Bible Study: Why Are the 16 Fundamental Truths Essential for Your Faith?

Understanding the 16 Fundamental Truths provides a steady, scriptural foundation for your spiritual life, especially in a world that often feels chaotic or confusing. These truths act as anchors, ensuring that your faith remains rooted in the unchanging Word of God while offering clarity, hope, and a clear pathway toward a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.

The Christian journey is rarely a straight line. For those of us in Memphis and across the globe, life brings waves of change, questions, and sometimes deep uncertainty. Whether you are navigating the busy streets of the 901 or connecting with us from a different time zone, having a clear "north star" for your beliefs is vital. The 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God are not just ancient doctrines; they are practical, living principles that help you succeed in your walk with God every single day.

At the very heart of everything we believe is the conviction that the Scriptures are Inspired. The Bible is not just a collection of historical stories; it is God’s self-revelation to humanity. When you open your Bible, you aren't just reading words; you are hearing the voice of your Creator. This is the first truth because it is the foundation for all others. In our 16 Fundamental Truths Bible Study, we recognize that the Bible is our authoritative rule for faith and conduct. It tells us who God is, who we are, and how we can live a life that truly matters.

Following this is the revelation of The One True God. We believe in one God who has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent "I AM," the Creator of heaven and earth. He exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This Trinity is at the core of our worship. In Memphis, where community and family are so highly valued, understanding that God Himself exists in a perfect community of three-in-one helps us see why we were created for connection and love.

Central to our salvation is The Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that Jesus is fully God and fully human. His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, and His substitutionary work on the cross are the only reasons we have hope. His bodily resurrection from the dead and His exaltation to the right hand of God provide the ultimate proof that sin and death have been defeated. When you feel overwhelmed by the headlines or personal struggles, remembering that Jesus is currently reigning in power changes your perspective from fear to faith.

However, we must also acknowledge The Fall of Man. Scripture tells us that humanity was created good and upright, but through voluntary transgression, we fell. This fall brought not only physical death but spiritual death, which is separation from God. This is why we feel that inner restlessness and why the world is broken. Acknowledging this isn't about shame; it’s about recognizing our need for a Savior.

This leads us to the most beautiful truth: The Salvation of Man. Salvation is the "cardinal doctrine" that changes everything. It is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. By the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, being justified by grace through faith, we become heirs of God. This salvation is a free gift, and it is available to anyone, anywhere: from the person sitting in a quiet room in Memphis to the traveler halfway around the world.

As a community, we celebrate this through The Ordinances of the Church. We practice water baptism by immersion, a public declaration that we have died with Christ and have been raised with Him to walk in newness of life. We also share in Holy Communion, the Lord’s Supper, which consists of the elements: bread and the fruit of the vine. This is a symbolic memorial of His suffering and death and a prophecy of His second coming. It connects us to believers across all generations and geographies.

For those seeking spiritual strength, The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a vital truth. We believe this is an experience distinct from and following the experience of the new birth. It was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church. With it comes the enduement of power for life and service, and the bestowment of the gifts and their uses in the work of the ministry. This is followed by The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, which is the sign of speaking in tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance. This isn't just a theological point; it's an invitation to a life of supernatural empowerment and bold witness in our daily lives.

As we walk with God, we enter the process of Sanctification. This is an act of separation from that which is evil and of dedication unto God. It is both an immediate position we have in Christ and a lifelong journey of becoming more like Him. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that we are able to obey the command: "Be ye holy, for I am holy." This process is what allows our faith to produce real, tangible fruit in our families, our workplaces, and our city.

The 16 truths also define The Church and Its Mission. The Church is the Body of Christ, the habitation of God through the Spirit. Its mission is to be an agency of God for evangelizing the world, to be a corporate body in which man may worship God, to be a channel of God’s purpose to build a body of saints being perfected in the image of His Son, and to be a people who demonstrate God’s love and compassion for all the world. At Boundless Online Church, we take this mission seriously, creating a space where the "church-hurt," the curious, and the committed can all find a place to belong.

Supporting this mission is The Ministry. A divinely called and scripturally ordained ministry has been provided by our Lord for the threefold purpose of leading the Church in evangelization, worship, and building up the body of believers. This isn't about titles; it's about service. It’s about leaders in Memphis and beyond who are dedicated to shepherd God’s people with truth and grace.

One of the most comforting truths we hold is Divine Healing. We believe that deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of all believers. Whether you are facing a physical ailment, emotional trauma, or the exhaustion of caregiving, we believe that Jesus is still the Healer. We pray for the sick with confidence, knowing that God’s power is not limited by distance or digital screens.

Looking toward the future, we hold onto The Blessed Hope. This is the resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord. This is our great encouragement: that this life is not all there is. It is followed by The Millennial Reign of Christ, the second coming of Christ with His saints to rule on earth for one thousand years. This reign will bring the salvation of national Israel and the establishment of universal peace. In a world full of conflict, this promise of a literal kingdom of peace is our ultimate comfort.

We also recognize the reality of The Final Judgment. There will be a final judgment in which the wicked dead will be raised and judged according to their works. Whosoever is not found written in the Book of Life will be consigned to everlasting punishment. While this is a sobering truth, it underscores the urgency of our mission to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with everyone we can reach.

Finally, we look forward to The New Heavens and the New Earth. "We, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness." This is the ultimate success in our faith: eternal life in a perfect creation, dwelling in the direct presence of God forever. No more tears, no more pain, and no more separation. This is the destination of every believer.
