Bible Study: Why Are the 16 Fundamental Truths Essential for Your Faith?

The 16 Fundamental Truths provide a biblical anchor for your faith by summarizing the core teachings of Scripture. In a world of shifting opinions, these truths offer a reliable foundation for understanding God’s nature, salvation, and your divine purpose, helping you grow into a deeper, more confident relationship with Jesus Christ. They also help guard your heart and mind with a clear Assemblies of God worldview rooted in God’s Word, whether you are growing through online church or practicing digital discipleship during the week.

When you start looking for a church or a place to study the Bible, especially if you are searching for an Assemblies of God church in Memphis or online, you might come across a list of "Fundamental Truths." For some, a list of doctrines can feel intimidating or overly formal. But at its heart, a Bible study on these 16 truths isn't about memorizing rules; it’s about discovering the beautiful, consistent character of the God who loves you. These truths are the "non-negotiables" of our faith: the pillars that hold up the roof of our spiritual house.

Whether you are homebound, working odd hours, or just spiritually curious from behind a screen, understanding these core beliefs helps you navigate life’s storms with a peace that doesn't make sense to the world. In online church spaces and digital discipleship conversations, sound doctrine matters because people need truth they can trust. You are seen. You are loved. You are not forgotten. You are never alone. Let’s dive deep into these truths and see how they can transform your daily walk with Jesus.

Everything starts with the Word. We believe the Bible is the inspired, only infallible, and authoritative Word of God (2 Timothy 3:15–17). It isn't just an old book of history; it is a living conversation between a Creator and His children. When you open your Bible, you aren't just reading text; you are hearing the heart of God.

Within that Word, we discover the nature of the One True God. He has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent "I AM," the Creator of heaven and earth, and the Redeemer of mankind. He has further revealed Himself as embodying the principles of relationship and association as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). This Trinity shows us that God is, in His very essence, relational. He didn't create you because He was lonely; He created you to invite you into the love that has always existed between the Father, Son, and Spirit.

We cannot appreciate the light of salvation without understanding the shadows of the fall. Humanity was created good and upright, but by voluntary transgression, we fell and thereby incurred not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is separation from God (Genesis 1:26–27; 3:6). We see the evidence of this fall every day in our headlines, our broken relationships, and our own internal struggles.

But God did not leave us in that brokenness. The salvation of man is found through the shedding of the blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. By the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, being justified by grace through faith, man becomes an heir of God, according to the hope of eternal life (Luke 24:47; Titus 3:5–7).

If you’ve ever wondered, "Can I truly be forgiven for my past?" the answer found in these fundamental truths is a resounding yes. Grace isn't a reward for being good; it’s a gift for those who know they aren't. This is why we celebrate the ordinances of the Church: Water Baptism and Holy Communion. We submerge ourselves in water to show the world we have died to our old lives and risen with Christ, and we take the bread and cup to remember His sacrifice until He returns.

One of the most distinct aspects of an Assemblies of God Memphis or global Bible study is the emphasis on the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. All believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father: the baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire. This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church (Acts 1:4, 8).

This experience is distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth. With the baptism in the Holy Spirit come such experiences as an overflowing fullness of the spirit, a deepened reverence for God, and an intensified consecration to God and dedication to His work. The initial physical sign of the baptism in the Holy Spirit is "speaking in other tongues," as the Spirit of God gives them utterance (Acts 2:4).

Why does this matter for your daily life? Because you weren't meant to live the Christian life on your own strength. The Holy Spirit provides the power to witness, the power to overcome habit, and the power to love people who are hard to love. It is the "fuel" for your spiritual engine.

Sanctification is an act of separation from that which is evil, and of dedication unto God (Romans 12:1–2). It’s a lifelong journey of becoming more like Jesus. You don't become perfect overnight, but as you walk with the Spirit, your desires begin to change. You start to want what He wants.

This personal growth happens within the context of the Church and its mission. The Church is the Body of Christ, the habitation of God through the Spirit, with divine appointments for the fulfillment of her great commission. Each believer, born of the Spirit, is an integral part of the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn, which are written in heaven (Ephesians 1:22–23; 2:22). Our mission is fourfold: to be an agency of God for evangelizing the world, to be a corporate body in which man may worship God, to be a channel of God’s purpose to build a body of saints being perfected in the image of His Son, and to be a people who demonstrate God’s love and compassion for all the world.

A vital part of this mission is the ministry of Divine Healing. Deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of all believers (Isaiah 53:4–5; James 5:14–16). Whether you are struggling with physical pain, emotional trauma, or the weariness of caregiving, we believe that Jesus is still the Healer. He cares about your body just as much as He cares about your soul.

Finally, these 16 truths point us toward the horizon. We live with the "Blessed Hope": the resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17). This isn't a scary event for the believer; it’s the ultimate family reunion.

Following this, there will be the second coming of Christ with His saints to reign on earth for one thousand years. Then comes the final judgment, where those who have rejected Christ will be judged for their sins. But for those who have placed their trust in Him, there is the promise of a New Heavens and a New Earth wherein dwelleth righteousness (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21, 22).

No matter how dark the news feels today, your story ends in light. Your story ends in a kingdom where there are no more tears, no more cancer, no more loneliness, and no more "scrolling" for answers, because Truth Himself will be standing right in front of you.

"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16). These truths aren't just ink on a page; they are the breath of God designed to give you life. When you study them, you aren't just filling your head with facts; you are filling your heart with the very foundation of the universe.

If you feel overwhelmed by all the doctrines, start with just one: Jesus loves you and gave Himself for you. Every other truth flows from that one. As you grow, you’ll find that these 16 principles aren't fences to keep you in, but foundations to help you stand tall. If you are looking for a community to explore these truths with, our Bible Study groups are always open, providing a safe space to ask questions and find biblical answers.

Lord Jesus, thank You for the clarity of Your Word. Thank You that we don't have to guess who You are or what You want for our lives. We ask that You would settle these truths deep in our hearts. For the one who feels lost, let the truth of Your salvation bring them home. For the one who is sick, let the truth of Your healing bring them strength. And for all of us, let the hope of Your return keep our eyes fixed on You. We love You, Lord. Amen.
