A Message from FA Memphis

Studying the 16 Fundamental Truths will change the way you read the Bible because they give you a clear, biblical framework for understanding Scripture in context. They help you stay anchored in sound doctrine, see how the whole Bible fits together, and read with greater clarity, confidence, and spiritual depth.

The Scriptural Foundation

Before we dive into the "why" and the "how," let’s look at what the Word of God says about the importance of sound teaching and the consistency of Scripture. These verses are the bedrock of everything we believe and study together.

2 Timothy 3:16-17: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

2 Peter 1:20-21: "Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit."

Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."

A New Way to See the Word

I remember when I first started taking a serious, deep dive into the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. Before that, my Bible reading was a bit like a scavenger hunt. I’d flip through the pages looking for a verse that matched my mood or a promise that I could hold onto for the day. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, God definitely speaks to us in those moments, I realized I was missing the "big picture." I was seeing the trees, but I had no idea what the forest looked like.

The 16 Fundamental Truths aren't meant to replace the Bible; they are meant to reflect it. They are a summary of the non-negotiable doctrines that keep us grounded. When I study these truths, something shifts in perspective. I begin to see that the Bible isn't just a collection of ancient stories; it’s a unified revelation of God’s character and His plan for humanity. Suddenly, those "hard to understand" passages start making sense because I have a doctrinal home base to return to. Assemblies of God worldview IS the guardrails.

These guardrails don't limit your experience with God; they protect it. They keep us from veering off into interpretations that don't align with the heart of Christ. In a world where everyone seems to have their own "truth," having a shared, scriptural foundation is more important than ever. It gives us a common language and a common hope. It reminds us that we are never forgotten, never alone, and deeply loved by God.

Why the Framework Matters

Have you ever tried to put together a 1,000-piece puzzle without looking at the picture on the box? It’s frustrating, right? You might find a few pieces that fit together, but you don't know where they go in the grand scheme of things. Studying the 16 Fundamental Truths is like finally getting to see the box top. It gives you the "full-gospel" context.

For instance, when we study the truth about the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, it completely changes how we read the Book of Acts. We aren't just reading about what happened to the early church; we are reading about a promise that is available to us today. When we study the truth about Divine Healing, we don't just see Jesus as a historical miracle worker; we see Him as our present-day Healer. This framework helps us move from "what did this mean back then?" to "what does this mean for me right now?"

This deep dive also helps us avoid "proof-texting", the habit of pulling a single verse out of context to make it say whatever we want. When you know the fundamental truths, you start to see how verses interact with one another. You see the harmony between the Old and New Testaments. You see the scarlet thread of redemption that runs from Genesis to Revelation. It turns your Bible reading from a chore into an adventure.

Guarding Your Mind and Heart

As we grow in our understanding of the Word, we also have to be mindful of what else we are letting into our hearts. Just as we use the 16 Fundamental Truths to filter our theology, we need tools to filter our daily consumption of media. We want to be sure that what we watch and listen to aligns with our desire to grow closer to God.

I always recommend using family-safe options like VidAngel or “Enjoy Movies Your Way” when choosing movies. For online safety and accountability, especially for younger people in the home and honestly for all of us, tools like Bark and Covenant Eyes can help create healthier digital habits. I want to create an environment where the Truth can flourish without being choked out by the distractions and temptations of the digital world.

When our digital lives are secure and our theological foundation is firm, we are much better equipped to handle the challenges of life. We aren't easily shaken by every new trend or "wind of doctrine." We know what we believe, and more importantly, we know *Whom* we believe.

Practical Steps for Your Study

If you’re wondering how to start this journey, I suggest taking one Fundamental Truth each week. Read the official statement, but then spend the rest of your time looking up the supporting Scriptures. Don't just take someone else's word for it, see it in the Word for yourself. Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate the text. You’ll be amazed at how much more clearly you hear His voice when you’re looking through the lens of sound doctrine.

I’ve found that writing down my thoughts in a journal helps tremendously. Note where you see these truths appearing in your daily Bible reading. You’ll start to see patterns. You’ll see the "Blessed Hope" mentioned in the epistles, and you’ll connect it back to the promise of the Second Coming. You’ll see the call to sanctification and realize it’s not about following rules, but about being set apart for God’s glorious purpose.
