Boundless Daily: Resisting the Pull

We’ve all felt it.
That subtle, magnetic tug toward something we know isn’t good for us.
Maybe it’s a quick flare of temper.
Maybe it’s a habit you thought you’d left behind years ago.
Or maybe it’s just the quiet drift into apathy, where God feels far away and the world feels very, very loud.
Welcome to the pull.
In this Boundless Daily Micro-Study, we’re looking at what it means to face temptation, not as people who are perfect, but as people who are being made new.
The Reality of the Current
Life isn’t a stagnant pond. It’s more like a river.
There is a constant current moving around us. In our culture, that current usually flows away from the heart of God.
If you stop paddling, you don’t stay in one place. You drift.
Temptation isn’t just about the "big" things we see in movies. It’s the daily pressure to prioritize ourselves over others, to seek comfort over character, and to trust our feelings over God’s truth.
The Bible tells us in James 1:14 that "each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed."
It’s an internal pull meeting an external pressure.
But here is the good news: feeling the pull isn't the same thing as giving in to it.
Even Jesus felt the pull.
He was tempted in every way that we are, yet He remained without sin. Because He’s been there, He doesn't look at us with judgment when we struggle. He looks at us with understanding.

A Firm Foundation
At Boundless Online Church, we believe in the 16 Fundamental Truths of the Assemblies of God.
One of those core truths is Sanctification.
That’s a big "churchy" word, but it has a very simple, beautiful meaning: it’s the process of being set apart for God.
It’s not something that happens all at once the moment you decide to follow Jesus. It’s a progressive work of grace.
Every time you "resist the pull," you are participating in sanctification.
You are letting the Holy Spirit reshape your desires.
One of the most powerful tools we have in this process is Biblical Authority. We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God. It’s our rule for living.
When the pull gets strong, we don't have to rely on our own willpower. We rely on what God has already said.
If you’re looking to dive deeper into the Word with others, you might want to check out our Bible Study Club. It’s a great place to find fellow travelers who are also navigating the current.
The Escape Hatch
There is a promise in 1 Corinthians 10:13 that every believer should keep in their back pocket.
It says, "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."
Read that again.
God provides a way out.
Sometimes that "way out" is a literal exit, walking out of a room or closing a laptop tab.
Sometimes the "way out" is a phone call to a friend.
And sometimes, the "way out" is a shift in perspective that reminds you who you are in Christ.
You are not a victim of your impulses.
Through the power of the Holy Spirit, you have been given the gift of self-control.

Not by Might, Nor by Power
If you try to resist temptation purely through "gritting your teeth," you’re going to get tired.
Willpower is a finite resource. It runs out, especially when we’re tired, lonely, or stressed.
This is where another one of our Fundamental Truths comes in: The Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
We believe that God gives us an endowment of power for life and service.
This isn’t just for "big" ministry moments. It’s for the 2:00 AM moments when you’re scrolling on your phone and feel the pull of old habits.
It’s for the stressful workday when you want to snap at a coworker.
The Holy Spirit is our Comforter and our Helper.
When you feel the pull, try a simple "breath prayer."
Holy Spirit, help me.
Jesus, give me Your strength.
It’s an acknowledgment that you can’t do this on your own, and you weren't meant to.
The Power of Connection
We help people meet Jesus and grow in faith online.
One of the ways we grow is by realizing we aren't alone in the struggle.
Temptation loves isolation. It wants you to think you’re the only one dealing with "that" issue. It wants you to feel ashamed, so you stay hidden.
But grace thrives in the light.
When we share our struggles with a trusted community, the power of temptation begins to wither.
Whether you are a shift worker, a caregiver at home, or someone living in a place where a physical church isn't an option, you have a seat at our table.
Our digital groups are designed for this exact purpose. For the men in our community, we have a specific Bible Study for Men where we talk about the real-life pulls we face.

Practical Steps for the Daily Grind
So, how do we practically resist the pull this week?
Here are a few simple "Boundless Daily" tips:
1. Identify the Triggers Most temptation follows a pattern. Are you more susceptible when you're hungry? Bored? Lonely? Tired? Recognizing the pattern is half the battle.
2. Guard Your Inputs What are you watching? Who are you listening to? If the "pull" is coming from your social media feed, it might be time to hit the unfollow button.
3. Replace, Don't Just Remove Don't just try to stop a bad habit. Replace it with a good one. If you’re trying to stop complaining, start a gratitude journal. If you’re trying to stop scrolling, start a 5-minute Bible reading plan.
4. Pray Immediately Don't wait until you've already stumbled to talk to God. Pray the moment you feel the tug.
5. Stay Connected Make use of the resources on our website. Listen to a podcast, join a discussion, or simply read through the articles in our sitemap to keep your mind focused on things above.
A Life of Purpose
Resisting the pull isn't just about saying "no" to the bad stuff.
It’s about saying "yes" to the life God has for you.
Every time you choose God's way over the world's way, you are growing in faith. You are becoming the person He created you to be.
You are moving closer to the heart of the Father.
The world will always have a pull. But the love of Christ has a greater weight.
Lean into Him today.
He is faithful to lead you through the current and into the quiet waters of His peace.
