Bible Time for Kids : How Do I Teach My Kids About Jesus at Home?

Teaching your kids about Jesus at home starts with making faith a natural part of your daily routine through prayer, reading the Bible together, and modeling a Christ-centered life. While church programs and Sunday schools are wonderful supplements, the home is the primary place where a child’s faith is formed.

Parents often feel overwhelmed by the digital age. They worry that the world is shouting louder than they are. But here’s the secret: your influence as a parent carries a weight that no YouTube influencer or video game ever will. Teaching your kids about Jesus isn't about giving a 45-minute lecture every evening. It’s about the small, consistent moments that show them who Jesus is and how much He cares for them.

1. Make Faith Part of the "Walking Around" Life

In the book of Deuteronomy, we’re given a beautiful blueprint for family faith. It tells us to talk about God’s Word when we sit in our houses, when we walk by the way, when we lie down, and when we rise up. Essentially, it’s saying: make faith part of your "walking around" life.

You don’t have to set up a podium in your living room. Instead, look for "God-moments" in the mundane.

• During a walk: Point out a beautiful sunset or a unique bird and ask, "Isn't it amazing how God thought of every little detail when He made the world?"

• At the grocery store: When you see someone in need or a moment to be kind, explain that we love others because Jesus first loved us.

• At bedtime: Instead of just checking off a list of "I wants" in prayer, ask your child, "What is one thing Jesus did for you today that made you happy?"

By weaving Jesus into your normal conversations, you teach your children that He isn't just a character in a book: He is a living, breathing part of your family.

2. Navigating the Digital Age with Intention

We live in a world where screens are everywhere. Rather than fighting the digital tide, let’s use it as a tool for discipleship. Technology can be a bridge to faith if we use it with intention.

There are incredible family resources available online that can help spark these conversations. Whether it’s high-quality animated Bible stories or worship music videos, digital content can be a great starting point.

However, tech safety is paramount. We always encourage parents to be "active participants" in their children's digital world. Don't just hand over the tablet; watch the video with them. Ask them questions about what they saw. Use the technology to open a door to a conversation, rather than letting it be a wall that shuts you out. 3. The Power of Story and Play

Kids learn best through stories and play. Jesus knew this: that’s why He taught in parables. When you read the Bible with your children, try to bring the stories to life.

• Use what you have: Build the walls of Jericho out of LEGOs and let them tumble down. Use stuffed animals to represent the animals on Noah’s Ark.

• Engage the senses: If you’re reading about Jesus calming the storm, spray a little water in the air or turn on a fan to mimic the wind.

• Ask "What if?": Ask your kids, "How do you think David felt when he saw the giant?" This helps them move from just hearing a story to feeling the weight of the faith involved.

4. Prayer as an Ongoing Conversation

Many kids (and adults!) feel like prayer has to be formal and filled with "Thees" and "Thous." We want to teach our children that prayer is simply talking to our best friend.

Encourage your kids to talk to Jesus throughout the day. If they are scared, remind them they can whisper His name. If they are excited, they can shout a "Thank you, Jesus!" in the backyard. Modeling your own prayer life is key here. Let them hear you pray for the neighbor who is sick, or for guidance when you’re feeling stressed. When they see that prayer is your first response rather than a last resort, they will naturally follow suit.

5. Leading with Authenticity and Grace

Perhaps the most important tip I can give you is this: be real. Your kids don't need a perfect parent; they need a parent who is pointing them toward a perfect Savior.

When you lose your temper, apologize. Tell them, "I’m sorry I didn't show the kindness of Jesus just then. Will you forgive me?" This is a powerful lesson in grace and repentance. It shows them that we all need Jesus every single day.

Our goal isn't just to teach them about Jesus, but to help them know Jesus. That happens when they see His love and forgiveness reflected in your life, even in the messy moments.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 "These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."

Proverbs 22:6 "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."

Matthew 19:14 "Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.'"

In our fast-paced, digital world, it’s easy to feel like you’re losing the battle for your child's heart. But remember, God chose you to be their parent for a reason. You have a unique window into their lives that no one else has. Teaching your kids about Jesus doesn't require a master plan: it requires a consistent presence. Every time you show grace, every time you pray together, and every time you choose kindness, you are laying a brick in the foundation of their faith. Keep it simple, keep it honest, and keep pointing them to the One who loves them even more than you do.
