Does the idea of "family discipleship" feel like one more heavy thing on your to-do list? Between the soccer practices, the laundry piles, and the constant digital hum of our world, trying to sit down for a deep theological discussion with a toddler and a pre-teen can feel nearly impossible. You want your children to know Jesus, but you might feel unsure where to start or overwhelmed by the pressure to be a "perfect" spiritual leader.
Here is the good news: You do not have to be a Bible scholar to disciple your child. You only have to be present, prayerful, and willing to begin. This is not about adding another hour of work to your day; it is about reclaiming the small moments that already exist. At Boundless Online Church and the Boundless Family Faith Library, we believe faith formation happens best through loving relationships and simple, biblical truth.
The Heart of Discipleship: Do This First
Before you pick up a single book or print a worksheet, there is one thing you must do: Surrender the outcome to God.
Discipleship is not a formula where you put in "Bible stories" and automatically get out "perfect children." Discipleship is a relationship. Your primary role is to model what it looks like to love Jesus in the middle of a messy, beautiful, ordinary life. When your children see you turn to God in your own stress, or hear you apologize when you lose your temper, you are teaching them more about the Gospel than a thousand lectures ever could.
Start with prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you eyes to see the "wonder moments" in your day. Ask for the patience to answer the same question for the tenth time and the wisdom to know when to listen rather than speak.
Creating a Daily Rhythm: Morning, Midday, and Evening
Biblical literacy and faith are built through repetition and rhythm. Deuteronomy 6 tells us to talk about God’s truths when we sit, walk, lie down, and rise. Here is a simple framework to help you weave faith into your daily "walk and wonder."
Morning: The Breath of Gratitude
Start the day by framing your child’s heart with the goodness of God. Before the screens turn on or the rush begins, take sixty seconds to acknowledge the Creator.
Action: Light a small candle at the breakfast table or simply pause before the first bite of cereal.
Morning Devotional: "God, thank You for this new day. Thank You for making the sun rise and for giving us breath. Help us to see Your beauty in everything we do today. We love You. Amen."
Scripture: "This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." (Psalm 118:24)

Midday: The Walk of Wonder
Midday is often when energy is high and curiosity is peaking. Use this time to connect the world around them to the Word of God. Whether they are at school, home, or play, encourage them to look for "God-moments."
Action: If you are together, go for a five-minute walk. If you are apart, ask them at lunch: "What is one beautiful thing you saw today that God made?"
Midday Devotional: "Jesus, thank You that You are always with us, even when we are busy or playing. Give us courage to be kind to our friends and wonder at the world You created. Amen."

Evening: The Rest of Blessing
Bedtime is the most vulnerable and precious time for discipleship. It is when the questions come out and the heart settles. This is the time for safety and belonging.
Action: Use a "Blessing Script." Place your hand gently on your child’s head or shoulder and speak truth over them.
Evening Devotional: "You are safe with God. He never sleeps, and He is watching over you right now. You are loved, you are valuable, and you belong to Him. Rest well, little one."
Scripture: "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety." (Psalm 4:8)

Stories for Every Age: Meeting Them Where They Are
The Boundless Family Faith Library creates resources tailored to your child’s developmental stage. Discipleship looks different at age three than it does at age twelve.
Segment A: Ages 3–6 (Early Childhood) At this age, children need to feel safe and loved. Focus on the simple truth: God made me, and Jesus loves me. Use repetition and gentle imagery.
Story Idea: A story about a little bird who gets lost but remembers that God’s eye is always on him.
Segment B: Ages 7–9 (Early Elementary) These children are starting to understand moral choices and friendship. Focus on courage and forgiveness. Help them see how Jesus helps them make good choices.
Story Idea: A story about two friends who have a disagreement and learn how to use "kind words" and forgiveness to heal their friendship.
Segment C: Ages 10–12 (Pre-Teen) Pre-teens are wrestling with identity and belonging. They need to know their worth is found in Christ, not in their performance or their peers. Encourage them to ask deep questions and start a prayer journal.
Story Idea: A story about a young person feeling "invisible" at school, discovering that they are fully seen and known by God.
Building Biblical Foundations: The Truths We Hold
In the Assemblies of God tradition, we hold to 16 Fundamental Truths. For a child, these don't need to be complex theological papers. They are the "guardrails" that keep them safe in their faith.
The Bible is True: It is God’s letter to us.
There is One God: He is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Jesus is God’s Son: He came to save us because He loves us.
The Holy Spirit is our Helper: He gives us power to live for Jesus.
Teaching these truths through story and conversation helps your child build a "faith house" on a rock-solid foundation. We avoid fear-based lessons or shame-based obedience. Instead, we point to the grace of Jesus that leads to transformation.
