Boundless Daily: Day 36 - Faith in the Unknown

There is a specific kind of silence that happens when you are standing in the middle of a thick fog. If you’ve ever been on a mountain trail early in the morning, you know the feeling. The world shrinks. You can’t see the peak you’re climbing toward, and you can’t even see the valley you just left behind. All you have is the square foot of dirt right beneath your boots.

For many of us, that isn’t just a hiking trip. It’s how life feels right now.

Maybe you are staring at a career change that feels more like a freefall. Maybe you are navigating a health diagnosis that didn’t come with a roadmap. Or maybe you are a late-shift worker sitting in a quiet breakroom at 3:00 AM, wondering if the path you are on is actually leading anywhere.

Today, for Day 36 of our Boundless Daily journey, we are talking about faith in the unknown. We are talking about the courage it takes to step out when the path isn't clear.

The Beauty of the Fog

We often pray for "clarity." We want God to give us a high-definition, 4K view of the next five years. We want the blueprints, the timeline, and the guaranteed outcome. But if we saw everything ahead of us, we wouldn’t need faith. We would just need a checklist.

Faith, by its very definition, requires a lack of sight. The writer of Hebrews tells us that faith is the "evidence of things not seen." It is the confidence that even when we can’t see the hand of God, we can trust His heart.

Think about that foggy mountain path. The fog doesn't mean the mountain has disappeared. The trail is still there. The destination hasn't moved. Your lack of visibility doesn't change the reality of the ground beneath your feet. In the same way, the "unknowns" in your life do not intimidate God. He isn't surprised by the mist. He is the one who created the atmosphere.

The Lamp and the Path

One of the most famous verses regarding guidance is Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

In the ancient world, a lamp wasn't a powerful LED floodlight that illuminated a mile of road. It was a small clay vessel with a tiny wick. It provided just enough light for the very next step. It didn't show you the bend in the road three miles away; it showed you where to put your foot so you didn't trip over a rock right now.

This is how God often leads us. He gives us enough "Inspired Truth" for today. When we try to outrun the light, we get anxious. We start worrying about "What if?" and "How will I?" instead of focusing on "What is God saying right now?"

If you find yourself overwhelmed by the big picture, try shrinking your world back down to that single step. What is the one thing God is asking you to do today? Is it to forgive? Is it to rest? Is it to reach out for help?

Stepping Out Like Peter

We can’t talk about the unknown without talking about Peter. Imagine being in that boat in the middle of a storm. The waves are high, the wind is howling, and suddenly, you see a figure walking on the water.

When Jesus calls Peter to come to Him, He doesn't calm the storm first. He doesn't flatten the waves or turn on the sun. He calls Peter out into the middle of the chaos.

Peter had to make a choice: trust the safety of the boat he knew, or trust the Savior he loved.

Stepping out into the unknown is rarely a comfortable experience. It usually involves a bit of trembling. But here is the secret: the safest place to be isn't in a "safe" boat; it’s wherever Jesus is. If Jesus is in the fog, then the fog is the safest place for you to be.

The Holy Spirit: Our Internal Compass

At Boundless Online Church, we believe deeply in the power of the Holy Spirit. As an Assemblies of God ministry, we hold fast to the truth that God didn't just give us a book of rules and leave us to figure it out. He gave us a Helper.

Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would "guide us into all truth." Think of the Spirit as your internal compass. When visibility is zero, a compass is the only thing that matters. You might not see the landmarks, but you can see the needle.

When you spend time in prayer, you are calibrating your compass. You are getting your bearings. Even if your external circumstances haven't changed, that inner witness, that "still, small voice", can give you the courage to keep moving forward.

For Our Global Family

We know that many of you reading this are in places where "the unknown" feels especially heavy.

  • To our shift workers: You work while the world sleeps. Your "unknown" might be how you’ll balance family life with a schedule that keeps you isolated.

  • To our caregivers: You are looking after loved ones in hospice or dealing with long-term disabilities. Your "unknown" is how much strength you have left for tomorrow.

  • To those in unsafe areas: Your "unknown" is a matter of daily physical safety.

Please know that you are not walking alone. Boundless Online Church exists to be a community for those who don't fit into the traditional Sunday morning box. We are a global family, and we lean on each other. You can find more about our community here: Church Life & Community.

Practical Steps for When You’re Lost in the Mist

How do we actually live this out? How do we have "courageous, simple" faith?

  1. Acknowledge the Fear: Don't pretend you aren't scared. God can handle your honesty. Tell Him, "Lord, I can't see the path, and it’s making me anxious."

  2. Look for the "Next Right Step": Stop trying to solve next month’s problems. What is the one thing you need to do in the next hour to stay faithful?

  3. Stay in the Word: If you feel like you’re losing your way, go back to the map. The Bible is full of stories of people who had to walk through the unknown (Abraham, Moses, Mary). Their stories are there to remind us that God has a perfect track record.

  4. Connect with Others: Isolation makes the fog feel thicker. Reach out to a friend, join an online group, or simply send a text for prayer.

A Simple Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father,Right now, the path ahead looks blurry. I have questions that don't have answers yet, and I have worries that are trying to take up residence in my heart. I choose to trust You anyway. I believe that You are already in my "tomorrow." Help me to take the next step with courage. Be the lamp to my feet. Thank You for never leaving me or forsaking me. Amen.

Moving Forward

As we continue through this Boundless Daily series, remember that growth usually happens in the middle of the unknown. The "unknown" is the soil where faith grows best. It’s where we learn that God is enough, even when everything else is stripped away.

We invite you to explore our resources, from our Digital Video & Photo Training for those looking to serve in tech, to our collection of books that dive deeper into these truths.

If you are feeling stuck today, or if the fog feels too heavy to handle on your own, please reach out. We are here to stand with you in faith.
