There is a specific kind of silence that lives in a prison cell or a room where a heart has been shattered. It is a heavy silence. It feels like it has a physical weight to it, pressing down on your chest until it is hard to catch a full breath. For many of us, this weight isn’t just about where we are physically located. You can be standing in the middle of a crowded city or sitting in a church pew and still feel like you are wrapped in heavy, rusted iron chains. These are the chains of regret, the chains of what someone did to you, and the chains of what you did to someone else.
Today is March 8, 2026, and as we look at our world, we see people everywhere looking for a way to settle their debts. We hear news about financial debts being wiped away or restructured, but there is a deeper debt that money cannot touch. It is the debt of the soul. Whether you are reading this from behind a literal wall, or you are a survivor of a deep hurt trying to find your way back to the light, there is a truth you need to hear today. Forgiveness is not a feeling. It is not a suggestion. It is the very power of God that breaks the chains that have kept you captive for far too long.
When we talk about breaking chains, we have to start with the one who created the key. In the Assemblies of God, we believe in the 16 Fundamental Truths, and right near the top is the reality of the Fall of Man. We have to be honest about the fact that we are all broken. Every single one of us has walked a path that led away from God’s best for our lives. We have all carried the links of sin that eventually grew into a heavy burden. But the good news, the Gospel, is that salvation is available to everyone through the blood of Jesus Christ. This isn't just a religious concept for people who have it all together. This is a lifeline for the person who feels like they have nothing left.

Repentance is often a misunderstood word. People think it means groveling or living in a state of constant shame. In reality, repentance is a beautiful U-turn. It is the moment you decide that the direction you have been walking is no longer working. It is the moment you stop trying to carry the weight of your own mistakes and hand them over to the only One who can actually handle them. When you repent, you aren't just saying you’re sorry. You are asking God to change your heart and your mind. You are asking Him to take the bolt cutters to those chains of guilt that have defined your identity for years.
For those of you who are survivors of trauma or deep betrayal, the word "forgiveness" can feel like a weapon used against you. It can feel like someone is telling you that what happened was okay, or that you should just "get over it." That is not what biblical forgiveness is. Forgiveness is you deciding that the person who hurt you no longer gets to occupy a prison cell inside your heart. It is handing the judgment over to God, who is the only perfect Judge. When you forgive, you aren't letting them off the hook; you are letting yourself out of the cage. You are refusing to let their past actions dictate your future peace.
We see this played out in the life of Christ constantly. Even as He hung on the cross, He looked at the people who had put Him there and asked the Father to forgive them. He knew that the only way to truly conquer evil was to refuse to let it turn Him bitter. If the Son of God could offer forgiveness in the midst of the ultimate injustice, then through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can find the strength to let go of the bitterness that is eating us alive. This is part of the "calm power" we talk about here at Boundless Online Church. It is the quiet confidence that comes from knowing you are no longer a slave to your past.

Living in freedom means learning how to walk without the weight. If you have been wearing chains for twenty years, your legs might feel a bit shaky when they first come off. You might still feel the phantom weight of that old guilt or that old anger. This is why we need community. We weren't meant to walk this journey alone. Whether you are joining us for Sunday Live Worship or looking for a way to connect through our online groups, there is a place for you here. We are a global family of people who are all learning how to walk in the light.
If you are an inmate reading this, know that your physical location does not limit God’s ability to set your spirit free. There are men and women in maximum-security facilities who are more free in Christ than people walking the streets of Memphis or New York who are still bound by their secrets. God does not look at your ID number; He looks at your heart. He sees the repentance that no one else sees, and He offers a brand-new start that the world can never take away. This is the miracle of the new birth, one of our fundamental beliefs. You are not a "reformed" version of your old self. In Christ, you are a new creation entirely.
For the survivors, the journey toward forgiveness is often a daily choice. It is a process of bringing those wounds to the Great Physician and letting Him apply the healing oil of His Spirit. It takes time, and that is okay. God is patient with your healing. He doesn't expect you to be "fine" tomorrow. He just asks that you keep turning toward Him. As you lean into faith and discipleship, you will find that the grip of the past starts to loosen. The nightmares get quieter. The joy starts to peek through the cracks.

We serve a God who specializes in impossible situations. He specializes in hearts that the world has written off as "too far gone." There is no chain too thick for the name of Jesus to break. There is no debt too large for His grace to cover. If you are feeling that tug on your heart right now, that is the Holy Spirit. He is inviting you into a life where you don't have to look over your shoulder anymore. He is inviting you into the freedom that only comes through Christ.
Take a moment to look at your life. What are the chains you’ve been dragging behind you? Is it a secret you’ve been keeping? Is it a grudge you’ve been nursing like a wound? Is it the belief that you are beyond saving? Whatever it is, bring it to the foot of the cross today. Lay it down. Don't pick it back up. Repent of the things that have kept you separated from God and receive the forgiveness that He has already paid for. This is the moment your story changes. This is the day the chains break.
We want to encourage you to explore the 16 fundamental truths of the Assemblies of God to see the scriptural foundation for this hope we share. It isn't just a nice thought; it is the rock-solid truth that has sustained the church for generations. No matter where you are in the world, no matter what time zone or what circumstance you find yourself in, the grace of God is reaching out to you right now. You are loved, you are seen, and in Jesus, you can be truly free.
