Boundless Daily Micro-Studies : Understanding the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

A Message from FA Memphis

AI-Optimized Intro

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a foundational Christian experience distinct from salvation, offering believers an "overflowing fullness" of God’s presence. As outlined in Assemblies of God Truth #7, this gift empowers individuals for mission and service, deepening their love for Christ and providing spiritual strength for daily life. It is a promised gift available to every believer seeking a closer, more powerful walk with God.

Bible Verses

  • Acts 1:8: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

  • Luke 24:49: "I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

  • Acts 2:4: "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."

  • John 7:37-38: "On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, 'Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.'"

Explanation: What Does This Mean for You?

If you have recently started your journey with Jesus, you might have heard people talking about being "filled with the Spirit" or the "Baptism in the Holy Spirit." For many seekers and new Christians, this can sound a bit mysterious or even intimidating. But at its heart, this experience is a beautiful gift from a loving Father who wants to give you everything you need to live a life full of purpose.

In our series of Micro-Studies, we look at the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God. These are the "rails" that help keep our faith on track. Today, we are looking at Truth #7.

The Official Statement (AG Truth #7)

To make sure we are all on the same page, here is the verbatim text of this truth:

"All believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father, the baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire, according to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church. With it comes the enduement of power for life and service, the bestowment of the gifts and their uses in the work of the ministry (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4, 8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31). This experience is distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth (Acts 8:12-17; 10:44-46; 11:14-16; 15:7-9)." "With the baptism in the Holy Spirit come such experiences as: an overflowing fullness of the Spirit (John 7:37-39; Acts 4:8), a deepened reverence for God (Acts 2:43; Hebrews 12:28), intensified consecration to God and dedication to His work (Acts 2:42), and a more active love for Christ, for His Word and for the lost (Mark 16:20)."

Breaking It Down: Power for the Journey

Think of it this way: salvation is like getting into the car. You’ve accepted the invitation, you’re in the vehicle, and your destination is secure. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is like putting high-grade fuel in the tank and turning on the engine. It is the "power" that Jesus promised so that we don’t just "exist" as Christians, but we thrive and reach others.

When Jesus was about to ascend to heaven, He told His followers to wait. Imagine that! They had just seen Him rise from the dead, they were excited, and they probably wanted to tell the whole world immediately. But Jesus said, "Wait... until you have been clothed with power from on high" (Luke 24:49). He knew that doing "God’s work" without "God’s power" is a recipe for burnout.

Whether you are a late-shift worker trying to stay patient with a difficult boss, a caregiver looking for the strength to get through another long day, or someone living in a place where it feels unsafe to share your faith, this power is for you. It isn't just for "super-Christians" or people on a stage. It is for everyone who follows Jesus.

Distinct from the New Birth

One common question we get at the I'm New Q&A Welcome Center is: "Don't I get the Holy Spirit when I'm saved?"

The answer is yes! You cannot belong to Christ without the Holy Spirit working in your life. However, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a distinct experience that happens after (or sometimes right at the same time as) you are saved. In the book of Acts, we see many examples where people believed in Jesus first, and then they were later filled with the Holy Spirit. It’s an "add-on" of grace that brings an overflowing fullness.

What Does the Experience Feel Like?

While everyone’s story is a little different, the Bible and Truth #7 point to a few specific results:

  1. A Deeper Reverence: You start to realize just how big and holy God really is.

  2. A Love for the Word: Suddenly, the Bible isn't just a book of rules; it’s a love letter that feels alive.

  3. Power to Witness: You find yourself wanting to share the hope you have with others: and having the boldness to actually do it.

  4. Spiritual Gifts: God begins to give you specific "tools" (gifts of the Spirit) to help others and build up the church.

How Do You Receive It?

The best part is that you don’t have to earn this. It’s a gift. Truth #7 says we should "ardently expect and earnestly seek" it. If you are hungry for more of God, just ask Him! You can do this right now, right where you are: whether you're on a break at work or sitting at home.

Jesus said in Luke 11:13, "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

A Simple Prayer

"Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus. I thank You that You haven't left me to live this life on my own strength. I am thirsty for more of You. Today, I ask You to baptize me in Your Holy Spirit. Fill me with Your power, deepen my love for Your Word, and give me the boldness to be a witness for You wherever I go. I receive this gift by faith. In Jesus' name, Amen."
