jesus to show the disciples the Father, Jesus answers, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). This does not mean that Jesus is the Father as the same Person. Scripture reveals the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as distinct Persons within the one true God. It means that Jesus perfectly makes the Father known.

What Does “Firstborn” Mean in Colossians 1?

Some readers misunderstand the phrase “firstborn over all creation” to mean that Jesus was the first thing God created. But the verses that follow make that interpretation impossible.

Colossians 1:16 says that all things were created through Jesus and for Jesus, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. If all things were created through Him, Jesus cannot be part of the created order. He is the Creator, not a creature.

In this passage, “firstborn” points to supremacy, authority, and inheritance. Jesus is above all creation. He is Lord over everything that exists. All things were created through Him, all things were created for Him, and in Him all things hold together.

This truth matters when life feels unstable. Your circumstances may feel like they are coming apart, but creation itself is held together in Christ. The One who sustains the universe is not indifferent to your life. He is Lord over your history, your pain, your questions, and your future.

Jesus Is Fully God and Fully Human

The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully human. He is one Person with a divine nature and a human nature. He did not stop being God when He became man, and He did not merely appear to be human.

Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He experienced real human growth, hunger, tiredness, grief, pain, temptation, and death. At the same time, He remained the eternal Son of God, holy and without sin.

His humanity is essential to our salvation. Jesus had to become truly human in order to stand in our place. He could suffer, bleed, and die as our representative because He shared our humanity.

His deity is equally essential. Only the divine Son could perfectly reveal the Father, live in complete holiness, defeat sin, and provide a saving sacrifice of infinite worth. If Jesus were only a man, He could not save us from sin. If He were not truly human, He could not die in our place.

Colossians 1:19–20 connects Jesus’ identity with His saving work. The fullness of God dwells in Him, and through Him God reconciles sinners through the blood of the cross. The cross was not an accident or merely an example of courage. It was God’s redemptive plan to bring forgiveness and peace to those who trust in Christ.

Why Did Jesus Have to Die?

Sin is more than a mistake or a failure to reach our personal potential. Sin is rebellion against a holy God. It damages our relationship with Him and places us under guilt and condemnation.

Because God is holy, sin must be judged. Because God is loving, He provided a way for sinners to be saved. At the cross, Jesus willingly took the place of sinners. He bore our guilt, paid the penalty we deserved, and made reconciliation possible.

Jesus’ death demonstrates both the seriousness of sin and the depth of God’s love. We should never treat sin lightly, but neither should we believe our sin is greater than Christ’s grace.

Then Jesus rose bodily from the grave. The resurrection confirms that His sacrifice was accepted, death was defeated, and Jesus is truly Lord. Christianity is not built on a collection of inspiring sayings from a dead teacher. It is built on the risen Christ.

What Does Jesus’ Identity Mean for Your Life?

If Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, then He cannot remain a distant subject of study. He calls for a response.

For the spiritually curious, Jesus welcomes honest questions. You do not have to pretend to understand everything before seeking Him. Begin by reading one of the Gospels, praying honestly, and asking God to help you see Jesus clearly.

For the person carrying shame, Jesus offers forgiveness. Repentance means turning from sin and turning toward God. It is not self-punishment. It is a humble return to the One who can make us new.

For the anxious heart, Jesus offers His presence. He does not promise that every trouble will disappear immediately, but He promises that those who belong to Him are never abandoned.

For the believer, Jesus is not only Savior but Lord. He deserves our worship, obedience, trust, time, relationships, decisions, and future. Discipleship means learning to follow Him in every part of life.

As you continue exploring faith, you may find encouragement in this reflection for times when you have no words to pray, or in this biblical encouragement for an anxious mind. You can also consider how the Christian faith responds to suffering with honesty and hope.

How Can I Begin a Relationship With Jesus?

You begin by responding to Jesus with repentance and faith. You can speak to Him honestly in prayer. Admit your need for God, confess your sin, believe that Jesus died and rose again for you, and surrender your life to His leadership.

A simple prayer cannot save you as a magic formula. Jesus saves. But prayer can express a sincere response of faith:

“Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God. I confess that I am a sinner and need Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. Please save me, make me new, and teach me to follow You. I surrender my life to You. Amen.”

If you prayed sincerely, continue taking faithful steps. Read the Bible regularly. Pray honestly. Join a Christ-centered community. Ask questions. Learn from mature believers. Baptism and participation in a local church are important expressions of obedience and belonging.

Questions People Often Ask About Jesus

Who is Jesus according to the Bible?

Jesus is the eternal Son of God who became truly human. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, lived without sin, died for our sins, rose bodily from the dead, and is Lord and Savior. He is the way to the Father and the head of the Church.

What does it mean that Jesus is fully God and fully human?

It means Jesus is one Person with a fully divine nature and a fully human nature. He is not half God and half human. He is truly God and truly man. His deity enables Him to reveal God and save, while His humanity enables Him to represent us and die in our place.

Why is Jesus the only way to salvation?

Jesus is the only way to salvation because He alone is the sinless Son of God who died for humanity’s sins and rose again. Salvation is not earned through good works or religious effort. It is received by grace through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

How can I begin a relationship with Jesus today?

Begin by turning to Jesus in repentance and faith. Confess your need for forgiveness, believe in His death and resurrection, surrender your life to Him, and begin learning His Word. Prayer, Bible study, Christian community, and obedience will help you grow as a disciple.

Jesus Is the Answer That Changes Everything

Who is Jesus? He is the eternal Son of God, the Creator, the Savior, the risen Lord, and the only way to the Father. He is fully God and fully human. He is holy enough to save and compassionate enough to welcome sinners home.

The question is not only whether you know facts about Jesus. The deeper question is whether you will trust Him, follow Him, and receive the life He offers.
